Get To Know: BreesaysEvery day Buzznet.com benefits immensely from the enormous contributions made by our lovable and super-fun site moderator Breesays. We all know her as the peppy, outgoing and personable site administrator who gets the awesome interviews and keeps us up to date on pop culture and music news. But beyond that sassy persona is one deep chick. Now Bree sits down with us to discuss her work work, body image issues, her addictions, depression awareness, and her life outside of Buzznet.
Johnnynotsid: How separate is your offline life/personality from your online personality/life? Breesays: Oh, not very separate--I think I'm pretty much the same person online and offline. I'm much more articulate and outgoing in writing, but I have the same voice. I don't see much sense in creating a persona. I like to keep it real.
Johnnynotsid: Are people outside of work aware of your status online? Breesays: Haha, some friends are, kind of. I get teased about it a bit like if someone comes up to me at a show or something. I like having the platform and the attention (most of the time) but really, I'm not an internet celebrity. I'm just a writer and a bit of a fangirl who is very invested in my audience.
Johnnynotsid: What is it like working at Buzznet? Breesays: It's cool. I come into the office to be myself. I started when there were only 7 people here and as a company, we've gone through a lot of changes--grown (and shrank!) but I've got to have my hands in so many more things than if I went to (for example) work at a record label where my role was clearly defined from the beginning. Plus, going to a show is work. Reading books is work. Following All Time Low's tweets is work. Listening to music all day is work. It's a pretty sweet deal, know what I mean? It's hard to describe to people, though. I think primarily, I'm a writer, but there are a lot of other things that go into the job
Johnnynotsid: Who and what helps you get through the work day? Breesays: Music, definitely. I create playlists every month and for every mood. Definitely everyone I talk to on AIM (you, Ashly, etc) because I feel like our conversations help me come up with ideas and basically just energize me.
Johnnynotsid: Awwww. Now I feel all warm and fuzzy. Breesays: Also I often want to get through the day so I can go home and read. Or go for a hike. Something that has nothing to do with celebrities or bands. Haha.
Johnnynotsid: What are your biggest struggles day to day, in and outside of work? Breesays: I still have a lot of body image issues, and I know that with a younger audience and a sister who looks up to me, I have to walk a fine line between being honest and being responsible. So I watch what I say, I watch what I tweet. I know its fine to be vulnerable every once in awhile, but I dont want to condone certain attitudes or behaviors, because I know how I absorbed that when I was a teen. If that all makes sense.
Johnnynotsid: What do you think sparked some of these issues? Breesays: They basically started when I was 11 and my body started changing. I rebelled against it. My mom has always had issues with body image as well, and you can't grow up hearing and seeing that and not have it affect you. Plus, my dad is an artist, so beauty and aesthetics are important and praised. I was in baby pageants, so that probably didnt help. Its hard to escape the impression that people are judging you all the time when that is how you spent the first years of your life.
Johnnynotsid: Do you sometimes still feel judged on Buzznet?
Breesays: Oh definitely. Maybe moreso on other sites, like YouTube or inside LJ communities. It's why I have a huge problem with doing on-camera interviews. I stress out about it for weeks beforehand, just because some person behind a screen will make a comment about how I'm annoying or ugly or something else equally as tactless. It's my job to be on the internet, do you think I'm not going to see that. That changes how I write about celebrities, as well, though. Just because you assume the person won't see your commentary doesn't give you the right to be an asshole
Johnnynotsid: Agreed. You’ve got to do a lot of interviews, are you nervous a lot, or has it gotten easier? Breesays: Oh I still get just as nervous. Because a lot of the interview depends on how receptive, articulate and/or entertaining the other person is. You can do your research and come up with great questions, but if the wheels arent turning in their head... I really like researching and writing the questions, though. I'd just like to be behind the scenes! The email interview I just did with Greta Salpeter was maybe my most favorite one I've ever done.
Johnnynotsid: Do you have any weird or gross habits? Breesays: I'm kind of compulsive about organization... and matching. Even my pajamas have to match. if im not organized on the outside, I cant be organized on the inside. Gross? I like to eat Midnight Moo chocolate syrup straight from the bottle sometimes. Johnnynotsid: You’re usually the person who keeps us up to date on celeb gossip, tv stuff, etc. What are your favorite topics to follow and post on? Breesays: I sort of have my obsessions, but they vary. Fall Out Boy, being one, obviously. Regina Spektor, No Doubt, Paramore. I don't really like to perpetuate gossip, but I like bringing up topics that really get discussion rolling. Thats the goal.
Johnnynotsid: What are your guilty pleasures and addictions? Breesays: Well it's no secret that I listen to Britney Spears quite often. I don't know that I feel that guilty about it, though. Haha. I'm addicted to buying books, notebooks and watching Law & Order on Netflix instant. Johnnynotsid: What crazy things have happened behind the scenes at Buzznet? Breesays: Oh gosh I don't want to name names. Some user situations that involved a majority of us on speakerphone with WTF faces. That's all I will say.
Johnnynotsid: What is it like living in LA? Breesays: You know, I've actually come to like it a lot. There are places I like more (Santa Barbara) but I appreciate that it offers so much variety--food-wise, entertainment-wise and everyyy band comes through here. And there was 8 months during which I didn't have a car and I totally managed, despite a few creep-tastic subway encounters. Oh, and traffic and parking always blow. But you get used to that.
Johnnynotsid: How would you characterize yourself? Bubbly? Sassy? Serious? Nerdy? Breesays: "Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth" - I don't know who said that, but that's what I think. Hahah. I guess I would say sassy and kind of cerebral. Which is just a fancy way of saying nerdy, I suppose.
Johnnynotsid: Do you have any celeb girl-crushes or Buzznet crushes? Breesays: Celeb girl crushes... Gwen Stefani and Regina Spektor I had a Buzznet crush on Brianfax before Jenrrray stole his heart. Oh and a Buzznet girl crush on divaxatlanta
Johnnynotsid: You’re usually pretty upbeat, but has there ever been a time when you’ve seen something on Buzznet that makes you want to beat someone over the head with a fish? Breesays: Hahaha. You know, generally, I try to let people have their say because I know opinions and perspectives aren't concrete... If I have a strong opinion on something, I usually commission someone to parody it. Usually Evey, Ashly or IkkyG. Now everyone knows.
Johnnynotsid: What issues or pursuits do you feel really passionate about? Breesays: Depression awareness. I know TWLOHA is a christian-based organization, and I don't necessarily align myself with those beliefs, but at least SOMEONE is actively providing resources. I had a scary experience at my first job, where I was sort of mentoring this suicidal teen and it just became too much for me, as a 20 year old, to handle. I wanted to pass him on to some professional resources, so I researched them. Called hotlines, visited websites, etc. The result was moderately depressing itself. I think the stigma of "talking to someone" whether it be a counselor or therapist or even just someone you trust, should be removed. Talk it out. No one is going to give you any awards for staying miserable. Johnnynotsid: Where do you see yourself in five years? Breesays: Oh man, that's hard to picture. I don't even enjoy buying tickets for shows that are 3 months away, haha. I have little goals (like publishing a short story or book), and qualities I'd like to improve in myself, but I don't have a concrete titles I'm aiming for. Oh, I totally want a cat, though. Maybe a car with seat warmers and some better knowledge of yoga poses. Haha.
Johnnynotsid: What music did you listen to growing up? Breesays: A lot of pop. My mom was a superfan of Madonna and lived and breathed MTV. I think my first dream job was actually a VJ. I was soooo into Ska for awhile, too. No Doubt, Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris.
Johnnynotsid: What’s your current musical fix? Breesays: Regina Spektor, absolutely. Her new album Far comes out on June 23rd and I just sit on her MySpace and replay the 3 videos she has (for "Laughing With" "Eet" and "Dance Anthem of the 80's"). She is magical.
Johnnynotsid: Who is your favorite author? Breesays: I have to pick one? In an exercise of restraint, I'll say Aimee Bender & Jonathan Safran Foer & Nick Hornby
