Motion City Soundtrack Show(-the mcs)

Ahh. I just biked nineteen miles and I’m tired. We were going to do twelve but that didn’t happen. I had only eaten a pretzel until mile nine. Okay now on to the fun.

Last night I went to the House of Blues with my dad and friend. It was Motion City Soundtrack, but I didn’t care for them as much as everything else. The tour was The Swellers, This Providence, Set Your Goals, and Motion City Soundtrack. The show was on Valentine’s Day. I got to spend it with the Diener Brothers. Score!

Waiting outside was pretty fun. A bunch of stereotypical second millennium emo. Typical Clandestine wearing (one had the heartskull tattoo on her neck) kids in line. One chick behind us was pissing me off. Saying how the Swellers and SYG were lame but This Providence and MCS were amazing. I’m not against This Providence, but I wouldn’t pay to see their show. My friend wanted to know if it was Michael Cera and his Asian girlfriend because her date was awkward. There was a couple who I think made out the whole show. Gotta love them. I got a Set Your Goals T-shirt and ran into some friends. They’re at the other campus at my school (it goes 7-9 and 10-12) and I miss them soooo much. We used to find funny pictures of scene people or Jeffree Starr. The good ole days. We ran upstairs and watched from the side.

The lovely surprise was Garfunkel and Oates. One of them was Ted’s girlfriend in Scrubs and my friend knew one of their songs. We were upset that we didn’t bring one of our friends because he LOVES Scrubs. They were hilarious and personally stole the whole show. Ukulele and acoustic guitar and some hilarious girls were awesome. Songs were great. One about how two people were in a platonic friendship and they would never have sex. The other memorable love themed song was about ‘Steve’ who was the third wheel on all of a couple’s dates. Other songs included sex with ducks(about Pat Robertson and gay marriage) and an ever so true song about pregnant women.

The Swellers were next and they were awesome. The way the sound carried to the upper levels was a bit cruddy but if you listened past the noise they sounded good. This girl asked if they were DTF and Nick and Anto were saying it was Detroit Forever. Bluntly the girl says Down to Fuck and he cracks up and say no. To my disappointment This Providence was on next so we wouldn’t be able to get out early. His voice was extra whiney that show and we just hid in the restaurant until SYG came on. I played on my friends iTouch and we found out that an intense hair metal band plays there every week. Now I really want to go. We went downstairs to get Swellers merch and talked to Nick and Jono, who I love, about the tour. I asked about the bass set up because it’s what I do at every show. Everyone uses and ampeg through different heads and, score for me, I have an ampeg. I don’t really need to ask them there since you can see online, but they get super excited.

Set Your Goals came on and it was necessary to jump up and down. We went upstairs and to stage left. I sang to the songs, but for the most part watched the band and the crowd. I saw Bree(Breesays). The only other time I saw her at a show was at the sounds of buzz FTSK show and everyone from Buzznet was there. We are always at the same shows and this was first in finding her at the show before she posted something. Tweeted her after the show because I couldn’t say hi to her. We also watched a hilarious circle pit form. As weird as it sounds, All Time Low has some of the most true to form circle pits and walls of death. Some guys were skanking like you should at a Streetlight Manifesto concert. One guy was doing roundhouse kicks and we were laughing our asses off. During Equals, I stopped watching the crowd and sang/screamed. After I went back to almost peeing my pants and this guy who would have been beaten up at a Streetlight Concert. You have to notice your surroundings. We left after that and drove the short distance from Sunset to Wilshire and went to watch the Olympics.

Fires, Luge, SHIROCK, Spanish and the weekend

Time for my update in life that none of y'all read

On Wednesday we were watching American Idol in my parents room. Even though Ellen has no musical right to be judging, she did seem to understand what made a good performance or talent. But after we were done is when everything happened. My brother went to bed and I was doing sudoku next to my parents like a good little geek. I was heading to my room when my dad started telling us that there was a fire and we needed to go. My mom and I were in striped pajamas and somehow my brother got dressed so quickly. It was our neighbors’ garage that burned. The windows blew out when it happened. We were waiting outside as the fire trucks came.

