The Crow and the Butterfly [SEVEN]
I couldn’t say I was entirely surprised that a week later, Chad slapped down divorce papers in front of me. Though I wasn’t really surprised, I was still pretty hurt, though. I didn’t even get an explanation from him...not that it really needed it, though.
All he said was, “This is easier than beating the shit out of four guys, 3 of them probably not even responsible for this mess.”
I sighed and dipped my head, not even wanting to look at him. I had this coming. I should’ve known that I had this coming.
“I’m sorry,” I mumbled softly.
“If you were really sorry, you wouldn’t have done it,” Chad explained coldly. “Just sign the papers and we can settle this nicely.”
“I didn’t mean to do it,” I said softly. That, at least, was the truth. “It just sort of...well, happened, I guess.”
“Just sort of happened?” Chad’s eyebrow twitched. He threw out a harsh laugh and sucked in a deep breath, shaking his head. “Wow. That’s complete bullshit, Hayley. How does something like that just sort of happen?”
I didn’t really know how to answer that without getting yelled at. Chad was still straightedge, so drinking to him was out of the question. But, I had already spilled the beans that this whole thing wasn’t entirely intentional.
“We were drunk,” I admitted finally. “Like I said, it just sort of happened. Neither one of us were in control.”
“So, uh, who exactly is the other person in this ‘we’?” Chad asked, narrowing both of his eyes at me.
I bit down on my lip, not sure if I should tell him or not. Though, the secret was out. There wasn’t much that I could do.
“Josh,” I admitted with a soft sighed, glancing up at him. I watched as a dark shadow crossed over his face; he had always hated Josh, simply because Josh had always loved me. Then, he started laughing. It was more like cackling, but still. He finally stopped when his face turned red, and sucked in several deep breaths of air before he finally narrowed his eyes at me.
“I should’ve known. Josh,” he said, rolling his eyes slightly. “But you know, Hayley. I might’ve understood if you had just come out and admitted it. Not lied about it and wasted my time,” he snapped. “Now, just pack your shit and get out of here.”
Chad stood up, and then headed for the front door. He unlocked it and then exited the house, slamming the door behind him. Through the window I saw him head over to his car and climb in, and I continued to watch until he sped off down the street. I sighed and ran my hand through my hair, closing my eyes.
Now, my baby didn’t even have a fake father to take care of it. And I knew that I certainly couldn’t do this alone. As much as I knew I wouldn’t be welcomed back, I knew I had to go back to Franklin right away.
Almost five hours later, I was standing the Nashville International Airport with my cell phone pressed up against my ear, desperately trying to reach Jeremy Davis. I was a little scared to face Josh and the rest of the band right away; I figured Jeremy would be the one least mad about it, simply because he was closest to me.
After several rings, Jeremy’s voice came through the other end. “Look, Hayley, if you’re here to apologize to Josh-“
”No, Jeremy,” I quickly cut him off. Though I knew I had to apologize to Josh, that wasn’t the first reason why I was calling him. Still, I noticed one thing through the other end of the phone; Jeremy sounded pretty exhausted.
“Look, I’m back in Nashville,” I explained quietly, for fear of any of my paparazzi stalkers showing up from off of the plane. “Though I am going to apologize to Josh later, I just really need your help right now. I’m at the airport. Can you come pick me up?”
“I’ll be there in 20.”
The line went dead and I sighed, dragging my luggage to a metal set of chairs that was attached to the wall of the airport. I sat down in it and closed my eyes, a thousand emotions running through my head. I was kind of relieved to be rid of Chad, but I probably couldn’t be with the boy I loved because I had left him. Which meant I might have to raise a baby all my myself, and I’m not sure how I would like that...
I took in a deep breath, and tried to tell myself to stop worrying. This wasn’t going to be good for the baby if I didn’t chill out for a few seconds.
After what seemed to be longer than 20 minutes, but not by much, I received a vibrating text from Jeremy saying,
‘Here. In the parking lot. Almost the same place I parked as last time. You know what my car looks like.’
I sighed and grabbed my luggage the best I could, and rolled it out of the sliding doors and towards the visitors parking lot. I had some trouble getting there, since I had packed basically everything that was mine. Everything else that was mine that I had at the house I had shipped to an old apartment that I had in LA that I used for work days if I was recording or something like that. But I had brought just about everything with me.
When I got about half way to the car, I felt a hand grab the other side of my luggage. I nearly shouted at the person who was doing it, thinking I was getting robbed, but as I saw later after the luggage was removed from the person’s face, it was just Jeremy trying to help me get my stuff to his car.
A small smile of relief spread across my face when I saw him, but I didn’t say anything to him until we got to the car. Still, then all I muttered was a brief “Thanks for getting that,” and then slid into the front seat of the car.
Jeremy got into the driver’s seat, and then put the key into the car, turning it till the engine finally started. He didn’t pull out, and then looked at me, frowning slightly. “You know, Hayley, I might be glad that you’re back, but the rest of the guys probably aren’t.”
I sighed, and hung my head. “I know. But...well, Chad just divorced me. He was a little pissed that the baby wasn’t his.”
“Well, yeah, anyone would be,” Jeremy said, and then sighed as well. “Hayley, you were stupid leaving Josh like that. You should’ve seen him after that...it...it was bad, Hayley. It was really bad.”
“What did he do?” I asked, frowning as I raised both of my eyebrows.
“Well, he literally slammed his head against the concrete wall, either trying to knock himself out or kill him. Luckily, Zac and Taylor got a hold of him before he did something really bad to himself,” he explained. “After that, he just randomly got angry, and moaned all the time about how hurt he was and sort.”
“I need to call him,” I said quickly after saying that. “I need to tell him how sorry I am. I need to meet up with him.”
“Hayley, don’t-“
”No, Jerm. This needs to be done,” I cut him off, and I noticed a small frown appear on Jeremy’s face. I sighed and pulled my phone to my ear after I had dialed Josh’s number, which I had memorized from heart.
It rang a few times, and then finally, a dead voice on the other end answered.
“What the hell do you want?”
It was a flat, unhappy down, and I instantly felt like I should’ve taken Jeremy’s advice. It seemed like Josh wasn’t willing to be the guy from the movie and melt to me.
“I-I just wanted to apologize,” I said quickly, frowning. “I’m sorry for leaving Josh. I’m sorry that I hurt you, I really shouldn’t have-“
”Yeah, you shouldn’t have done that,” Josh finished for me, darkly. “And if you’re here to try to plead to me that you’re actually sorry, and you want me to be in your’s and the baby’s life, then I don’t want any part of it. I know your bullshit.”
“But, Josh, I’m serious, I do love you!”
Though, in the middle of love, the line went dead.
I sighed and leaned my head against the back of the car seat. By then, Jeremy had begun to pull out of the airport parking lot, with nothing to say.
I would just have to try harder.
