Photographing Funeral For A Friend

Last November I spent a day with Funeral For A Friend, photographing the band behind-the-scenes exclusively for their online sites.  The photos went up last week on Funeral For A Friend's official flickr and I've just posted a small selection right here on Buzznet.

As a young, fairly unknown music photographer, being able to shoot anything other than just the first three songs of a gig is pretty amazing.  Luckily the guys in Funeral For A Friend have their own record label so can call all the shots and if an idea takes their fancy, they can run with it.  On this occasion I proposed to do a behind-the-scenes documentary on one of their UK tour dates, a kind of day-in-the-life type thing.  For some reason you rarely see these kind of photo-stories anymore, perhaps because they're not flashy and high-gloss, but photographers used to do them in the 70's for bands like The Rolling Stones and I've always found them fascinating.

In the photos there's a vague timeline from meeting the band in their dressing room around midday and hanging out for a couple of hours, heading to a signing at a record/clothes shop and then the gig itself in the evening.  One day I'd love to extend this to an entire tour so if you know a band with a spare bunk on their bus for a photographer, let me know :)

Oh and for the photography geeks out there, I shot the entire day using a Nikon FM2 SLR camera with a 50mm F1.8 lens and lots of black and white film which had to be pushed from 1600iso to 6400iso!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the photos so drop them in a note or a comment, which shot is your favourite?

IkkyG does Soundwave Festival

The day started with me catching a bus to Central in order to catch a train to Blacktown in order to catch a bus to Eastern Creek Raceway. Yeahhh....

It was raining cats, dogs and dinosaurs, so I was worried that the festival was going to be one big wet muddy bowl. Thankfully, it was just a coastal shower so it was only overcast in Eastern Creek. Although there was an awful lot of mud and one of the stages had huge trenches of dried mud x_x

We had to wait for my friend Michael's friend Kieran to come, so we waited outside the line for a while because we had his ticket. This was a fatal error as the line took like 1 1/2 hours to get through. They individually bag and ID checked everyone who entered -_-

So for the 1 1/2 I was waiting, I amused myself by crowd watching, where there was some lulzy people and awesome hair cuts. Observe epic green mohawk dude below. I also listened to Less Than Jake play in the stand next to the line. I wish I had seen them play D:

Finally me and my friends got let in, and we skedaddled our way to the metal stage to listen to the end of Unearth's set. We then stuck around and watched Evergreen Terrace play. They were decent, although kind of generic-hardcore kind of music.

I then scooted along to watch Anberlin play. They were pretty much what I expected, the songs sounded as good live as on their CD, and the lead singer sang really well, holding some pretty impressive notes.

The mosh for Anberlin was strangely rough for such a calm band, as a result all the shots I tried to take on my compact are all blurry where Ive been in the middle of taking a photo then been hit by a crowdsurfer. I have no idea why the lead singer is wearing a scarf seeing as it was like a million degrees.

After Anberlin finished playing, my mates and I sat down and rehydrated, whilst watching Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and mocking them from afar. Their music sounded a bit clusterfuck-ish because one of the guitarists seemed a bit out of time, and the lead singer had filters on his voice, which is pretty lame for a live set.

Michael and I then went and watched Funeral for a Friend, which was awesome, although the crowd were kind of douchey and for the second mosh in a row I managed to have a circle pit open right behind me and have people launching themselves over my head. -_- For this reason, I took no photos as I value my trusty olympus, and also needed to concentrate on keeping alive.

Afterwards we went and watch Lacuna coil, who played a pretty badass set. Scabbia's voice is simply amazing live, and my friend Michael who has seen Evanesence live told me that Scabbia was able to sustain notes in a way that Amy Lee simply can not. The whole band played with so much energy, and had totally badass instruments with extra strings and whatnot.

Michael, Kieran and I then met up to watch New Found Glory. None of us could be bothered to go into the crowd, seeing as none of us were fans, but they played a decent set, although I was disturbed at how everyone but us three knew all the words. -_-

Then Alkaline Trio played, who I was eagerly awaiting to see live. They were 100% awesome, although I was suprised at how normal they all looked haha, I wanted to see crazy outfits and copious amounts of makeup and hair dye. No such luck. Again, I almost broke my camera trying to take photos and got walloped by so many crowd surfers its not funny. Although I was 3 people from the front, so I got a wicked good view of the band :D

Skiba looks kind of demonic in this photo lulz.

