Buzznet Community Review: "The Ballad of Jonathan Crane" by Mikey Way

At long last, the DC Universe Halloween Special, featuring an 8 page story by My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way, has hit news shelves.

Mikey's story, "The Ballad of Jonathan Crane," is a short story featuring Batman and the Scarecrow displaced into the town of Sleepy Hollow.  Now, I'm a sucker for any kind of story that sets comic characters in historical settings (Marvel 1602, written by Neil Gaiman, is one of those comics I urge even non-comic fans to read), and had really high hopes for this.

In only 8-pages, Mikey managed to satisfy what I was looking for.  Actually, in a single page he managed to completely surprise me with the inclusion of another Batman universe character.  I refuse to spoil it for you, but let's just say there's a great scene at a masked ball that you should keep your eyes open for!

The rest of the issue is worth it as well, with Halloween themed stories featuring Superman, The Green Lantern/Kyle Rayner, Felix Faust and even Vixen.  The whole thing is "hosted" by the ghosts of Elongated Man Ralph Dibny and his wife Sue.

All in all?  A great start for Mikey's comic career and an fantastic issue all around!

Have you read the issue?  What are your thoughts?

Yes, I've forced several people to read 1602 - it's so awesome! I haven't been to the comic book store in so long D: I'm hoping I'll be able to go next week after I get paid, because I can't stand it any longer!

You know my city doesn't even have a comic book store? I'll have to try to find this when I hit civilization this weekend

I'm working on getting Gwen Artax into comics...I'm going to inflict 1602, Sandman and Mouse Guard on her, as well as The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite. >:)

Ahhh, can never get enough Neil Gaiman! I've found that Blankets is a pretty good entry point for non-comics people, and I've had a lot of people ask me about Watchmen, since the movie is coming. And then I say, "zOMG, go 2 Borders rite nao n by ittttttt!!1!!1"

I have a creepy, old comic book in my store where the lady YELLED at me for touching the X-Men comics. So I generally try to avoid it and buy my comic books at Borders, but I want to try to get it. And brave the scary comic books lady.
