I Miss Her and I Blame Marshall Farms!
A few years ago I decided to buy a pet ferret, I named her Dakota and actually ended up buying a companion for her... a male that I named Bear. These ferrets were bought from Uncle Bills Pet Center, who purchased them from Marshall Farms. A deplorable company that farms animals for purchase, but that's not why I dislike the company. They have been at odds before with PETA and other activist groups for their lab experimentations and also their choice to spay and neuter baby animals such as ferrets. Before I knew all of this I expected my new pets to live for at least 7 years or longer.
That's not always the case with ferrets from Marshall Farms because it is believed that illnesses such as insulinoma, adrenal cancer and lymphoma appear much earlier in life for those ferrets that have been 'fixed' at such a young age. Sure enough within four years of having Dakota she came down with adrenal cancer and I had to have her put to sleep about a month ago. It was hard to watch her suffer... barely able to walk, to eat, she began losing control of her facilities, and even her hair began falling out. This is abnormal for four year old ferrets bred by other breeders.
The suffering of these animals is unjust and it's happening daily... thousands of pet owners are having to put their animals to sleep and are having to suffer themselves with medical costs and the pain of losing a pet. This is a true injustice... and I'm glad to have a chance to voice that.
I've included a picture of me holding her when she was about 2 years old. It's been almost two months since I had her put to sleep and this picture reminds me of the good times I had with her, she was a cute and curious pet that definitely deserved to live longer than she did.