We then ran from the Alkaline Trio set to watch 25 minutes of the Nine Inch Nails set. The NIN and AK3 sets began at the same time, but the NIN ran for longer, so we got to watch some of the end.

My Nine Inch Nails photos are trully shitteous because I was so far away and the lighting was seizure inducing -_- Tbh I didn't really get into their set because I'm not really a huge NIN fan.

I then frolicked to Lamb of God to watch the last 40 minutes of their set (because it began when AK3 ended). They were AWESOME. I felt like a rag doll, because I spent most of their set running around in the circle pit and trying not to get squished by crowdsurfers.

Then we frolicked home, hurray! It was awesome, albeit expensive, day. The tickets cost $110, and I bought two shirts which came to $75, and all the food/drinks were ridiculously overpriced x_x

An Unexpected Conversation with Matthew Davies of Funeral for a Friend

A couple of weeks ago Shane and I attended a Funeral for a Friend Concert at the Fillmore in New York City.  The experience turned into something more than just the average concert. Here’s how it went down.

We strolled up to the doors a half-hour before they opened, and a very large man stuck his arm out to block our entry.  “Line’s back there,” he growled.

I unfolded my early entry pass, and suddenly he was the epitome of graciousness. “Right this way, I’ll take you up.”

He led us up the steep stairs of  the old venue, as we passed the posters of the acts that had played there: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The White Stripes, etc.  The man took his leave of us at the top, and another man handed Shane his limited-edition poster and pointed the way into the concert hall.

Shane and I stepped onto the hard-wood floors of the room and peered around, squinting like Ozzy our hamster when she just wakes up and climbs out of her house.  There were about 30 people milling around, but no familiar “table” with the bandmembers seated behind it signing things.   Suddenly, an unassuming fellow in glasses and the most non-descript attire you can imagine--Pete Wentz doesn’t need to worry about any sartorial competition here—approached us. He stuck his hand out and said, “Hi, I’m Matthew.” (pssst. He’s the lead vocalist and frontman for FFAF.)

I was slightly taken aback, but the manners I had been taught as a kid reflexively kicked in. “Hi, I’m Renata and this is my son, Shane.”

No one said anything for what seemed like an eternity, but was probably 4 seconds.  Shane was standing there agog, so I knew it was up to me.  I decided to simply have a conversation with him as if I had just met him at a cocktail party.

“So, is this your first time in NewYork?” I asked idiotically.

Very politely, he answered, “Ah, no, no. We’ve been here many times.”

[*swoon*  Welsh accent!  Welsh accent! You know how we Americans are gaga for the accents. It doesn’t matter if the accent is English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or Australian, we love the accents. I have no explanation for it; we just do.]

Here’s the rest of the interview. (Remember, I was totally unprepared for this; hence the lameness.)

H: So, is this the beginning, middle or end of your tour?

M: We’re sort of in the middle. Tomorrow, we go to Asbury Park, New Jersey, which I’m very excited about because that’s where Bruce Springsteen is from.

H: Do you get any time off, or do you tour year round?

M: We take two weeks off a year, which we spend with our families and use to write our next album.

H: I noticed on the liner notes of your new album that members of the Lostprophets sang backing vocals on several tracks.

M: You’re right!

H: So I guess you guys are friends with the Lostprophets?

M: We’re friends with all the Welsh bands; it’s a very small country.

H: You’re all from the same town, right?  (yeah, I know, witty.)

It was at this point I decided not to overstay my welcome.  I asked Shane if he would like the band to sign his poster.   He nodded vigorously.

“Come on, lads,”  Matthew said. (Actually, he didn’t say “lads,” but I wish he had.) The rest of the band gathered around to sign Shane’s poster and take photos with him.

Since FFAF were the headliners, it was some time before they took the stage. The boys launched right into “Rules and Games” from their latest release Memory and Humanity.  Suddenly Matthew, the guy who looks like an Associate Professor of Anthropology at SUNY Albany was transformed into a rockstar.

“Newww York!!   It’s bastarrrd cold out therrre. We doon’t have THIS  kind of WEATHerrr where WEEE are fruum!”

Gotta love ‘em.

Annie*, if you’re out there, I apologize for “bastardizing” the Welsh accent.

Me: An Introduction, A Mixtape

The International Mixtape Group had a scheme going where two people had to write one another a mxtape with the theme 'Me: An Introduction'. Several months later, I have finally gotten around to making a playlist for my dear Mr Alexher123. Not only this, but I have also gotten around to uploading the whole mixtape onto the interwebz. It's not a definitive statement on my musical taste, but I think it says a bit about who I am.

