Our medieval watermill ---- An account of the modernization of a self catering holiday cottage deep in Limousin, France.

Can I now tell the chronicle of an ancient mill which has become a holiday retreat deep in the Creuse countryside. Here we have one of a number of items describing the mill and portraying the area of Le Moulin de Pont de Chez Lord, France 23430.
When the watermill was built the Limousin part of central France was controlled by English forces. The mill was constructed in around the year 1277 and the local commander of the garrison lived in a house alongside a bridge over the river Beraude. Since he was a member of the English gentry the bridge became recognized as Le Pont de Chez Lord which means literally ---- The Bridge by the House of the Lord. Le Moulin de Chez Lord (which means The Mill of the House of the Lord) was built close to the residence of the English milord. It was necessary to grind the flour to bake bread to feed the troops and also to prepare the oats for the horses. It is easy to forget that the potato did not exist in France until the middle of the 15th century. Thus the building of the water mill was very much earlier than the arrival in Europe of the potato and bread was was on every table. The mill had been in operation for 300 years before the potato was imported from Peru and slowly became a part of the European diet. This is the reason for any permanent occupying force it was vital to have a reliable supply of flour. To get the time when the watermill was first operated into perspective we should explain that it was the 13th century, the time of Richard the Lionheart, who became King of England and Aquitaine the other side of Bordeaux in 1189. So the water mill was constructed in the period of the crusades and Maid Marion in England. The involvement of King Richard and his connection to the area will be reviewed in another article. In western Europe this was the epoch of the start to The Little Ice Age. The Thames in Londres froze over on some occasions and the Scandinavians withdraw from their settlements in Iceland as the polar ice crept south. The sun was less active and the Earth responded with the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries ending in the mid 1850s. Crops regularly failed throughout this period ... so much for NOW being a time of specific climatic changes. Throughout Europe the temperature was some 2 degrees lower than the current average so here at the water mill in winter it was worse and no doubt damper than at the moment which gives me sympathy for former owners. The mill was working until the 1980s when it prepared cattle meal. The mill has now been converted into a holiday cottage in the region of France called the Limousin. Now traveling eastwards you come to the Massive Central which is a mountainous region now famous for winter sports. If we now look towards the west a short trip takes you to Limoges, celebrated for its porcelain manufacture and traveling further the beautiful city of La Rochelle the largest seaside resort in the Bay of Biscay. This very interesting place is now also a holiday resort and an important center for yachting. This region called the Limousin is a new one on the tourist map as it was until recently a mainly French holiday area however the secret is now out. It is an area of forests, hills and valleys with many beautiful small villages resting in the valleys. The region contains hundreds of rivers in the many valleys which gives for superb views. Most rural sports are easily available. Particularly important among these are the delightful bike rides of every degree of difficulty so suiting all capacities and levels of zeal. The historic mill is 700 years of age, and was made to mill wheat flour for English forces who were stationed in this part of France to maintain the English commercial interests based around Bordeaux. The watermill is sitting in a valley and includes 10 hectares of pasture and woods. The watermill lies down a long road which provides tranquility. The river Beraude and the mill stream almost encircle the mill and only a few yards from the house is a waterfall which was the overflow for the mill pool. The river runs through the property and encloses a little island with several large trees that is wonderful for relaxing on those very hot days because there always is a wind from the river. We also often have picnics and barbecues there on warm summer evenings. The upstairs part of the mill has now been transformed into two double bedrooms en suite and the downstairs into a living area with kitchen, lounge etc. There is a shaded area by the waterfall which is perfect for al fresco eating or for having a glass of wine on warm days. Because my wife and I are lucky enough to reside in the center of this very historic area and in the wonderful countryside, we would like in the future to give you articles in which we will further look at the region and depict the abundant attractions of the area. Vivre sa vie

Texto sobre o filme Vivre sa vie (Viver a Vida) de Godard.
"I can say how I picture Godard. He's a man who works a lot, so he is, necessarily, completely alone. But this is not just any solitude, it's an extraordinarily populus solitude, populated not by dreams, fantasies, or projects, but by actions, things, and even people. A multiple, creative solitude." |
