"500 Days Of Summer" Soundtrack Proves That Indie Films Have Better Music Then Blockbuster Hits

The Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt upcoming summer film called 500 Days of Summer has a pretty solid soundtrack which comes out July 7th. Are you surprised that this indie flick would have anything less then a great soundtrack? This film looks totally romantic and pefectly casted. I suggest going to see this film on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Watch the trailer and you wil see what I mean. Read on ...

My Top 12...

Bands and artists with high voices!  Whether it's because they're singing falsetta, have a naturally high singing voice, or can just hit notes so high that your ears can bleed, you've gotta admit, it's good to have a break from cookie monster growls once in a while.  And note that I'm not putting any generic pop-punk bands on here, because there are so many of those bands that have singers with high voices that it's really nothing special.  And yes, I had to choose 11, because the number 12 is underrated. (:

12. Michael Jackson.

Believe it or not, MJ was quite the stud back in the dizz-ay.  And you can't help but wonder how he hits some of the high notes in some of his songs.  Even if he is a creepy child mollestor, he can sing!  And don't even bother denying it, no matter how creepy he is...nobody doesn't love his music.  And if they claim not to, they have obviously never heard Beat It.

11. Anthrax

Or at least, some of their stuff...not the rap-metal stuff like Bring the Noise, where the vocals are anything but high.  But in what I think is their better stuff, like Antisocial and Madhouse, he sounds great and hits some hella high notes.

10. Wolfmother

The vocals in this band are pretty damn good, and even though some songs have higher vocals than others, it's clear that he has a great voice.

9. Coheed & Cambria

This band is incredible.  Not only can Claudio Sanchez hit ridiculous notes, but his hair has a mind of its own.  I KNOW IT.

8. Rush

LOVE.

7. The Who

Even though this band has great songs where Roger Daltrey's lower vocals sing - for instance, Love Reign O'er Me, which is definitely one of my favorite Who songs - Pete Townshend's higher voice is great, and he could sing any song he wanted and make it sound pretty much godly.

6. The Beatles

Okay, so some of their songs' vocals aren't high at all, but regardless of what song it is, they're so good that they had to be on the list.

5. Iron Maiden

Do I honestly need to explain?!  The notes that Bruce Dickinson can hit are freakin' insane!

4. Yes

You may think you've never heard this band, but I guarantee you've heard a song like Roundabout or Owner of a Lonely Heart at least once without realizing it.  From the instrumentals to the vocals, they're incredible, and Jon Anderson's high, falsetta vocals are so out of place that they sound incredible.

3. Queen

NO EXPLAINATION NEEDED.  THE END.

2. Led Zeppelin

So maybe Robert Plant's voice isn't anywhere near as high as Freddie Mercury's or Jon Anderson's, but it's still high, and it's still amazing, and I'm still obsessed with this band!

1. Guns N' Roses

These guys could go on either the lowest vocal list OR the highest vocal list.  Axl can hit ridiculous notes, whether it's at the tippy top or the very bottom of the scale.  Bottom line, he has the best range EVAR.  <3

The end. (:

My Chemical Romance Signs Up for Download

No, this headline does not mean that MCR's soaring harmonics will be available for massive Internet poaching.  Rather, My Chemical Romance has agreed to fill the June 8th headlining slot at the massively appealing Download Music Festival in Leicestershire, England.

Guitarist Ray Toro explains that the band generally avoids huge collective concert events, but could not resist the Download lineup.

With bands including Wolfmother, Linkin Park and 30 Seconds to Mars, who among us could resist a trip to the English countryside?

Wolfmother February 22, 2007 By: Christine Albrecht

PNE Forum Sold Out

Thanks to Kelli at House Of Blues, I finally got to see Wolfmother and without paying scalper’s fees.

Was my third time trying the charm? Most definitely!

As Jeff O’Neill from CFOX radio station informed us, this was the largest crowd Wolfmother had played to; the first stop on their North American Tour, and the largest crowd the 75 year old PNE Forum has experienced in over a decade. Wolfmother has visited Vancouver three times in the last year, having sold out each venue.

For anyone who knows my musical tastes, Wolfmother’s self titled cd was selected as my number one pick for 2006 (although actually released in October of 2005). After the opening act, The Icarus Line , finished their set, I was concerned about the acoustics in the Forum as I found most of Icarus’ set was sound like one song blended into another. However, their theatrical showmanship made up for the poor sound. The singer strutted, full scarf ensemble a la Steve Tyler, and did the hands on hips swagger channelling Mick Jagger. As well, there is nothing more humbling than having to be your own roadies at a big gig. I think Wolfmother chose well for their opening act as The Icarus Line definitely warmed up the crowd with their antics. (As well, the crowd seemed familiar with their songs Up Against the Wall, and Party the Baby Off.)

The energy in the room prior to Wolfmother taking the stage was palatable. The bass sound system was turned up to the point where I could feel it in my throat as if eating it. Then when the three unassuming men took the stage, the audience lost it. Body/crowd surfing ensued, and I was crushed to the front (which reminds me - the blue stage lighting/smoke has got to go as none of my pictures turned out!). Kudos to security who only got physical with one clearly out of control fellow - they put up with spilled drinks, tossed water bottles, thrown clothing and helped each of the crowd-surfing kids down at front and off into the crowd again.

The audience was an eclectic mix, with mostly younger fans attending as this was an all ages show. I even managed to glimpse some white unicorn getups and full afro wigs in honour of singer, 31 year old Andrew Stockdale. (I swear, I have never seen a hairier band than this - when the lead singer would smile, all you saw were white chiclets amidst wild hair.) Chris Ross was clearing favouring one leg and I was curious what injury he had experienced. (Later found out that While playing a gig in Copenhagen, Denmark, Feb. 17/07, he injured his foot.) He limped over to his keyboards and had a seat - playing both bass and keyboards (although he semi stomped on his bass when it was not performing as he wished - roadies quickly fixed the situation). He is also very physical with his keyboard, often playing it on a slant or in some distorted fashion. Myles Heskett on drums is mesmerising to watch, whether he waves a Canadian flag or not. These three Australians have clearly been adopted by Canada and I believe the feeling is mutual.

The fact that the band plays a Led Zeppelin tribute was not lost on me as they are so similar to Led Zeppelin, it is almost too comfortable (for me) - ha, intimating my age range here.

All the songs , White Unicorn, Mind’s eye, Dimension, Woman, Love Train, and Joker & the Thief draw huge audience approval, and Andrew kept thanking the crowd, almost self-consciously, for the adulation. He also strutted and stomped across the stage during songs - almost a dual personality - arrogant rock star during songs, humble musician between songs.

This is what surprised me - despite the Forum being horrible for live acts - Wolfmother’s set was seamless. The vocals were crisp and I could hear every word. It was a terrific gig, one that I will remember, and the audiences’ enthusiasm for this young trio will stay with me. I have to laugh when I think about Faith No More’s producer going on about how much Wolfmother ‘suck’, well, Matt Wallace, if only your band had ‘sucked’ this much...

Wolfmother continues rocking its way across Canada, selling out venues in the first four provinces. Don’t be surprised if their next tour involves larger and more crowded venues.

The first image is from Wikipedia and the latter is from my sad set. Ah well...

BONNAROO 2007 LINE-UP as of 2/14/07 -----

bonnaroo.gif

WOW This line-up is pretty good! Superfly is ON IT this year for Bonaroo. I must say the headliners are a little odd, but definatley will reach out to a wide range music audience. I like this line-up, because it is not TOO jambandish... if you know what I mean. I love my hippies and hipsters, but too many 2 year old kids running around with dreads is just depressing.
