Neil Diamond Breaks 50-Year #1 Drought Thanks to 'Idol'; Madonna Falls 'Hard'

It's hard to believe that beloved singer/songwriter Neil Diamond has been cranking out tunes since 1958 yet hasn't had a single album debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 — until now.

Thanks to his recent appearance on a little television show called "American Idol," Diamond's Home Before Dark cleared house with 146,000 copies sold. Meanwhile, no stranger to the top of the charts, country singer Toby Keith proved once again that country still sells — his double-disc collection 35 Biggest Hits came in at #2 with 103,000 copies sold.

Toby Keith better watch his back, though. Only 60,001 copies away from surpassing Keith is country singer Dierks Bentley, who has his own greatest-hits album, Greatest Hits: Every Mile a Memory, hitting the charts at #9 with 43,000.

As for Madonna ... what went wrong? Her 11th studio album, Hard Candy, dropped to #3 from its No. 1 spot last week. Only 94,000 copies were sold last week (with a crisp 280,000 units moved the week prior). Perhaps her upcoming world tour will save her sales!

Mariah Carey clocked in a #4 for her own 11th studio album, E=MC2 (87,000 copies sold), and British singer Leona Lewis continues to ride Carey's coattail, trailing behind her once again at #5 for her album Spirit, which sold 76,000 copies.

But enough about the ladies. Hottie Gavin DeGraw has his highest Billboard 200 debut ever, landing the #7 spot for his self-titled album in its first week with 66,000 units moved. Previously, DeGraw had reached only reached the #56 spot with 2004's Chariot — Stripped. That's a difference of 49 spots. Buy this man a beer!

Someone who probably isn't much of beer drinker is curly-haired Josh Groban, who knows how to work a crowd, as showcased in his CD/DVD Awake Live. It debuted at #8 with 58,000 copies purchased.

Rounding up the list at #10 this week is Latin legend Luis Miguel, whose new album, Complices, rocked 32,000 eardrums.

Easy come ... easy go. Last week's chart-toppers Lyfe Jennings, Def Leppard, The Roots, Portishead, Mudcrutch, Now That's What I Call Music! 27 and Tim McGraw have all vanished from their top 10 positions. Can anything give their records new life?
