Top Ten Albums (Or EP's) Of 2009

I enjoy making lists.  Actually, I enjoy writing, period.  But when it has something to do with something I'm passionate about (music this time), well, it just makes it all the better because I'll be voicing my opinion about something I love.  And I don't care if you read it (though I rather you do), cause it's my escape.

Now, before I stop making sense (I think I already have), I'm gonna start my list!

10. No One's First, And You're Next - Modest Mouse

I was first introduced to Modest Mouse by my brother somewhere between 2002 and 2004 with the song Float On.  I was immediately, I fell in love.  But, seeing as it was one of my brother's bands, I forget them all together.  Imagine my happiness when I pass through this EP.  It doesn't matter if you're not into indie rock, because The Whale Song will tear you to pieces.  It's a (mostly) instrumental song and fairly simple, but it's that type of song that slips deep into your skin.

Check out:

The Whale Song

Satellite Skin

Autumn Beds

9. Brand New Eyes - Paramore

After gaining a larger fanbase with their album Riot! and later on with their appearance on the Twilight Soundtrack along with almost falling apart, Paramore strikes back with Brand New Eyes.  To me, it seems as though most bands' third studio albums are their worst (or least good in cases - and yes, there's a difference), but Paramore has just taken out their best work.  It still has the force that Riot had, but also includes some from their earlier All We Know Is Falling.  the album was written by front woman Hayley Williams, mostly about the anger between the band members at the time.  The lyrics are beautifully written, yet still have that angst we all know and love.  Now I am told that this is life/ That pain is just a simple compromise/ So we can get what we want out of it she sings in Misguided Ghosts.  No wonder it's on this list.

Check out:

Brick By Boring Brick

Feeling Sorry

Misguided Ghosts

8. It's Blitz! - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have come a long way since their debut album Fever To Tell in 2003.  An album and EP later, they have released It's Blitz!  With catchy songs like Zero and Heads Will Roll, Yeah Yeah Yeahs makes their comeback after not taking out any material since 2007.  Karen O's voice is just as mezmerizing as ever, their songs just as intoxicating.  There's not much more to say.  Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an amazing band, and this is just another piece of proof.

Check out:

Heads Will Roll

Skeletons

Dragon Queen

7. Sainthood - Tegan And Sara

Thier sixth studio album, Sainthood isn't quite what you would expect from the Quin sisters Tegan and Sara.  Produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, Sainthood adds more pop to the follow up of The Con.  Despite the differences between Sainthood and their previous studio albums, the Quin sisters have managed to make another batch of amazing music.

Chek out:

Hell

The Cure

Someday

6.Daisy - Brand New

With a lot more screaming than The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me, Daisy is their fourth studio album, their second on a major label.  The lyrics on the songs are all about rage, and Jesse Lacey's voice suits it all well.  I'll admit, I haven't been a fan of Brand New for a long.  Actually, I just picked up Daisy at a Hot Topic after realizing they didn't have Pearl Jam's Backspacer, but not once did I regret buying this album.  It was just a gateway to another amazing band I have grown to love.  Because we all need that one loud album full of rage when we want to escape the world.

Check out:

Beds

Sink

At The Bottom

5. The Resistance - Muse

The first Muse song I ever heard was Sunburn during 2007.  The first thing that came to mind?  Where have they been my whole life?  Muse is altogether an amazing band.  They have the lyrics, they have the vocalist, they have the musicians and, hey, they're English.  The Resistance is the band's fifth studio album and yet another reminder of Muse's absolute awesomeness.  After listening to Uprising during the VMA's (which were horrible, may I add) I was overly excited.  So much that I bought it the day after it came out.  doesn't sound much of a dedication does it?  Well, there wasn't a single record store in town that sold it.  I present to you: MUSE.

Check out:

Uprising

Undisclosed Desires

MK Ultra

4. Backspacer - Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam.  Remember, Pearl Jam was one of the main bands during the grunge movement during the 90's alongside Nirvana.  And just like Nirvana, there was a tragedy involving the band, though none of it's members had died.  Instead nine fans had died (click here for the rest of the article).  And, again, just like Nirvana, I am a big fan of Pearl Jam.  Eddie Vedder's voice makes them stand out, and the lyrics themselves are a masterpiece.  Just listen to Just Breathe.  Their music manages to make you feel what they play, what they sing.  The only reason why this isn't higher up on my list is because I don't own it yet.

Check out:

The Fixer

Just Breathe

3. Say Anything - Say Anything

Do you remember I Can Get Sexual Too?  Only Say Anything can come up with music like that.  Only Max Bemis can come up with lyrics like those.  And their 2009 self titled album is no exeption.  My personal favorite is Mara And Me with lyrics such as Ther eare babies with guns/ beaheading their friends/ in shopping malls all 'round the worl.  Yet somehow the Kings Of Leon/ still find time to write songs about girls.

