'Star Wars' series detailed; no movie, just TV

George Lucas' upcoming Star Wars series, which spans the world between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, won't be showing up in theaters. Instead, Lucas has made a deal to run 100 $1 million episodes in the form of an ongoing television series. Do you want to see a Star Wars television show?

George Lucas is taking quite a gamble (and an expensive one, at that) by creating an ongoing series of television shows based on his Star Wars universe. This show is one of the first of its kind: it will expand on an already-existing universe, specifically one that chronologically occurs between Episode III and Episode IV.

George Lucas has also named a director for the upcoming season, which will debut in 2009:
  • According to the Liverpool Daily Post Jim Marquand has been asked by George Lucas to direct episodes of the upcoming Star Wars live action television series. Jim’s father Richard Marquand directed Return of the Jedi.
Let's hope the apple doesn't fall far from the tree; Return of the Jedi is perhaps my favorite of the original series.

What I am worried about is that Lucas is pushing for 100 episodes right off the bat:
  • ...the series will focus on the expanded universe and explore the life minor characters from the Star Wars galaxy. The project was proposed with a plan for 100 $1 million one hour-long episodes, although producer Rick McCallum explained in July 2007 that the series could run up to 400 episodes. Lucas is writing and producing the first season, which is currently set to debut in 2009.
Putting the absurd notion of 400 episodes aside, 100 episodes is, based on a 24-episode-per-season average, 4 seasons. If we use Rick McCallum's numbers, that's 16 years of one television show. After the critical and fan backlash of the prequel triolgy, what makes Lucas so sure that the show will last longer than a single season?

Even considering his past and the cult following he's gained since A New Hope premiered in 1977, Lucas has a steep climb ahead of him. We have no plot outlines, no idea which characters he'll focus on, any actors, any scripts, or any idea about the slightest details of this project. (What network bought the rights to air the show? What happened to the movie we were supposed to get?) What we do have is what seems to be an incredibly confident group of talented writers and directors who might possibly make history with this live action series.

What do you think? Are you excited for a Star Wars television show?

YES! NEED STAR WARS TV SHOW! I'M GONNA EXPLODE WITH NERD TIME! THIS IS AWESOME!!
But in all honesty, I won't know how to feel about it until it is created, but right now, I'm pretty psyched for it!! =D

while a star wars tv show sounds rather fantastic, but by 4 seasons everyone will be over it.
it would work better if he cut it down to 2 seasons.

my mind, while glad for all that is nerdy, is worried he might be killing his original glory by making so many bloody prequels!
Yes. The last three were so disappointing, I'm glad it will have a new director and that if it's crap, I will not have paid $9 to see it. Everybody wins.

Well, the clone wars cartoon was the only thing good to come of the prequils. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I'm still holding this concept at arms length until I seem some proof that it won't, well, pull a "Lucas".

Watching new Star Wars every week? I'm down!

could be fun.
I guess my question is whether or not existing characters will be featured, or if this is going to purely concentrate on characters not seen in the film universe (I'm unfamiliar with the expanded universe, so I'm not sure if anyone from the novels and/or comics would fit into this timeline). I also kind of keep my fingers crossed that Lucas himself won't be writing it.

The movies are what made Star Wars so epic.
I'm afraid a tv show won't be nearly as epic =/

i'm a tad skeptical about a tv series being made, i'm still let down slightly by the last installment movie wise, so to have a tv show spanning across them is a slightly hit or miss thing, but i suppose it will be watched when it shows here and then i'll decide if it works

I'm just worried the series will be plagued by bad actors and terrible writing again.

Oh come on, it's not like we're going to see Jessica Alba: Jedi Master.

Right?

RIGHT?!

I'll watch it simply because I am a huge Star Wars fan and by that fact alone am obligated to at least entertain the notion. Now, I am worried about the way it turn out and the story line and the actors and such...but honestly, I'm already disappointed because of the way Episode III ended. The ending was changed from the original script (or at least the way I'd always read it and heard it) and turned out the way you saw it on screen. I don't know. I'm just not sure one way or the other. I still say the original trilogy is the best...and I think Jedi is the best installment of that. Hmmm...they just don't make movies and television like they used to...so sad...
