12 Year Old Sex Change: Too Young?

A German lad named Tim -- who has presumably worn out his/her DVD copy of Hedwig and the Angry Inch -- is well along the way to becoming a German lass named Kim

The 12-year-old has begun hormone therapy preparatory to gender-realignment surgery, with the blessing of his/her parents and the doctors assigned to evaluating his/her best interests.

According to published reports, Tim functions in home and school as a girl and is perfectly normal.

Is a child intellectually and emotionally equipped to make such a life-changing decision?

That's pretty cool. If he/she's sure, better to get it done now than wait too long. I wonder if this story will turn up in Seventeen magazine...

That's amazing that their parents are so supportive at such a young age
its nice to see that they've been blessed with accepting parents
and if the picture is of them above , then they're goregeous

It really could be a phase, he/she is so young.

This is totally as wrong as taking twins and gender reassigning one like they use to do 30 years ago or so. That proved to be very wrong an unethical. It also brings up a huge debate about gender identification and sexuality. This is so wrong if i was this childs parent I would no give him hormone therapy until he was past puberty. dress like a girl but no hormones until you are a man!!!!!!!!!!

i think having a sex change is a very personal question. i think the kid should wait a few years before she gets the sex change. like at age 15. a person needs time to think on such things. but maby this has been a dream for years for this troubled boy. i think the only one who should decide if a sex change is right or not is the person who wants it. there are many factors to concider there fore it is wrong for me to say if what his person is doing is right or not.

Damn I commented in the wrong place. Anyway, this should not be done before the kid has developed... both physically and emotionally.

Um... I'd say so. What if the child changes his/her mind in a year or so?
valuunxaluminum: 01/29/2007 3:45 PM
exactly.

I think the parents should hold up the sex change for atleast a year and do as much research as possible, because I agree with reeshi, What if he/she changes their mind when it's too late?

I think only the child knows what they really want and it is not another persons place to tell them how to live their life without knowing the child well and knowing their situation well but I also think that at 12 children are still emotionally unstable and still not physically developed and having a sex change at this age could be devestating or confusing or on the other hand the child could be extremely happy but waiting a few more years and talking to thier doctors parents and a therapist along with lots of research to find out if it is really the right choice and then having the sex change would be better the child would still be able to make the change but they would be more sure that this was what they absolutely wanted and not just a very confusing phase

OK! I'm 13 and I have friends that are bi friends that have had sex some that smoke but I have done of these thing yes I have qustioned my sexuality but I would defintaly tell this person to wait to make a discion like this because things like this you can't change young poeple that think they are bi can decied to be straight sex you can't undo but you can get an abortoin or use protection and if you smoke you can use all kinds of things to help get over that but haveing a sex change you can never chang or take back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG this is so werid cause i am 12! but if i was this person i would wait like a year or 2 longer because i find when u r young u have all these mixed feelings about one another. But its really great that he/or/she's parents or so supportive and there not like gonna walk out on the kid itz nice to no that! but i would still wait until im like 16 or mabey 17 to see if this is wat i would really want 2 be!
rockonbaby: 01/29/2007 9:25 PM
i think the younger you are, the easier it is. because it's so much more difficult for adults to get sex changes these days....but what i'm not understanding is, was it the parent's idea to change the sex of their child? or the child's idea? btw, she is beautiful.
