"It's a little bit of alternative, a little bit of pop, a little bit of rock," he told MTV News this week. "I basically stepped outside of my comfort zone and I came up with something that I can honestly say is for everyone.

July 25, 2009Song Battles Part 2, Steph's Edition
Part 1 was fun. now this is more fully loaded and funner [by all means it's a word]. 1st up:
Ne-Yo vs. Kelly Clarkson: "Because of You" and "Miss Independent"
ahh, Ne-Yo. a repeat offender. or maybe he's just a huge Kelly fan? that's cool. but hey, as a songwriter, you should at least try to come up with some original titles. _________________________________________________________________________________
Stereos vs. LFO - "Summer Girl" vs. "Summer Girls"
i honestly cannot stand Stereos. although they're Canadian (and i fully support Canadian bands), they sound like a weird mix of Metro Station and heavily Auto-Tuned rap. but at least a straightforward song about a summer fling is way better than having to hear a song about Chinese food making you sick.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________ Prince vs. Tay Zonday - "Purple Rain" vs. "Chocolate Rain"
Prince (or , or whatever you like to call him) is one of the most influential black artists in rock and roll. Tay Zonday is one of the most influential black artists on Youtube. both songs deal with similar themes. although, with all respect to Prince, i've gotta give it to the underdog Tay cause his song is ridiculously catchy.
__________________________________________________________________________________________ The Script vs. Chris Brown - "Talk You Down" vs. "Take You Down"
The title of my fave Irish lads' song suggests verbal abuse. Chris', on the other hand, suggests physical abuse [coincidental much?]. Which one do you think is more appropriate? ___________________________________________________________________________________________
The Fray vs. 3OH!3 - "Trust Me" vs. "Don't Trust Me"
I've got one thing to say to you: Which band would you tell your deepest secret and feel trusted? (hint: possibly not 3OH!3) ________________________________________________________________________________________
Pat Benatar vs. Jordin Sparks - "Love Is A Battlefield" vs. "Battlefield"
Jordin says that Pat is one of her greatest influences. This is evidence. so everyone, part 2 is now finito! don't worry, I have more in store for you next time. until then, comment on these Song Battles!

January 6, 2009(KTRS) Pop Rocks: Independent Women
Readers, I apologize for the whining that took place yesterday. Remind me not to let myself get that hungry. Low blood sugar is nobody's friend. Moving on.
Today, I'd like to discuss the recent mini-trend of songs in praise of independent women. Usually, when someone writes a song about being a strong woman, said song is being sung by lesbian...or Beyonce. I've got nothing against lesbians or Beyonce, but what about the guys? Are they all just looking for unchallenging blow-up dolls? Silicone trophy wives? Dick cozies? Is there a market for someone with a job, a brain, and a life of her own? Actually, yes. 101 The Beat Jamz is slowly becoming my new radio station of choice for when I don't feel like digging my iPod out of my purse just to run to the store. I just can't take regular pop radio anymore. Yeah, you get Katy Perry (I'm neutral to her music, but interviews suggest that she and I would get along really well) but you also have to sit through the odd Buckcherry power ballad. In the interest of not taking a machete to my car stereo, I decide to listen to Beyonce and Lil Wayne. At any rate, Lil Webbie and Ne-Yo have both come up with strangely similar songs in praise of independent women. I appreciate them for this, and it makes me happy that somebody somewhere is avoiding the "I'm In Love With A Stripper" song template. Exhibit A: Lil' Webbie + Lil Boosie - "Independent" (I apologize in advance for the 15 seconds of annoying Dance Dance Revolution music in front of this, but the youTube pickin's were a little slim.) Exhibit B: Ne-Yo - "Miss Independent" Oldie but goodie: Kelly Clarkson - "Miss Independent" Charming ditty about the feeling one gets when one knows one is totally screwed (aka in love). Did you see the article where Clarkson was talking about dudes being afraid to date her because she might write a mean song about them? Excellent.

September 2, 2008Fall Out Boy to Collaborate with Ne-Yo?
Hiphop hitmaker Ne-Yo has worked with R and B royalty like Rihanna and Beyonce, but now he's setting his sights elsewhere: Fall Out Boy.
![]() In an interview with BBC News, Ne-Yo revealed that he'd like to work with the Chicago rockers at some point in the future. "Yeah, I thought about [working with Coldplay] but Kanye and Jay-Z have done it already, so I don't wanna seem like I'm bandwaggoning. I have been talking to Fall Out Boy about doing some stuff, but who knows?" Hate to break it to you, Ne-Yo, but the four guys from Fall Out Boy aren't exactly n00bs when it comes to collaborating with hip hop stars. In fact, both Kanye and Jay-Z have worked with FOB, Kanye remixed their hit single "This Ain't a Scene (It's an Arms Race)" and Jay-Z appears on the opening track to their 2007 album Infinity on High. Add to that their work with Timbaland and the recent talk that they'll be collaborating with T.I. and it becomes clear that Fall Out Boy is dedicated to continuing the tradition of rap and rock working together. Which is not to say that a Fall Out Boy/Ne-Yo collaboration wouldn't be awesome. What do you think it would sound like?
