Katy Perry: Gonna Dress You Up With My... Sharpie?

Katy Perry done got censored in Saudi Arabia. But 'twas not a simple bleep or a black bar, though--this took much more effort.

Idolator posted a story this morning about a blogger who went to pick up One Of The Boys for her kid and found that the cover and some of the interior photos had been doctored. Check the side-by-sides:

You might be saying to yourself, "I see what they did there," but DO YOU REALLY?

Katy's limbs, my friends, are colored in with marker.

It's the work of Saudi Arabia's Committee For Protection Of Virtue and Prevention Of Vice, which makes sure Saudi citizens adhere to Islamic guidelines regarding dress, morality, and prayer.

The Saudi blogger points out:

Now those of you who have purchased CDs know how much trouble it is to take that plastic wrap off. And then to remove the front insert and especially removing the back insert from the CD case without breaking the plastic case can be tricky. So what it all boils down to is that the Saudi government is actually paying religious police members of the Committee for the Protection of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CVPVP) to remove the plastic wrap from these CDs, open up the CD cases, remove the front and back inserts, and carefully and painstakingly color in with a marker any photos baring exposed female flesh that is deemed objectionable.

The whole point of this is, well, I really miss paper dolls. So I made Katy a new outfit:

FUN TIMES YAY!

You can either repond with your thoughts on this peculiar censorship technique or you can go to polyvore.com, pick new katy outfits and show me some photoshop magicz. Or you can do both. Whatever suits you.

Do you think Saudi Arabia's Committee For Protection Of Virtue and Prevention Of Vice has a tipline? Will someone call them about Brokencyde and tell them that band is ruining humanity?

So they just colored every cd individually? wow. That is stupid and time consuming...but hey if it goes against your culture, go ahead and waste your time.

I...... am a little suprised that they would take the time to do that... but whatever floats your boat I suppose.
noliesjustlovee: 04/16/2009 7:34 PM
haha. lol @ breesays. they should've probably consulted Katy before they colored her in. that is a little overboard. maybe they could have worked out a deal to shoot an alternate cover for Katy's album for overseas fans?
whoathere: 04/16/2009 7:48 PM
can see why they did this but why didn't they just order new covers, or print outs?

Seems so dumb but its their culture. And someone definitely needs to tell them about Brokencyde so maybe someone could just shoot them!
breesays: 04/16/2009 9:31 PM
i can see why they did it(my friend is muslim and practices islamic law and whatnot) but it's a bit extreme.
I respect the culture but im just baffled there wasn't a more time efficient way of reaching the goal.
or just not selling the cds? isnt that what wal mart does?
laurenlipstick: 04/16/2009 10:42 PM
Uhm, isn't it kinda ridiculous that they are selling it in the first place? HELLO, I KISSED A GIRL? From what I understand they don't really like girls kissing girls. Or girls kissing anyone. ridiculous.

Maybe it was Arts & Crafts Day and everyone was given a CD cover to color? Yay, teamwork!

I do respect them but I just think they should also respect what others believe in too.! Even if it does mean katy perry lying on a sunbed half naked :]

Bahahahaha This reminds me of the Glamour magazine I bought 2 years ago in Pakistan.. and guess what, there were nude models (could we call them as models?? Whatevs) so they colored the models' boobs with a black marker.
But Kay Perry.. Oh c'mon!
opaline: 04/17/2009 8:00 AM
um, they mustn't of had many Katy Perry CDs then.
coudn't they have just photoshopped it?!
iamyourguiltypleasure: 04/17/2009 11:09 AM
i think they can do whatever they want..but i think they could "censore" those photos better x'D i think it looks really funny :D but i have to say i'm muslim and i think this is maybe a bit extreme! now everybody thinks that muslim girls don't wear shorts, bikinis or whatever..i think that's pity because it's not like that
