Listen To My Interview with Protest Singer David Rovics
Five years ago, KCSB brought folk musician David Rovics to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus for a live performance. He's been back in our area a few times since, with his latest concert scheduled for this Monday night, August 18th, in Oxnard. No less an expert than Amy Goodman has called Rovics' songs "the musical version of Democracy Now!" Others have compared him to the radical folk-music legend Phil Ochs.
On Friday afternoon, I conducted an hour-long live interview with David Rovics. Aside from an erratic overmodulation problem that I couldn't correct on the spot, it's one of my best works as an interviewer, I think. Also, I believe that Rovics is a hugely significant voice on the left, and I'd like to do my best to raise awareness of David and his work.
During the course of the interview, we discuss such topics as Rovics' artistic origins and influences; anarchism and progressivism across the generations; the recent passing of U. Utah Phillips; 9-11 conspiracy theories; and the music business in the internet age. Stay tuned as I rebroadcast our conversation during the 2nd hour of my radio program, "The Freak Power Ticket," which airs this summer on Mondays from 9-11am, Pacific Time, on KCSB. I'll also be posting this hour online: will update y'all when that occurs, as well.
What's more, during my show's first hour, I'll be discussing a handful of recent documentary films with UCSB Professor Emeritus Harry Lawton, including Man on Wire, Trumbo, and Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, as well as spinning Rovics' and others' music. Not sure how much I'll manage to get to. I think it'll be interesting, regardless – Harry's a gem.
For those of you in the Santa Barbara area, by the way, David Rovics will be performing on Monday, Aug. 18th, at the North Oxnard Methodist Church, 2300 West Gonzales Road, starting a 7pm. For tickets or more info call (805) 641-1789. This event is sponsored by the Ventura County Committee to Stop the War.
For those of you who've made it this far, thanks for reading this. I'm glad that there's an audience out there for what I do, and am excited about bringing such cool guests to you out there in "radioland!"
