I have to admit it's been a while since I've shopped in a place where you can pick and choose between varieties of produce. Also ... it's pretty common to come out of the supermarket and see homeless folks digging the flawed produce out of the dumpster behind the store. Isn't that bizarre? To me it's proof that capitalism has failed. Sellers are so sure that no-one with money will buy a flawed tomato that they chuck them in the garbage. They also know damn well that poorer people will try and get value out of that garbage and take what they can. So why force them to go through the indignity of picking through garbage?? Because capitalism forbids giving stuff away for free. Meanwhile people of all income levels come to farmers markets and pay a few cents more for imperfect produce!

Yes you're right - it's degrading and unnecessary . If the supermarkets are going to discard some produce just because it's not perfectly shaped why not just donate it to homeless/ deprived people who need it.

That last line says it ALL!! It would be funny, if it weren't so sad.

We're a little more humane here the supermarkets donate leftover food to the food bank that was started by singer Harry Chapin...It's called Island Harvest, they come with trucks and pick up any expired produce, meat, dairy and bread items......... It's so stupid to just throw it in the dumpsters why not just leave it in a box so they can take what they want. I never saw those Zebra tomatoes they look good : )

you know what's weird? there used to be a food bank around the hood, but last year they closed it down! not sure why - funding probably. and there aren't that many places to go and get cheap produce without having to pay bus fare as well. but there are also lots of decent food services around, taking donations from more enlightened retailers.

those tomatoes look so delicious. mama.

i dunno, in the la area, we have some great food programs; many families have options for getting either groceries or cooked meals. on the other hand, i have a friend who dropped out of mainstream society to join the homeless scene, and he's happy as a lark picking through dumpsters for food. he would never consider going to a food bank, though he does go to church food nights once in a while.
yeah, a person can do alright like that around here too ... their days become routines of cruising around to all the food services, standing in like, trading with friends, etc etc ...

It is bizarre (the bad kind of bizarre, not the good bizarreland-kind of bizarre).

In my French class we were discussing an article on the fact that dumpster diving is becoming more popular (in France). Even people who can afford buying at regular stores do it because they think it's a shame that edible food is thrown away because they need the room in the shelves of stores.

you are what you eat -- frankly, i'd rather eat with people that are ok with imperfections.
