i would be so stoked on actually seeing a rainbow right now...

goo. to. this. weather. it's fully rainy and gross and weird in NYC today. however, the new Radiohead album, “In Rainbows” is available for download and i really can't think of tunes more fitting for today's vibe. am i right or am i right?

ok a) let me admit that i have never been a huge Radiohead fan. it's non-offensive music to me. i never really disliked them, but i would never really give myself the "fan" status. however, i'm am REALLY interested in how they're releasing this album and will support that in any way i can. (ie: buy the album and steal)

did any of you guys read the New York Times article (you need to log in) on Rick Rubin? it’s really interesting stuff, and it touches on how the music industry needs to drastically change how it sells music as a way to combat illegal downloading. so. effing. true. who thought that SUING the shit out of people, and keeping the old system would work? yikes. i’m also reading book right now that you should all check out called The Long Tail” by Chris Anderson (*see footnote) and it talks about business models for a digital world. it’s really really REALLY interesting. it basically lays the framework for companies and industries to change the way the sell their products. it also talks a lot about the history of selling things and it's pretty easy to see how the businesses  have had to adapt to changes in culture in order to increase their profits.

i’m not saying this Radiohead system is exactly the way to go, but it's shaking things up a bit right? i fully believe that people are instinctively good humans and we are OK with paying someone for a respectable service and a quality product. (as long as it’s fair to us). when given the opportunity people want to do the “right” thing. here is good music, at a fair price, it’s easy for me to consume and once I buy it, it’s mine with few limitations. perfect.

holy round table discussion batman…

ok so, who bought this album? what do you think about the music? what do you think of the way it was sold? what would be your ideal way to buy music? ohhh I have a million more questions. gimme your thoughts!

(*you can read an article on "The Long Tail" that was published in Wired Magazine here. It will give you a sense of what the book is about")

I think it's freakin genius. Some albums I love so much I'd pay $20 for them.
I'm not totally a radiohead fan either, but I'm pretty much in love with the idea

Good Lord, I adore this album. Such a pleasant surprise to listen to.

I need to give a few more spins, but so far, "Nude" is my favorite.

agreed. I ENJOY PAYING FOR MUSIC I LIKE! wow. what a genius idea.
Such a pleasant surprise to listen to.
like i said, i was never a radiohead fan. but this is seriously hitting the spot today.

do you guys think this is the ideal way to buy music? i'm really into the fact that i can buy i digital download before the physical if i want it. or take just take one. some albums i don't need on an actual cd, but some i'd just like to have.

also check out you two and your nifty icons! hahaha.

I prefer purchasing the physical cd, just because the sound quality will always always be better than mp3/mp4 format. But I do like when labels sell 12" with a free download of the entire album, then I can have the pretty vinyl and still hear the music in the car, regardless of the lesser sound quality.

also I think a band like radiohead can do this, but smaller ones really can't afford to.

It's an awesome Idea. It shows if they have respect for your music or not.

well i think "free" or "pay what you want" is a little extreme for smaller bands, but i assume i system like this has to be possible right?

another example: the format gaving away 'dog problems' for free a few months ago.

Oh man, "Bodysnatchers" is so poppy and incredible.

I, too, am a huge fan of a physical album, but I also tend to buy vinyl. I love that labels are now offering a digital download if you buy the record. Genius.

It's a pretty solid album. I'm loving it. Easily one of the best albums of the year.
