Burka Band: Burka Blue (in English)

The Burka Band is an Afghan all-girl trio who sing and rap clad in burkas, the full hijab which covers a woman's whole body including her face. They are Afghanistan's first serious pop band since the fall of the Taliban.

This video appeared on a German TV station, and after the announcer makes his pitch, the group performs their debut single Burka Blue in English.

This mystery group from Kabul was created by a German record company who were in the country holding music workshops for locals. The three women were then put together to form the burka-clad all girl band. The trio includes a drummer, a guitar player and a vocalist, and they perform in English.

Their debut single Burka Blue became a cult hit and was playing across clubs in Europe. A music video was also made and shows the three women in a recording studio and in the desert.

Listen carefully to the lyrics, which include:

You give me all your love,
you give me all your kisses,
and then you touch my Burka
and do not know who is it.

and

My mother wears blue jeans now,
and I am so surprised,
the things are changing more faster,
I don`t know if its right...

As one critic noted, their melodies and music are quite simple and direct, and once you hear their lyrics, the song is hard to get out of your head.

But where are they now? Are they in hiding, in fear of repression by intolerant fundamentalists?

Strange indeed, but also the type of sound that seems to stick with you, and can be hard to get out of your head. Not top-40 material, but it does make a statement.

They're probably the washed up Spice Girls in wierd drag.

Abby, your wit is obviously in high gear again!

But washed up Spice Girls? Don't think so, because (1) the drum and guitar are in sync, (2) the body movements here are too feminine for Spice Girls, and (3) you can understand the lyrics.

Abby is on a roll again - world, watch out!

Lex, you know, I would rather take my chances with one of these than any of the Spice Girls. I love the element of surprise!