I now share this gloriousness with you!

1. Hyperballad- Big Heavy Stuff.
This is a fantastic cover of the Bjork song. It's the song I turn to when I'm depressed, the raw acoustic edge to this resonating somewhere in my heart.

2. Hype (V.2.)- The Hampdens
This is a song I have fallen in love with over time. I bought it on iTunes, which means I cant share it, so I have a ripped copy of 'The Hype" from their Myspace, which is a slightly different mix of the song. V.2 is much better, but I can not find it anywhere. (If you can locate/buy v.2 srsly, DO IT).

3. Love- Smashing Pumpkins
This song is my heroin. When I first heard it, I absolutely hated it. But it has this addictive quality to it- you have to listen to it one more time. This repulsion and addiction continues until you fall in love.

4.Forever Gone, Forever You- Evanesence
On second thought, I should have added a different one of their songs, but oh well. Amy Lee's voice is beautiful, and I like the synth stuff in their early demo stuff.

5. Stockholm Syndrome- Blink 182
This song speaks to me emotionally in a way I would have hardly thought Blink capable of. I will admit, its a crappy song in the whole scheme of music. But its firmly engrained itself in who I am, its a song that I was able to curl up within and have a few minutes of sanity listening to.

6.Hearts Burst Into Fire- Bullet for my Valentine
When I fall in love, this is how I want it to be. Power Metal included.

7. Hail Destroyer- Cancer Bats
I feel 98.4534264% more badass than I really am when I listen to this song. TRUFAX. If this song is too hardcore for you, it's time to man up. If its not hardcore enough, I salute you.

8. Train In Vain- The Clash
The first evar Clash song I ever heard. The rest, as they say, is history.

9.Bordering On Ordinary- The Dear & Departed
This is another song I did not immediately like, but felt mysteriously drawn to. There is a suss key change mid way through, and I'm not sure it really works, but ok, whatever. I sometimes feel like I border on ordinary, just like I border on whether I like this song. It's a pretty good analogy really.

10. Girl Anachronism- The Dresden Dolls
This song is for those days when life is a glorious mess.

11. You Want Romance?- Funeral For A Friend
This is one of my favourite songs, (hey some of you might have guessed, y/fy?). Again, thanks to those iTunes peeps and their encryption shite I can't share it either. Its here on iMeem if you want to listen though.

12.Why Do You Love Me- Garbage
I can't understand what would possess any man into the madness that would be falling in love with me. Also, Shirley Manson is awesome. 'nuff said.

13. Where the City Meets the Sea- The Getaway Plan
This song fills me with hope. Also the lead singer is very pretty, although his mouth is disproportionately large. I suspect this contributes to his awesome voice.

14.Miss Take- The HorrorPops
I'm a girl, I make mistakes, and thats ok.

15. Lady Madeline In Her Coffin- I Am Ghost
This song is so dodgy in terms of recording quality, but it has a really interesting dynamic to it. You'll see what I mean.

16. Imagine- John Lennon
Because I'm lame and I believe in world peace? This song is classic, timeless, genius.

17. The Shake- Kisschasy
This song evokes all sorts of crazy emotions in me, especially the crescendo towards the end. Ghostly and passionate. It's a good combination.

18. Wake Up- The Living End
Rockabilly with a political edge, it works. One of their best songs.

19. Spike- The Network
This song gives me the lulz, you should watch the video clip for it on Youtube. Funniest thing ever.
I R PUNK WHEN I LISTEN TO THIS SONG

20. Anasasis (Xenophontis)- Parkway Drive
Parkway Drive is one of those bands that takes a bit of effort to get into, but its worth it. Really. I don't even hear the screaming any more haha. Parkway Drive are huge on the Aussie hardcore scene, and I have awesome memories seeing them live, such as breaking a friend of mine's tooth in the moshpit. ;-0 I am teh badass.

21. Avarice- Disturbed
I really like this song. It gives me pleasing memories of a shirtless Stuart Townsend in Queen of the Damned. It sort of has this hypnotic feel to it.

22. Seein' Diamonds- Hot Water Music
A nice way to end the Mix. Everytime I hear it, my heart has this huge pang of emotion. It's emotive and raw and everything music should be.

Now children. I would never ever condone the illegal distribution of music. Never. If however, you are sufficiently lacking in morals, it can be found here on YouWantRomance's sendspace. Like, totally by coincidence.
