THIS IS NOT A HAPPY STORY !!!!
When I was driving home on tuesday evening as I was coming up to the block that I turn on to get to my house off of Main Street I came upon this accident. Main Street was closed off to traffic and I could see many vehicles with lights flashing all over the place. My first thought was one of the restaurants may of had a fire but sadly I found out later on the news that this beautiful 11 year old girl was hit and killed by a hit and run driver. I heard a helicopter go over very low after I got home so then I figured that it may have been an accident. Many times they land the helicopters right in the road or one of the parking lots to medi-vac the victim to the big hospital a couple of miles away that has a great trauma unit. We have a hospital right in my town but Stony Brook Hospital has a very good unit and it takes them just a few minutes to get there by helicopter.
The accident happened a few minutes after 7pm on tuesday and I was there at about 7:15pm. The SUV that plowed into her as she was leaving a music store where her brother was taking his weekly lesson was also with her mother. They just started to cross the street when this SUV going at a high rate of speed hit her so hard that she was thrown up in the air and traveled over 300 feet and became wedged under a parked car. There was little doubt that she was killed instantly. This person who hit her just kept going and was seen by others cutting people off, tailgating and driving aggressively. Well they did find out who it was and as it turns out it was a 20 year old girl from Stony Brook [where all my photos of the harbor and village center are from] she also had a guy in the SUV with her. I don't know if she had been drinking or doing drugs but she's been arrested and more to come on that later.
The thing that makes this even worse is less than 24 hours later a teenage boy was hit and killed by a car only a short distance away in my town. And another teen from our neighboring school district was killed in a car accident in upstate NY. And still another young guy 21 from Long Island was killed upstate NY in another car accident. I'm sorry I haven't been on here much since wednesday but I couldn't sleep for many nights just seeing that one accident not knowing what happened and then finding out later !!! It's been a very upsetting time for my community. I hope Courtney is at Peace now and that her family can find some peace also ~
