7) Lars & The Real Girl
I went into this movie expecting nothing but an absurd, ridiculous, and over-the-top comedy. Man, I was totally taken back by this.
It caused me to, first off, realize what a tremendous actor Ryan Gosling is. (Because of this movie, I immediately went and got Half Nelson and thoroughly enjoyed that too.) While a great deal of this movie is full of hilarious sight gags and incredibly awkward scenes, by the end, it's a moving portrait of mental disease. There's a scene by the lake that almost had me crying. During a movie about a man who falls in love with a Real Doll.
Don't underestimate this film. It's way more intelligent than it appears.