Let me give you some info on my neighbors. I used to get dressed last year (we’ve lived there for two years) and here our neighbor yell to ‘Jimmy!’ who I assumed was her son. The first time I heard Jimmy call back I almost shat my pants. Super deep voice, who turns out to be her husband. He’s pretty cool. She seems pretty crazy.

She was on the phone with their daughter, as the garage burned, and yelled at her. We had to show the police and firemen where the garage was. Our street is super secluded and they were going the wrong way. I was just tweeting and my brother was being adorable. He told me that he was wearing socks and shoes but no socks on his feet. He got dressed so quickly. His socks were in his shoes as he got them on. I wish I could get ready that quick and not have to wake up at 6:30 to get to school. We went back inside and listened to all the people talk. The wife was asking the firemen why they had to spray something. Apparently they would ruin something. The fireman replied calmly, “What do you want me to do with these flames?” and it was amazing. Sarcastic firemen made my night. I had to go to sleep to flashing lights and the strong smell of burning which made me want popcorn.

The better part is the next day I learned Paramore got a shitload of fire trucks to a restaurant after burning it. We got four. They beat us.

Olympics have started. The luge thing surprised a bunch of people, but not me. The thing is that a good chunk of the sports in the winter olympics are considered extreme. Basically, the sports in the winter x-games are in the winter olympics. Only a few summer olympic sports are considered extreme. White water rafting and some other stuff. Summer x-game sports aren't really in the summer olympics. Just goes to show you how much more dangerous. Ice just means ouch to me. Slip and fall and your butt is sore and numb. Well that is just how I ice skate. My grandma doesn't even want to watch any of that because my mom used to ice skate and fell. She hasn't since.

I hate my spanish teacher. Sr J., if you're reading this: You can't teach, you aren't that amazing, accept that some of us are smart and don't want to do elementary work, accept that we can have inside jokes, there is nothing special about teaching college spanish. Oh and some of you in my class. Realize I'm doing a favor. I am taking up your damned class time. My friend and I were being funny in spanish! They have us do what you did in third grade. I can speak spanish with my cousins and uncle(some of them are from spain) but don't feel like doing the lame homework. Hey Sr. Jurado! Get over yourself and learn to teach. I'm sure you're a great guy.

Long weekend is coming up. I have to do some great projects that I haven't started! yay! I have to lead a jazz combo. We really want to do a TV show medley. Simpsons, family guy, and then end with the office. Instead of doing piano, which is so predictable, we would have the bass parts with trombone, mid with the saxes, and high with trumpet. Guitar would do chords, drums the beat , and bass (me) would do my mix of the two. As lead I have to transpose all the parts to be read by everyone and all this shit. Ahhh. I got my hair cut and it's so wierd to me. My mom made me do my nails and now my pinkies are different colors from the other nails! Score! I'm going to the Motion City Soundtrack, Set Your Goals, Swellers, and This Providence. Really going for The Swellers and Set Your Goals.

Check out SHIROCK! Really excited about this internship and I think you guys would like them.

The Only Exception and Torrence

I woke up today at 11. It was amazing. Finals finished on thursday. Who doesn't just love ten hours of tests. I finish my semester break on wednesday. We realized that I need more storage space and want to  be able to move my drumset out of the closet(its going to become a fellow open gay as our gay friend said) and have a better band practice. I also love things that hold things and organize them. I'm very odd.

We headed to Torrence to the Ikea. We saw a starbucks and a FedEx that was necessary to send my 'The Only Exception' valentines card in time. I read my mom the entry (i printed it out for the address) and she decided they had to be backed on pink and red so we got some hot pink paper and some red paper. I glued my cards (I did two) and my mom set to work on hers. We wanted to copy them once they were made so I could keep it. [a/n: Basically we had this whole role reversal the whole day where I was the mother for a lot of the day. It was a bit of a joke but I am pretty motherly to my brother and baby cousin.] I only showed my mother one of the cards that I made. She did one to my dad that was uber tacky and adorable. Therefore I needed to keep it. As we print it out, the lady helping us is staring at the sheet with the copy of both my cards. I explained the top one in hopes that she would realize that I wanted it back. Then I gave up and she read and complemented me on the second. She said I needed to be a writer. I told her I was a lyricist for my band. She now wants to know all about my band and get cd's.

