Pete Wentz Voices Opinion on Promoters Ordinance

Chicago has a music scene that is hard to rival — and that's why discussion about a promoters' ordinance sent some community members into FREAKOUT mode.

The purpose of the proposed law is supposedly to keep "problem venues" and "underground promoters" in check, but the comments in the Chicago Sun-Times blog suggest otherwise. Chicago Mayor Richard Daly tabled the ordinance for the time being, but not fast enough to slip by the ever-watchful eyes of Chicago boy Pete Wentz.

The always-vocal Fall Out Boy called in to the paper to express his thoughts on the issue, acknowledging that without ever playing those little shows city council wants to regulate, there would probably be no FOB as we now know them.

"I don't even really understand all the intricate details of this ordinance or what needs to happen," he said, "but I do understand that there are people who practice illegitimate business or dangerous business, and there has to be a way to regulate those people. But at the same time, you can't penalize people who are creating a great counterculture and a great art culture and leave it so that they have nowhere else to go. ... Kids are kids, and music is music — especially with punk rock or whatever—and they're going to find a way to meet up with each other regardless of anything. That's just gonna happen, because I went to shows in basements for five years of my life, and I know there were no permits on the basements!"

Um, Pete for Prez? Good lookin' out, Wentz. Don't let the man ruin the scene!

Thank you, Pete, for watching over Chicago's music scene! I think, if Pete hadn't said something about this, the stupid ordinance would have been passed and a lot of people would be missing out on some amazing music.

im so glad that at least someone isn't staying quiet about the situation and actually raising their voice for something they feel so strongly about. I agree completely with pete, though their are somer bad apples, doesn't mean u have to punish everyone else who loves the chicago music scene.

It's true. He saved it! I think everyone has to find something to appreciate about him. Especially stuff like this.

Hah, he should totally run for prez. But anyways, when I first read this, I was pretty upset. I mean, really, how horrible would it be if bands from Chicago were effected by this ordinance years ago? Some of them, of course including Fall Out Boy wouldn't even exist as Pete said in his blog. It's insane after all these years that someone is trying to mess all of this up. Just leave Chicago be.

Yesss. Save the Chicago music scene. Best concerts of my liife. And as for Pete, good for him for speaking out against this....but I disagree. Pete wouldn't have stopped the ordinance, there were a ton of people against it as it was. He's just very vocal about it, which is awesome. But, c'mon.
