DEEPWELLS FARM circa 1845
This is called a WIDOW WALK, it was common to see these little rooms on top of houses in the 18th and 19th centuries. Long Island was a Seafaring Region having water surrounding the whole island. There were many ships that would come into ports and my town was one of the main areas that they could be seen. Why these little rooms were constructed was for the wives of the mariners [sailors, fishermen] to watch for the ships returning to port. Many never did return and that is why they were named Widow Walks. Sometimes for years the wives would still hope their men would return and go up there frequently to look out. I did go up inside it but because of development and tree growth you can't really see the water very well anymore ~

It would look so much better with some aluminum siding.

No haunted house is complete without one.

HaHa...It's in need of a painting again, that's whats bad about wood siding it is very hard to maintain but they have to use what was used when it was built in 1845 : ]
I'm not sure if they let people up there anymore I was up there before they restored it....It does have quite a bit of history alot of famous people visited there : ]

I've seen houses with widow walks at the shore. I didn't know what they were until my mother-in-law told me. It made me sad.
