Daily Music Dose: Linkin Park

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California, formed in 1996. Since their formation, the band has sold more than 50 million albums and won two Grammy Awards. It achieved mainstream success with its debut album, Hybrid Theory, and its following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200's album charts in 2003. The band then explored other genres in their third studio album, Minutes to Midnight in 2007. The album topped the Billboard charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year.

Linkin Park was originally formed by Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson and Rob Bourdon, who were friends in high school. After graduating, they began to take their musical interests more seriously and recruited Joe Hahn, Dave "Phoenix" Farell, and Mark Wakefield to perform in their band, Xero However, the failure in landing a record deal and stalemate in progress prompted Wakefield, Xero's vocalist to leave the band in search of other projects and Farell, who left to tour with Tasty Snax and other bands.

Xero then recruited Chester Bennington, who was referred to the band by Jeff Blue, the vice president of Zomba music. The band then changed its name from Xero to Hybrid Theory and then again changed its name from Hybrid Theory to Linkin Park, a play on and homage to Santa Monica's Lincoln Park. As the band was still struggling to land a record deal even after several rejections, they turned to Jeff Blue, who was now the vice president of Warner Bros. records for additional help. They managed sign a deal with the company in 1999 and later released their breakthrough album, Hybrid Theory, in 2000.

Hybrid Theory was well received and after having sold more than 4.8 million copies during 2000, it earned the status of best- selling album in 2001. Singles such as Crawling and One Step Closer established themselves as staples among radio playlists during the year. The album was also nominated for three Grammy Awards and MTV awarded the band their Best Rock Video and Best Direction awards for In the End. Through these, Hybrid Theory's success had catapulted the band into the mainstream's attention.

Following the success of their debut album, Linkin Park toured around the United States before working on new material for their second studio album, Meteora, having been inspired by the rocky region of Meteora in Greece. Meteora debuted on March 25, 2003 and instantly earned worldwide recognition, going to number 1 in the US and UK, and number 2 in Australia. It sold more than 800,000 during its first week and music videos for the album's singles, received significant radio attention. Although it was not as nearly successful as Hybrid Theory, it was the third best selling album in America during 2003.

After Meteora, the band continued to tour and work on many side projects such as Bennington's work with Dead by Sunrise and Shinoda's Fort Minor. They also worked with Jay-Z to produce another remix album, Collision Course, which featured intermixed lyrics and background tracks from both artists' previous albums. However, the band's relationship with Warner Bros. Records was also deteriorating rapidly on account of several trust and financial issues but they managed to negotiate a deal in December 2005. Besides these, Linkin Park also helped to raise money to benefit victims of Hurricane Charley in 2004 and later Hurricane Katrina in 2005. They also helped relief efforts for the 2004 tsunami victims by staging several charity concerts and setting an additional fund called "Music for Relief" However, their most notable event was their participation at Live 8.

The band then began to work on new material in 2006, working with producer, Rick Rubin. The album was initially going to debut sometime in 2006 but was delayed till 2007. Warner Bros. Records then announced that their third studio album, Minutes to Midnight, a reference to the Doomsday Clock, would be released on May 15, 2007. It sold over 600,000 copies in its first week and also took the top spot on the Billboard Charts. The album's first single, What I've Done, became the top ranked song on the Billboard's charts. It was also used in the soundtrack for the film, Transformers.

During the band's tours and live shows, Bennington had stated that they plan to release a follow- up album to Minutes to Midnight but will first embark on a US tour to gather inspiration. In October 2008, Shinoda revealed that he, Phoenix and Hahn had begun working on two song ideas, with studio recordings to begin soon. Bennington had also stated that the fourth album would be a concept album. In May 2009, they announced that work has begun for their fourth studio album, which will be released in 2010, with the aim to be "genre- busting". It was also stated that Rick Rubin will be the producer of the new album and that it would have a bigger "thread of consistency" compared to Minutes to Midnight

Message from Ryan: European tour

Hotel Lobby - Leipzig, Germany, 6:50am

This is by far the best tour I have ever been on. Not just because were in Europe (been there, done that) - it’s because we actually have TIME on this tour to enjoy Europe. We’re not playing every day, so that allows us a few days at a time to explore and possibly get in to trouble. We have actually been able to go out and eat, shop, and meet people (Amir and I met up w Lars Ulrich while shopping at Liberty in London – pretty awesome if you ask me!!). Very unusual for a world tour – you usually need to work so much because it’s SO expensive, you have to cram TONS into a 2 week period.

