Travis McCoy Arrest Confirmed; Community Round-up

It's been confirmed by Rolling Stone that Gym Class Heroes frontman, Travis McCoy, was indeed arrested following yesterday's assault on a heckler who used a racist slur against him. The news of the Warped Tour incident hit our community hard; how did Buzznet react?

Rolling Stone is reporting that after McCoy finished the set, he was arrested onstage. He was released early this morning on a $500 bond, charged with one count of third-degree assault. There still hasn't been any statements released from the Gym Class Heroes camp. We'll keep you updated.

Additionally, video of the actual incident has found it's way on YouTube, but we have to warn you that the footage sounds as if the Cloverfield monster attacked the Warped Tour:

Our own community was just as reactive as McCoy; in just the few comments, we had to deal with our own racist and the incident caused people to examine how they felt about such language:

Indeed it was.

KasperObscene makes an excellent point about the rudeness of hecklers in general:

Even further, JurassicJack said that the word simply shouldn't be used at all and subscribed a fitting punishment:

I'd like to open the conversation to everyone, even those Buzznet members who don't even know who this band is. Do you feel Travis McCoy was justified in his actions? Do you also think that the word that the heckler used should still be acceptable to use? Was anyone "right" in the situation or is there a giant gray area?

We promise to keep you updated; please check out our Warped Tour Blog for ongoing coverage of the entire Warped Tour.

UPDATE: Gym Class Heroes' manager has made a statement regarding the incident, which can be found on the front page of FriendsOrEnemies.com

i'm glad travis got released.

i think the person who made that ignorant comment should have gotten banned from the concert :)

part of me thinks that, looking at it rationally, travis was a bit out of line with his reaction. but on the other hand, i honestly can't blame him. it's such a brutally rude thing to say, especially in such a public space, and in a situation where, for obvious reasons, it would have been impossible for travis to try to reason with the guy or have any kind of discussion about the implications of what he said.

and as for the word itself, it needs to just not be used at all, ever, in such a context. even if this guy is black or biracial himself, it's not the kind of word you should throw around. i recognise that as a white kid, it is not my place to police how people of colour are and aren't allowed to use that word, but it is my opinion that it is such a loaded word that it should not be used in this way at all. so just for that word alone, travis had every right to be as pissed off as he was.

I think Travis was justified in his actions especially since the comment was directed at him. Jurassicjack is right; No one should use that word what so ever, no matter what the circumstances.
It's unfortunate that really you can't stop people from saying it. You can put whatever law on it people will still say it. It's illegal to murder somone and rob a bank but people still do it. Something should be done though, definetly, at least to get some sort of justice.
It is kind of a gray area because even if they do use the word what can you actually do about it apart from batter them with a mic stand? But then the attacker gets into trouble for it.....

I think that that word shouldn't be allowed to be used by anyone, it is extremely insulting and that kid got what was coming to him. If he didn't like Travis or the Gym Class Heroes there wasn't any point in wasting his time to go and see them and ultimately get beat. Most people would say that two wrongs don't make a right and I'd usually agree with them, but in this case, what happened has raised awareness among buzznet users and everyone else who hears about this incident about the indecency of the use of derogatory words. So in my opinion, in this case, Travis McCoy was justified in his actions.

To be honest, if I was shot a derogatory word during my set, I would unleash hell.
I can't blame Travie.
Guy (heckler) needs to shut his big fat mouth.
katiedontcry: 07/02/2008 11:17 AM
It's not acceptable for anyone to use that word. Travie wasn't over-reacting, i totally support him. The ignorant guy had it coming and should have been removed
.

I'm glad he was released, but seriously, he had every right to be pissed off. I'm glad that he beat the crap out of that guy, he deserved it. There is no need whatsoever for these insults. Especially when he was onstage! If this heckler has those opinions, he could at least keep them to himself. He had no business going to the Gym Class Heroes set and starting crap like this. I probably would've done the same thing if I was in Travie's position. He shouldn't take any dumb, racial, bullshit from anyone. Needless to say, what that guy did was really inappropriate and just indecent. Go Travis!
icedmaple: 07/02/2008 11:22 AM
I don't blame Travie for reacting the way he did, but a witty reparte would probably have been both smarter and smoother, all things considered. One well-placed reference to his inevitably superior penis-size would have shot that moron down in a second ("six-five, two hundred plus and so sexy..") and probably hurt the jackass more than a mic to the face.
PanasonicYouth: 07/02/2008 11:29 AM
Yeah, I'm a fan of public humiliation over a beatdown any day.
pamelab: 07/02/2008 11:38 AM
yet again, another person craving attention...Kids will do anything to be noticed but calling other people names or just hating on people in general is not the right way to go about it. I don't think that fighting is the answer but that kid who got the beatdown by a mic deserved something because he is totally out of line.