Check out:

Mara And Me

Do Better

Eloise

2.This Is War - 30 Seconds To Mars

In my mind, Jared Leto is a geinos.  Then again, you are at liberty to disagree.  But for the time being, IT'S MY FUCKING LIST AND I PUT WHOEVER I FUCKING WANT.  Ahem.  Right.  NAyway, Jared Leto is not only an amazing actor, but also an amazing singer/musician.  You want to tell me what other actor has begun a music career and, not only succeded, but did it as well as he has?  Alongside his brother Shannon on drums and Tomo Milicevic on guitar, 30Seconds To Mars has taken out This Is War on December 8, which just happens to be my birthday.  Kings And Queens is the first single with a video so amazing I'm posting it instead of just putting the link.  Other songs such as Vox Populi remind you why you ever loved (and still do) 30 Seconds To Mars.  This Is War is the full package.  Period.

Check out:

Vox Populi

Alibi

Night Of The Hunter

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix

I'll admit, I don't know anything about this band.  They're from France, they have two songs that have been on a comercial and it's their third album.  But their songs are amazing.  They make you want to get up and dance or geto on your convertable and drive alongside the beach, but still have this edge to it that sets them apart form the rest.  There's nothing more I can say.  Their songs will speak much more than I can ever say.

Check out:

1901

Rome

Fences

Thanks for reading this!  You have no clue how long it took me to write this.  My dinasour of a lap top decided that it didn't want to recieve my WiFi and so I had to go to the study room, but my brother was here, so I only gat the inbetweens while he was talking on the phone.  And the Ann was taking up my time with her silly notes.

Song of the Day

**11/4/09
Pearl Jam - Army Reserve
--------------What glorious and strange wonders befell me in my music world today! The tone of this post is going to be rather bipolar, and you'll definitely understand with the information I have to share.

First of all - got my Brand New ticket! They'll be coming through Charlotte this coming Monday with Thrice and Crime in Stereo. Too bad I'm poor and can't see them with Glassjaw in New York. But still - I'm definitely not embarassed to geek out about this show.

Second of all - and here's the bad news - due to a family circumstance beyond their control, Dashboard Confessional have cancelled the remainder of their fall tour. I'm sadder than a hipster who spilled java on their Moleskine (oh, wait...that was me).

I was given a list of bands to look through, and if I have to hear another jam or ambient electronica band, I'm pretty confident I'll turn into a robot. Therefore, I turned to a group that takes me back to, well, the first PJ album I ever bought, their self-titled 2006 album with the Avacado against a deep blue background.

"Army Reserve" was never hyped like the not-so-fantastic anti-establishment "World Wide Suicide," but it's got a haunting attitude towards what is service and sacrifice. Vedder's unmistakable straining voice against spooky guitars...the "Jeremy" effect that I'm looking for today.

Nicky & Claire's Twycross Zoo Adventure

Here's some pictures of when I went to Twycross Zoo with Claire on Saturday:

A chillaxing monkey

A prairie cat smelling for danger

Some capybara, the world's largest rodent. They are like massive giant guinea pigs

3 chimps investigating something

A very important looking lemur

A gorilla who was running around with a crate on his back to keep off the sun

A gorilla who was picking his nose and eating it

Elephantantes

Flamingoes, which actually look evil in real life, not pretty and dopey like you think they are

Chilly chinchillas

2 giraffes. The barrier for the side of the enclosure is not as far away from the cage as the giraffes neck is long. Cue terrified children getting a face full of giraffe face.

Kookaburra sits on the old gum treeeeeee......

An organ utan who was bored waiting for her baby to wake up

Oh and I just got myself wildhearts tickets. Rawr!

Also I'm going to see Pearl Jam and Muse!

Aaand I'm chuffed Faith No More have been confirmed for Reading. Spot on.

Black

So, I am in Pearl Jam mode right now. But they are one band I listen to most ot the time anyway. Here is one of my favorite songs. It's such an amazing song. I haven't listened to 'Ten' in a few months, but this morning I put it on and as usual was blown away by Eddie's voice and the lyrics. "Black" is one song that I get tears everytime I listen to it.

Black

By Pearl Jam

Hey...oooh...
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
Im surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
Im spinning, oh, Im spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything (note the lack of question mark)
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all Ill ever be...yeah...

Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...
I know someday youll have a beautiful life, I know youll be a star
In somebody elses sky, but why
Why, why cant it be, why cant it be mine

I especially cry at the end 'I know you'll be a star'. I always think of Andrew Wood. I know probably none of you know who he is. He was the lead singer of a band that 2 members were in with him. He died of a Heroin Overdose in 1990. Here is a picture of the lovely man. Look up the band "MOTHER LOVE BONE". Amazing band. As much as I loved Kurt Cobain. I was in shock when Andrew died.