Despite my latest Tweets (about the lack of sleep) - we are having fun. Lots of fun. Well – with the lost luggage/instruments exception! The shows have been amazing, the best so far was last night in Graefenehaichin,Germany. Amazing venue – on the beach of some huge lake, surrounded by massive, ancient machines that can only be described as... Well.. They looked like huge Transformers! They were as big as buildings. I have no idea what they really were, but they were all lit up at night with primary colors. Unreal. Because we played in Germany 2 nights before, the fans REALLY got it quickly. Like I said previously – German LP fans RULE.

Huge crowd the night before in the UK (Sonisphere). BY far - the biggest stage I have ever played on. Really fun after party.. Let’s just say thousands of camping fans, bands, press, industry peeps – partying out in the English countryside after a massive festival till the next morning. Really fun. While partying out in the middle of the fucking forest, I realized that the huge castle-like structure behind me (WTF??) was the house they used forWayne Manor in The Dark Knight. Fucking cool, right??

Linkin Park has been nothing but COOL to us. These guys are in such a huge band – they don’t really need to give a shit about anyone – but are instead they are some of the best friends you could ever have. They’ve really been going out of their way to make us feel like they want us out here with them, and that they think what we are doing is amazing. Definitely makes you feel good when walking onstage – to know that they are cheering you on from the side. I’ve really been enjoying watching their shows out here – the fans react a bit differently in Europe – it kind of makes it a new experience for us.

At this point I am not capable of sleeping linger than 5 hours at a time. Kind of feels like I am in the military.

I suppose I sort of am.

Next stop: Japan.

Shadow of the day.

I really hate days like these.  When I feel blah, and I want to get out but I'm too lazy to?  It's horrible.  I've been going through quite a bit lately, and the weather today does not help my mood.  I took a picture of my back view, and my front view of my house.  I was listening to a cover re-make of the song "Shadow of the day" by Boyce Avenue,  originally composed and written by Linkin Park.  & The song I thought summed up my mood and the weather. ;]  The back view is so much lighter.  There's soon going to be a huge black cloud right above my house.  Pretty neat.

Stress really makes me want to go over to the bad side, which is what else I hate about this all.  I need to get out of the house, that way I won't be thinking so much.  You should really check out the video --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgG_4Akt9vM

Who's going to Warped Tour this year?  I can't go. :[  Which sucks, No meeting Audrey once again!

How/When I Fell In Love With My Three Fav Bands.Ever.

1. My Chemical Romance

When my grandad died in 2003, I would watch tv a lot to forget about it mainly music really loud so it would block out my thoughts. MCR came on the tv a year later when it was my grandad's 1st annaversary and since then I've been hooked. I was a fan but only got into them really in September 2006. This band has seriously changed my life and helped me through some tough shit without even realizing they have.

2. Paramore

Summer 2008 was a life changing summer for more than one reason.

1. I met David and I'm so happy I did

2. I turned 15

3. Paramore came into my life properly

I was watching Kerrang! on the music channels and then Misery Business came on. I fell in love at that very moment with that band. I went and bought their record RIOT! and had it on replay for days and it never got boaring. That summer I downloaded every song of theirs, covers and all (well most of) and couldnt stop listening to them. I shyed away near September 2008 but once January 08 hit I was dragged back into the great music which is Paramore. 2007 will always be a great summer but 2008 will beat it by like 1% .

2. Panic (!) At The Disco  (shares spot with Paramore)

My sisters friend who's from america but lives here went home to the US for the summer back in 05 in like may and she was given all these list of bands to look up but she never did, my sister did instead. Panic were like 5th on the list and that was back when nobody knew who they were. So my sister got one of their demos and played it for me and I fell in love and I thought it was FOB cos back then Brendon sounded a lot like Patrick. So basically I found them through my sister in May 05. I wasnt that much of a fan back then but I did like them. Summer 07 I cant to fall in love with them and since then I've been in heaven.

I was slightly disappointed with Pretty.Odd. but its a wonderfull record all the same, but not as good as AFYCSO. When I first bought their first record I sat at my computer till 2am listening to the lyrics, not the music and they amazed me. Ryan Ross has a magnificent talent! Then I re-listened but this time to the instruments then again to the singing only. I'm weird like that. Finally I listened to it all in one (I just mentally blocked the other things when listening to the singing/music/lyrics individually) I was speachless.

The played at the Oxgyen (yes spelt correctly) festival in Ireland last summer...While I was on vacation on the tiny island of Mallorca. I.Wanted.To.Die. My cousin Elena went and saw them. I was so jealous but I so with they come and play Summer 2010 cos I'll be going then cos I shall be 17 :D

Random Bands I Fell In Love With :

1. The Used - July 2004

2. Linkin Park - February 2005

3. The Lost Prophets - June 2006

4. YouMeAtSix - January 2007

Bye.
