May 17, 2009The Musical version of The War of the WorldsSo I was rooting through my parents old vinyl records, when I found Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. I was listening to said record yesterday afternoon, and recognised the recognisable voice of Phil Lynnot, who, for those of you who don't know, was the lead singer and bass player for Thin Lizzy. He played Parson Nathaniel, and portrayed the lunatic very well. It's set in 1904 and is narrated by a journalist who survived the attack. It starts with him telling us about how green flares were seen coming from Mars. They thought they were shooting stars. The astrologist said that they wouldn't hit earth ("The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one he said"), of course, he was very wrong! The martians landed near the town that the journalist lived in, and they started building machines, which, little did the humans know at the time, were to kill them. It isn't long before the army are trying to kill the aliens, but the only survivor is an artilleryman, who sneaks into the journalist's house in the morning. The artilleryman tells the journalist that there was another flare headed for London, and the journalist is then scared for his friend (we don't actually know what kind of relationship they had, so I'll just say they were friends) Carrie and her father, who live in London. The journalist and artilleryman then head for London. I would strongly recommend this for anyone who likes sci-fis and alien invasions. The eery music makes it even better. The musical is certainly much better than the movie, although parts are similar. If you don't have the record (or have the record but have no record player) I'm fairly certain that you can watch it on youtube. Enjoy!
