Access 1.0 for DOS. No, it is NOT the database program you may be familiar with, but a communications software package from Microsoft that was released in the '80s. It came on 5.25" floppy disks, and required an "asynchronous communications adapter" (aka a modem) to function. This application was a method for a businessman to retrieve news and outside date at his desk or at home. It came with promotional offers and items from CompuServe, MCI Mail, NewsNet, Dow Jones News, the OAG Electronic Edition, Western Union EasyLink, and more. Before there was the Internet, this was one of the methods of obtaining information and "connecting" electronically.
Competition: ProComm, Hayes Smartcom II, Qmodem, Telix, all DOS-based.
Note: this product was not a best-seller, and Microsoft later recycled the name and used it on their database product.
