10 Steps: Music Life Story

I was tagged by evilnarc9 (loves ya :) ) and I am going to try to do this the best way I can, lol:

  • 1. Tell us in 10 steps your music life story
  • 2. You tag 10 people.
  • 3. You CANNOT tag someone who has already been tagged.
  • 4. You have to let the people you tagged know that they've been tagged.
  • 10. My music life story started with my father always playing 'classic rock' around the house. I grew up with songs from Queen, Santana, Jethro Tull, Eddie Money etc..

    9. Through my father I also feel in love with the sound of jazz music, most importantly Ella Fitzgerald whom to this day I still listen to, to help me relax. I also found the amazing sounds of Gladys Knight, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw etc... It also doesn't hurt that I am from Kansas City and have spent many nights in the jazz district taking in the lovely sounds.

    8. Then the early 90's I was introduced to the an amazing band named Nirvana. I remember in 1991 hearing Nirvana's "Nevermind" and hearing the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" pumping through the speakers of a local hangout. It definitly changed the face of music for me.

    7. Around 1995/1996 I was introduced to the sound of AFI through a friend of mine. He played the AFI/Heckle split record for me and I instantly took to AFI (one of the best bands, in my honest opinion).

    6. Also mid 90's I was beginning my love of electronic/dance music. Nothing in particular sparked my interest, it was moreso the beats of the music that I loved. I just wanted to dance.

    5. Near the end of the 90's I was introduced to more industrial music, punk rock music and modern rock as well. I grew into someone who craved different sounds and wanted to see what interesting sounds people were coming out with. So basically near the end of the 90's I was musically curious and paying attention to everything around me. From AFI to *NSYNC to VNV Nation to Nine Inch Nails, I was listening to just about everything.

    4. At the beginning of the millennium I was introduced to the sounds of club land, which was basically industrial music. I became obsessed with hearing the new sounds coming out from the industrial world; I remember listening to Throbbing Gristle, Chrome, Ministry, Young Gods, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Coil etc...

    3. Near 2003 I was becoming a little disappointed in music. I felt that much of what I was hearing was the same stuff just re-worked a little bit until I heard 'Sing The Sorrow' which, in my opinion, is one of the best albums in the last few years. The lyrics are utterly amazing/mesmerizing/unique etc...the vocals are amazing...everything just flowed well together and re-ignited my love for music and caused me to hold out hope for better things to come.

    2. Around 2005 I began to miss AFI (of course) but knew something huge would come from them but I wasn't entirely bored with music. In 2005 I became a bigger fan of punk rock, mosh pits and stage dives. I learned to appreciate it more and more and I think it's because of the people that I surrounded myself with. It seems that my love/respect for music grew.

    1. Now I am basically into everything. With the invention of the IPOD's I've learned to shuffle my tastes around. One minute I'll be listening to the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald but then change it to Blaqk Audio or Nine Inch Nails. My musical tastes have matured but I've learned to respect music and what artists are creating. Music is an art and it's precious to many artists out there. The lyrics speak tell a story, you're hearing their words coming from their heart. It's amazing to me that artists are able to make themselves vulnerable in a way by producing such honest pieces of work and putting themselves into their music. Of course not every artist is the same but a majority of true artists who write their songs, write from experiences/sadness/heartbreak/love etc....These people are opening themselves up to their listeners and I can only wish that people appreciated that a little bit more.
