Rodney Mullen's Video in Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater.
Soundtrack: A.F.I. - The Boy Who Destroyed The World
Thanks to Buzznet user Woodenshoes for reminding me how much I love Rodney Mullen.
I first started skateboarding at around age 11. I had a shitty deck from Wal Mart or something and really terrible trucks, but I would practice ollies and kickflips for hours on end outside in my backyard. I remember I learned how to ollie on grass first and when I tried it on the cement patio, the board slipped out from underneath me.
My first experience with Rodney Mullen was from one of the 411 Video Magazines. This was...atleast 10 years ago. Maybe more, maybe less, but I was a youngin' when I first saw it. I was mesmerized that people could even do shit like that with a skateboard. It shattered my entire view of skateboarding (in a good way) in the sense that all my friends, who I had previously thought were kings of the game, suddenly became within reach of my ability: they simply weren't as good as Rodney Mullen.
In junior high, I'd lie to my parents about having some school function or track meet or something of the sort. I'd get dropped off in full uniform (skateboard in hand) in front of the school. 5 minutes later, my friend Nate's older brother would drive up and I'd pile in the back and we'd head to Venice Beach or Huntington Beach or Brea or wherever the fuck Mullen would be at whatever skate demo he'd be at. We'd all show up and fuck around on ramps and rails and generally be ok, and then Mullen would slay us all.
I don't actively skate much anymore (and I do miss it dearly) but it's always going to be a part of me. And man, was I ever stoked to have Mullen skate to one of my favorite A.F.I. songs of all time.
