For Ruin - Last Light

Self Release

Four Irish guys meet. The first says, “Black Metal.” The second responds, “Death Metal.” The third throws in “Doom Metal” and the fourth, grinning, suggests “Heavy Metal.” All four then smile at one another, go into the rehearsal room, turn on the electricity and practice at building crossovers. This isn’t a joke, their name is For Ruin. The band’s first album was, rightly, contentious and sounded kind of like a poor man’s Amorphis. With ‘Last Light’ the band has managed to stir and to exploit its talent. This piece of polycarbonate contains magic and nothing less. The Irish play with such fathomlessly deep, doomy rhythm guitars that it’s still a little reminiscent of very old Amorphis. The distortion of the leads (‘Decline’!!!) tends noticeably towards the lead guitar sound on Paradise Lost’s monumental ‘Gothic.’ The drums have undergone a quantum leap; the playing sounds technical and supports a Florida-groove, but also boasts Black Metal-typical blast beats. And there are classical Heavy Metal twin guitars too. The quartet from Cork has retained a little of the kitsch; the artwork is still lots of cliché and has little ‘a-ha’ effect. Or how is it that a cross of thorns fits the title ‘Last Light?’ The fact that Paul McCarroll has previously done work for Primordial doesn’t even help. At least the visual experience is noticeably more tranquil than its predecessor and there are no irritating tribal sun motifs. ‘Last Light’ is forty minutes long and, as such, is in fact too short. For Ruin possess a joie de vivre; they have ideas and know how to implement them. ‘Last Light’ is the album for all of those who appreciate a cool groove as much as a couple of bars of fistbanging; for all those who like to pose to music as much as they like their Metal to be an introverted experience. Put simply, ‘Last Light’ is a success. 12/15.