And I was looking at some pictures of Pearl Jam and came to a scary conclusion. lol I had the biggest crush on Jeff. Here he is.

And now my current crush (well, maybe more than a crush lol)

In the early years of PJ, Jeff always wore a hat. I know random...but I thought it was a little odd and it might be my allergy and migraine meds working. :)

Back on the PJ song that I love if none of you have heard of it here are a couple versions. One is the original PJ version and a cover by Staind. The PJ will always be number 1 in my book, but the Staind version is pretty damn good.

Liam Finn to Open for Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)

New Zealand singer/songwriter Liam Finn has announced that he will open for several Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) solo concerts from August 1 thru 22.  Mr Finn, who recently released his I'll Be Lightning cd, will then head out on his first North American solo headlining tour September 4 in New York City until October 10 in Providence, RI.   Finn is the son of Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House).  Finn & Finn have worked together, having collaborated on a cover of The Beatles' tune "Two of Us" for the "I Am Sam" film soundtrack, which also contained a track by Vedder, the frontman of Pearl Jam.   Finn's regular collaborator Eliza-Jane Barnes will accompany him on the tour as will special guests, The Veils.  Finn is known for excellent one-man performances, so this should be an exciting tour.

THE WHO Rocks VH1 Honors Event

Los Angeles, CA rocked on Saturday night (July 12) with some of the biggest names in rock and rock saluting The Who with performances during a taping of VH1's Rock Honors at the Pauley Pavilion (the show airs on July 17), but the best vibes were delivered by the honorees themselves.  The Who, which now currently comprises surviving original members Pete Townsend and Roger Daltry

Guess The Lyrics

Hola, I was tagged by williamxo. So, you probably know the thing, you have to guess what song I wrote down. I'll write the first sentence or so of every song.

1. Freezin, rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again.
2. Let me know that I've done wrong, when I've know this all along.
3. I got no regret right now (I'm feeling this)
4. A cloud hangs over, it's a city by the sea.
5. There's a part of me you'll never know, the only thing I'll never show
6.
Too alarming now to talk about. Take your pictures down and shake it out.
7. Today's the Macy's Day Parade.
8. It´s funny how we´ve seem to make it, funny how we can even walk up straight.
9. Picture yourself in a boat on a river.
10. Soft light, total silence, so tired to take the table near the door.

Whew. Pretty easy.

Woah, one of my pictures has been featured. :|

Pearl Jam Mixes Rarities, Hits, Politics At Bonnaroo

Pearl Jam capped its headlining slot Saturday at Bonnaroo with an impassioned rendering of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," with frontman Eddie Vedder urging the sprawling throng to vote for change this coming November.

"There's a time and place for this kind of talk, right?," he said late in the show, noting that music alone can't change the world, only people like those in front of him can. "It is welded into the Constitution that people have not only the right, but the responsibility to make change. It can't get any worse. We're right here in the middle of America. We can change the whole world. Do you agree that this is the time and place for this kind of talk?" The crowd roared its approval.

Not long after reaching its scheduled finish time of 12:15 a.m., without hesitation Vedder and company pressed on with the Victoria Williams-penned fan fave "Crazy Mary," and others, before eventually forking over the mega-hit "Alive."

If the previous night saw fellow headliners Metallica sticking to its vintage, pre-1992 material, Pearl Jam toured its catalog and then some. The band wowed fans with a fiery take on the Who's "Love, Reign o'er Me," and during "Daughter" Vedder even threw in a portion of the English Beat's "Save It for Later." The outtake "All Night" was played for the first time ever, while "W.M.A." made its first complete live appearance in 13 years.

Pearl Jam's appearance at Bonnaroo marked just its second U.S. festival date since nine fans were crushed to death during its 2000 set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival. Without specifically mentioning the event, Vedder referred to the tragedy when expressing his awe at how so many people could come together peacefully. "There was a time when we thought we'd never play a show like this again -- and for good reason," he said. "[Bonnaroo] makes you realize how it could actually work. And on top of that it's a great f*ckin' night."

;
With Pearl Jam having just begun a short U.S. tour that was built around Bonnaroo, Vedder expressed shock at picking up the daily newspapers in each city and finding little to no media coverage of the war in Iraq.

He later dedicated the song "No More" to friend Tomas Young, the paralyzed Iraq War vet featured in the new film "Body of War." Amid the war continuing, Young's health has taken a turn for the worse in the past couple of weeks, and Vedder admitted that has made it "a lot harder to be happy" these days.

But the band still drew and sustained one of the biggest main-stage crowds ever seen at Bonnaroo, the masses stretching well beyond those who showed up to see Metallica the night before. Even Vedder was a bit awed by the size. In between songs, when he glimpsed just how far back the crowd extended, he thanked the audience a second time for listening.
