Why DO White Kids Love Hip Hop?

No, OK, calm down - it's very unusual (in fact it's the first time) that I talk about anything longer than a set of lyrics. But let's be real - just because most of us would rather watch the Star Wars marathon going on FX than pick up a book, it doesn't mean ALL of us are flying away with Harrison Ford in a Millennium Falcon.

Which brings me to Why White Kids Love Hip Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes, and the New Reality of Race in America. The brief history and influence of hip hop as told by Bakari Kitwana explores the source of hip hop magazine, The Source, takes a look at the controversy routinely surrounding the career white-boy-rapper phenomenon Eminem and how record labels find out what Cds we pull from the shelves and downloads we click on Itunes.

There's even a little foreshadowing tidbit on a certain Black Senator's influence in Illinois, and his appeal to a white demographic (take a guess...it rhymes Barack Obama). And for a book published in 2005, Kitwana presents the reader with an accurate look at who voted for whom even in the 2008 elections.
You'll like this book even if hip hop only relatively grabs your attention. Though the question of why white kids love hip hop doesn't have a straight answer, Kitwana gives the reader something to consider the next time you come across a tiny white girl blasting Get Rich or Die Tryin' from her Honda.

Bill Ortiz, Santana's Supernatural Trumpeter, Releases K-Maxx-Remixed Hip-Hop Single, Word Play Featuring Bay Area Soulstress FEMI

Url: http://www.billortiz.com/

December 4, 2009 - San Francisco, CA - Bill Ortiz, Santana's longtime Supernatural Trumpeter, who has been receiving nothing but accolades since the July release of his debut CD, From Where I Stand, announces the release of the K-Maxx-remixed Hip-Hop single, Word Play, featuring the vocal talents of FEMI. K-Maxx, aka Ken Hopkins, is a legendary San Francisco Hip-Hop recording artist, producer, also the host of KPOO FM's wildly popular new music program "Ghetto Gumbo".

As a recording artist, K-Maxx has released several popular underground CDs during the Bay Area's 'Rap Reign' in the 90'. As producer, K-Maxx has worked with other leading Bay Area Rap and Hip-Hop artists, including Tower of Power's Lenny Williams, who recently cracked the nation's Top 30 Urban AC charts, Too $hort, Andre Nickatina, and King Tech, to name only a few.

Ortiz is quick to point out, "I've been a big fan of K-Maxx for a longtime, and I love his production skills." While K-Maxx is a gifted Hip-Hop producer, he's also a gifted multi-instrumentalist, who is as proficient on a piano, guitar, and bass as he is with a mixing desk and sampler. "K-Maxx thinks like a musician," continues Ortiz, "and he comes from classic R&B background, like I do, so we share a common music vocabulary that also includes Soul and Hip-Hop. This is what makes his production style so unique."

When Ortiz discovered that K-Maxx was playing the track Word Play from debut CD, From Where I Stand, to his "Ghetto Gumbo" audience, Ortiz states, "K-Maxx is an amazing barometer and supporter of Bay Area music and musicians and it was a complete surprise and honor to receive his recognition. It wasn't long after we got in touch and put the wheels in motion for him to produce a Hip-Hop remix of Word Play."

Word Play was remixed at San Francisco's iconic Pyramind Studios, and final mixing was a done by Steve Heithecker with Bill Ortiz and K-Maxx.

The most authoritative national music industry magazine, Music Connection, states, "Contemporary jazz trumpet greats have a run for their money now that longtime Santana sideman Ortiz enters the urban jazz scene with this chillin', artsy yet infectious, easy grooving debut." Keith Hannaleck of MuzikReviews.com gives Four Stars and states, "It comes as no surprise that his solo effort From Where I Stand turns out to be first rate material." Carlos Santana states, "Bill articulates the beautiful language of jazz without losing the purity and innocence of a child. It's a wonderful experience to share music every night with him."

To receive a review copy of From Where I Stand, or the remix single, Word Play, or to see Bill Ortiz live in February 2010, when he returns to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's Joint, contact Christopher Buttner, at chris@prthatrocks.com.

New Kid On The Block Unites Hip-Hop & Rock With A Fresh Twist

Brooklyn, NY, November 17, 2009 - Brooklyn recording sensation LaKid Wise is setting a new standard for the musical genre we call "Hip-Rock", the fusion of rhythmic and poetic rap with hard, edgy and guitar-filled rock. While working on his debut album, LaKid Wise is releasing a promotional giveaway mix album titled "Enter The Movement" available for direct download on www.TheHipRockStar.com as of November 24, 2009.

"Enter The Movement" will feature original works such as "Hustler", "Breaking Down" and various renditions and tributes to classics such as the late Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" and the Beatles' "Yesterday". America's listeners have been waiting for something different to hit the airwaves. Although Hip-Rock had its years of rise with acts such as Limp Bizkit and Rage Against The Machine it has never stayed consistent with today's top charts. It is a substantial challenge to revive this genre and keep it stable but this mixtape stands as a great starting point.

"Bringing two of the most influential genres together is not going to be easy but with the support of the people, anything is possible," says LaKid Wise. "Music is universal. My work is about more than creating a unified sound. It is about sending a message."

LaKid Wise has been composing music since age eleven. Still rocking at twenty-one, he has drawn creative inspiration from the great artists we know in modern entertainment. From immigrating to New York City as a young child, interning at Roc-a-fella Records as a high-school student and releasing two independent albums in his teenage years, LaKid Wise is stepping outside of the box to redefine commercial music.

If you would like more information or to schedule an interview with LaKid Wise, please feel free to contact me directly at 347-782-5590 or email at Khaled.Ouaaz@Gmail.com