My first card was a quote from Dr Suess, that I read a while ago in a book (not of his). "You know your in love when you can't fall asleep because your reality is finally better than your dreams." My moms was tacky and was to my dad (they went out senoir yr of high school, broke up, went out with other people who we are friends with, stayed friends, and then got back together junior year of college.) It said something about how they met in high school and twenty something years later they have 2 boys and a crazy girl who told them about Paramore. On the inside it had a kiss and it said 'MWAH'. Mind you this is the woman that asked if I wanted to invite people Chayley staking with me.My one that I wrote I don't like too much. I tried to keep it away from lovey dovey and all the crazy messes that are going through right now so I wrote to those people who understand me. My friends right now, maybe someone else later. It says:

"NEVER BEFORE was I understood

Life is just as tough as before

if not more

NEVER BEFORE have I been

happier..."

I kinda want to write that into one of our songs. Writing sesh tomorrow! We made a friend in the FedEx and we walked out laughing.

We went to Ikea to get all our crap and besides the role reversal we had a good amount of fun. I laughed at all the crazy swedish food they were selling. Caviar and lemon salt and nasty rotten looking fish. Gotta love them meatball, of which they had about a thousand different meals you could choose from. As we were heading out we got help putting a rather heavy piece of swedish furniture on our cart. My mom says to him "if you can handle the pain of that tattoo then you can lift it right?" We laugh and talk. I see his tattoo on the top of his wrist. It says 'Phantom Planet' and I say to him "Phantom Planet, good band. Do you have the keyboard circle thing?" On the inside of the wrist he has it. Turns out his friends are phantom planet and he helped create the design with them. I told my mom that they were on final riot. He plays bass and keys but says music is too crazy. Maybe I am out of the loop but he says they are getting back together. I knew about the different bands they were doing. Now I'm excited. After Ikea I showed my mother my amazing tetris skills my packing everything amazingly in our car. We stopped by this sample maker who my mother is working with and it was good fun. She was 86 and reminded me of my great grandma. I miss my old blanket now. I sleep with a stuffed animal penguin every night though and it is more durable than a blanket. I don't plan to stop. On the way back I stole my brothers iTouch and played TRISM. A game, that because of my tetris and other awesome game talents, i got high scores every single game.

Now I am sitting at home, getting ready to turn on House and love every second of it. Hadley/ 13 has a secret according to fox commercials. Oh and I'm not going to our school'c semiformal because I want to hang out with my awesome family and play poker and talk and eat food.. Yeah, I am that wierd. The one guy I wanted as a date can't make it and it wouldn't have been fun anyway. Overratted. Gotta go buy tickets for the This Providence, Set Your Goals, The Swellers, and Motion City Soundtrack show!

Set Your Goals In Hayley's Top Bands of 2010

Set Your Goals has been picked as one of Hayley Williams' (Paramore) favorite bands of 2010! Check out what she has to say about the band below.

"My old roomie Hannah had this hoodie that she sponge-stamped the words 'SET YOUR GOALS' onto and wore just about every day in high school. It wasn't until I was on the Warped Tour a couple years later that I ran up to these dudes and introduced myself. By this point, we've toured the country together, explored haunted venues, had some Buffalo Wild Wings and hung out in Hamburg, Germany, of all places. Their new album, This Will Be the Death of Us, is out now and slays me. I got to sing on one of the tracks, 'The Few That Remain,' too. I'm pretty lucky."

Song of the Day - Set Your Goals "Echoes"

**1/19/10
Set Your Goals - Echoes
-------------Continuing with the punk phase here. Ever since Avril hung up her skull-flower "I'm-acoustic-but-my-label-made-me-hardcore" image, punk seems to have taken an upswing. Hence, Set Your Goals, one of female rocker Haley Williams' favorite bands right now. Sounds like Set Your Goals spent some time in the studio with Blink or The Starting Line - any fans will approve with a tremendous "hell yeah!"

Set Your Goals reminds me of all the stuff that inspired me to wear Converse and paint my nails black in middle school. It brings me back to those simpler, angstier times...aah, to have those days back when mom had to drop me off at the skate park...Anyways, you can wax nostalgia or polish off a copy of Set Your Goals 2008 album Mutiny: The Deluxe Edition. Also check out their new album, This Will Be the Death of Us.
