the Lapis Niger and the burial spot of Romulus
in the background to the left is some fencing surrounding the lapis niger, or the floor of the Comitium which dated from Republican times, where citizens could come to hear the speeches of legislators who spoke from the Rostra. The Comitium was supposed to have been built on the burial spot of the founder of Rome, Romulus. The stairway in the foreground, leads down to an archaeological site dating to the time of Romulus, around 700 BC, and contained human remains, all of which is totally amazing.
