Bands That Made Me Leave SXSW 2009 Wanting More Live Music

In no particular order except maybe one and two, because they really did it for me ... I hope to see this list of bands a dozen more times in 2009. I hope that you Buzzneters also take a bit of my experience with these bands and bring it to your own iPods or ticket purchases in 2009. If I was rewarded a trophy for having the most fun at SXSW 2009 I would for sure have to thank these 10 bands in my acceptance speech. Read on to find out who I heart ...

SXSW 2009: 3/19/09 Sweet & Short Round-Up

First band I saw was also my favorite band I saw yesterday and they go by the name of Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. Energy may have been the band's strongest asset, which for me stage presence dictates all. If you don't get to check them out at SXSW they will be opening on tour with Lily Allen through April. Pics and roundup...

SXSW: Day Two Roundup

After waking up at the crack of noon, I decided to hoof it to a couple day parties. First up was the Spin House, which was actually the second floor of some swanky bar. The place was swarming with music insider-types and rando band members, who were getting their brains picked by John Norris (the curly-haired old-ish dude from MTV News). The drinks were great, the swag was lame but what was most noteworthy were the girls in tied-up T-shirts and pink Converse who tried to talk to you about how awesome Flip video cameras were. (Sidenote: Flip was a sponsor of the room.) I mean, don't get me wrong. Flips are awesome—but they somehow become less awesome when a chick who looks like a Hooters waitress tries to explain how to point and shoot. However, all was not lost at the shindig. I saw Taylor Hanson—and he looked like a babeasaurus. Yeah, I said it.

Next up was a rooftop party thrown by Alternative Press, my alma mater of sorts. It was really loud and the floor was sticky. Dirtblonde were DJing, though, and I almost lost it when they played "What A Waster" by The Libertines. (That song used to be my jam before Pete Dougherty turned into a human pin cushion.)

Here are some more highlights:

- Having dinner with Joe Levy, one of the dopest music writers, like, ever. He used to work at Rolling Stone up until about a year ago, which is when he started up at Blender. He's super talented and is totes a role model to this lil' lady. We talked about iCarly (my new fave show) and it was a hot slice of heaven. Yeah, I'm a writing geek. What?

- Seeing Two Hours Traffic, one of the best bands you probably don't know about. In their native Canada, they're major critical darlings (having won a Juno and all. That's the Canadian version of a Grammy. FYI). But here, they're just a bunch of normal-looking dudes who play the sweetest rock 'n' roll this side of... um... er... whatever the divide is between the U.S. and the Great White North. If you like Limbeck and Wilco, you should most def check 'em out!!

- Eating a red velvet cupcake from a truck on the street. It wasn't just any truck. It was the Hey Cupcake truck! Some weirdo came up to me and asked me where I got it and all I could get out in all my excitement was, "There's a truck! There's a truck!" The truck didn't exactly look like this, but you get the picture:
