Blood Painted Roses *Part 2*

*Adam’s POV*

“Hayley Stevens?” Silence. “Hayley Stevens?” Mrs. Patterson said this time taking her eyes off the screen.

“I guess she’s ab-” Mrs. Patterson was cut short.

“Here.” A girl with short bright red hair and heavy black eyeliner, said walking through the door. Her hair covered the left side of her face, so I couldn’t get a good view of her face. But she must have been Hayley.

“Oh, look what the cat coughed up.” A girl’s voice from the back echoed. Must’ve been one of Brittany’s friends.

Hayley’s eyes followed the voice, but her mouth didn’t open. Her eyes met the linoleum as she took a seat in the front row.

Whispering conversations floated about in the room.

“Class settle down!” Mrs. Patterson stormed. The class got quiet. “Let me start by introducing myself and explaining why your schedules have been changed.”

She twisted the cap off a dry-erase marker and printed her name neatly in cursive on the whiteboard.

“My name is Mrs. Patterson and this is AP English. You are all in here because you have excelled in your regular English classes, and deserve more of a challenge. You guys are obviously all bright and intelligent seniors and I expect top work from all of you. I know that you must all be disappointed about the change, but it shouldn’t be that bad. Think of it as more of a step forward.”

She went on about the rules and policies for what seemed like an hour, but was only 20 minutes.

“Now enough of my rules. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty: your first assignment.” Mrs. Patterson said clapping her hands together.

The “what the hell” look poured over everyone’s faces.

“It shouldn’t be too bad- just a little warm up,” she reassured us. “A four page, MLA format typed only, don’t forget an information board and oral presentation on an influential writer/poet of the 18th or 19th century.” Mrs. Patterson said all in one breath.

“What?! Heck to the ‘no’!” A voice from the back of the side of the room spoke.

“Or on the otherhand, I could double it to 8 pages without double space and 1″ margins. Take your pick.”

Not a soul spoke.

“That’s what I thought.” Mrs. Patterson said contently.

She walked back to her desk and grabbed a file folder that had a few papers coming out.

“This project is due 2 weeks from Friday. But you won’t be working alone. I have assigned two persons per group. Each one of you will be working with a partner. And the groups are:

Group 1: Jason/Gina

Group 2: Renaldo/Brittany

Group 3: George/Jenna

Group 4: Chris/A.J.

I started getting nervous. What group am I in, I thought anxiously.

After various names were called, only one group was left.

“Group 15 is….Drum roll, please?”

“Adam and Hayley.”

“What?! Why?!” I said absentmindedly. I didn’t mean to say it aloud, but it slipped.

Hayley didn’t turn her head or body, she just sat there writing or drawing, or whatever she does in that notebook of hers.

“Enough already. Plan, Prepare, and Please me in the end,” Mrs. Patterson said in a business- like manner. “Go.”

Bodies shuffled around in order to locate partners. All but Hayley and I that is.

*Hayley’s POV*

“Group 15… Adam and Hayley.” The same sentence that came forth from her mouth repeated and played nonstop in my head.

Adam won the ‘Cute and Cool’ award in the 1st grade. He’s also won homecoming king every year since freshman year. Now he’s my partner? “Varsity Football Quarterback Teams Up With Emo Loner,” I see it posted in the school newspaper already. Why me?

Adam looked around to see if anyone was watching, then he pulled out a chair, and spoke to me from the side of my desk.

“Ok, make sure you research and type the report, buy poster board. Make it look great. I’m sure you’ll do a great job.” Adam said while I was still writing in my notebook. He ended his statement with a ridiculous grin.

“Excuse me?” I said lifting my head.

“You heard. I have footbal practice after school and personal business to take care of.” He retorded.

What an ass! Like I don’t have things to do. I’ve got a job and another fulltime job of being a maid around the house.

Bell rings.

*Adam’s POV*

“Don’t we all.” Hayley picked up her notebook and left. Her green eyes appeared glassy.
