Cartel: 'We Didn't Sell Out'

Cartel made a name for themselves in the pop-punk scene with a really catchy single called Honestly. Once their reality show Band in a Bubble debuted on MTV in 2007, they became known as something else -- sellouts.

For those who didn't catch the program, the band spent 20 days recording their new S/T album inside a giant fiberglass dome in New York City. They lived, ate and even slept inside of this huge bubble and fans were able to come by and see the process. Almost instantly, fans turned on them for taking part in this adventure.

"I still feel like a large majority of people didn't understand it. I still don't fully understand it. The way that it got promoted and the way it actually was were two different things," singer Will Pugh told The OC Register. Once the album was released, it didn't do as well as everyone expected it to do but the band was happy with what they had created. "We got to write the record we wanted to write, so as far as I'm concerned, we didn't sell out. We didn't do anything differently," Pugh explained.

Cartel have already begun working on their third record (without the help of a bubble) and are optimistic that their fans will eventually get over the whole bubble ordeal. "Once the next record comes out, I think people will be a lot more inclined to be like, 'OK, you've been forgiven,'" exclaimed Pugh. Only time will tell if the band can revive their career.

Do you think Cartel can make a comeback. Post your thoughts in the comments below!

They're not sellouts. I think it took guts to do what they did. They wrote an album in 20 days.

i usually tend to disagree whenever the term "sellout" is used. i love the new album, not as much as the first, but still. it sucks that they're getting crap for doing the whole MTV thing.

they're a good band though, i think they'll be fine.

jeez, not again. why is it that every time a band stars in a reality show featuring them locked inside a big fiberglass dome while recording their album, people say they sold out? i mean, come on...
cartelislifex7: 02/26/2008 4:35 AM
they are absolutely not sell outs.they spent all their time in the bubble talking to their fans..aha.

cartel,
seriously, i am positive that there is nothing to worry about. for everyone who didnt think your last album was "cartel" obviously didnt take time to listen and understand about who you guys really are. yeah, some fans are lost, but for people like me and many others, we are always behind you guys no matter what, loving every song and everything you do. hell, you guys can make a country song and id still love it no matter how much i hate country. just the fact that it came from you is what makes it amazing. some people dont really understand what the bubble was, and its just a way to get your name out there and be known, not a reality show. im a huge fan of both chroma and the 2nd album, both have totally unique and different sounds and no one can make better music then you guys and for anyone who doesnt realize that is a moron. you guys are a huge inspiration to me, and its so important to me. i promise im a fan forever and keep up your good work because no matter what, you guys are the best and every album impresses me more and more each and every time. one love

They will always by 'sellouts' to TRUE fans and it took a lot of courage to do what they did this summer. I doubt it was what people were expecting because it would have been a crappy album if the songs sounded alike on both records which would be saying that they don't have diverse preforming skills. Which all bands should have and it's great and says that they can always try new stuff and probably nail it 99.9 percent of the time.

CARTEL DID NOT SELL OUT!!!!!! I think the 2cd album was great whoever doesnt agree is probably deaf cuz they always make great music. When you listen to the EP, Chroma and Cartel you can hear that they make different sounds and take risks which most bands dont even do. So I cant wait for the third album. CARTEL ROCKS!!
