INTERVIEW W/ STAR
HI! I'M CYNTHIA FROM TASTE IT T.V. BRINGING YOU NEW MUSIC FROM "STAR". THIS IS AN ONLNE WRITTEN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BAND AND THEIR GROOVY ALBUM "DEVASTATOR"!!
LET'S DISH!
FIRST QUESTION. WHAT ARE THE BAND MEMBER'S NAMES AND WHAT DO YOU PLAY RESPECTIVELY?
Theodore Beck (bass, beats)
Scott Cortez (guitars)
Shannon Roberts(vocals, lyrics)
HOW LONG HAVE YOU ALL BEEN A BAND AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
(SR) - We are from Chicago and have been together since 2005.
DID YOU KNOW EACH OTHER BEFORE THE BAND?
(SR) - Yes, we were all friends before be formed STAR. I went to school with Ted and we worked together with Scott.
WHO ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS MUSICALLY? (PAST AND PRESENT)
(All) - Matthew Smith of Outrageous Cherry, Sonic Youth…artists who are not afraid to try new things and are always doing something worth listening to. People who annoy us can be inspiring too. We like to write beautiful songs about evil people.
*LAUGHS* SO DO I! EVERY NOW AND THEN I WRITE A SONG ABOUT AN EVIL PERSON...OR TWO.
DOES THE TITLE "DEVASTATOR" MEAN MORE TO THIS ALBUM THAN THE LITERAL MEANING?
(TB) - It's hard explaining meanings, we hope it means different things to different people, it means different things to us sometimes.
LYRICALLY CAN YOU BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT THE SONGS AND MUSICAL PROGRESSIONS ON THIS EP?
(SR) - I think it deals a lot with trying to triumph over the things that bring you down, with fighting and making up. It's the roller coaster we were on at that period in time.
WHAT GENRE WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AND WHY? I'D SAY YOU HAVE SOMETHING VERY INTERESTING ABOUT YOUR STYLE… EXPRESSIONATE AND INTRICATE.
(ALL) - We like to just call ourselves a rock band. An indie rock band I guess because we are so DIY.
(TB) - With poppy tendencies!
ANY NEW TOURS PLANNED THIS UPCOMING YEAR?
(SR) - Hopefully we will start to leave the Midwest more this year. We're homebodies!!
GET OUT THERE SHANNON! THE WORLD NEEDS A DOSE OF YOUR MUSICAL MEDICINE!
OKAY, ENOUGH OF THE SERIOUS QUESTIONS TIME TO REALLY GET TO KNOW STUFF! *SMILES* LET'S SEE...I ANSWER SOME TOO, SO NO WORRIES! I'M IN TROUBLE TOO! *LAUGHS*
WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED AT A CONCERT YOU PERFORMED IN?
(SR) - A band we played with in Milwaukee was using sheet metal as an instrument. Crashing the metal into the metal they'd laid out on the floor. There was a drum sound so loud it was as if your brain had exploded going on as well. It was as if the club was being demolished by the sound. People were booing them, there was a fight with much screaming and they got thrown out. I felt bad for them.
IF YOU WERE LET LOOSE IN A THEME PARK…WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
I WOULD SAY "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS" BECAUSE I WORKED ON THE "JAWS" RIDE IN FLORIDA AS A SPIELER AKA: "SKIPPER". *SMILES* PLUS "ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE" HAS A "MARVEL SUPER HERO ISLAND"! I'M A NERD. *LAUGHS* YOUR TURN!
(SR) - You worked on the Jaws ride? I'm super jealous. I pick that! Earthquake!
(SC) - Cedar Point, they have the best roller coasters!
(TB) - Sea World, I've never been there but I know I'd like it.
SCOTT, CEDAR POINT I HEAR IS KICK-ASS! THEODORE, SEA WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF OWNING AN ANNUAL PASS, AND IT WAS WORTH IT. TRUST ME! IT WAS SO A BLAST TO WORK WITH A KILLER SHARK SHANNON!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR, AND WHEN YOU THINK OF IT WHAT COMES TO MIND? THIS IS ALL YOU.
(TB) - Blue…I always wear blue shoes.
(SR) - Can't I pick the whole rainbow? I can't pick just one!
(SC) - I like bright yellow, it reminds me of my favorite shirt.
IF YOU COULD BE A SUPERHERO FOR A DAY, WHAT MAGICAL POWERS WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHAT WOULD BE YOUR WEAPON ON CHOICE? IT HAS TO BE A MUSIC INSTRUMENT THOUGH. THAT IS THE KICKER!! I WOULD CHOOSE "THE ABILITY TO GO THROUGH WALLS" (TO GET AWAY QUICKER). MY WEAPON OF CHOICE WOULD BE…A TYMPANI! *LAUGHS* HEY, WHO IS GONNA TRY TO STOP A HUGE DRUM FLAILING AT THEM! NOT ME!
(TB) - To summon dogs with a singing saw
(SC) - I would be able to stop time and I'd use a guitar.
(SR) - My power would be to make evil words fly back in the mouths of those who said them…I'd use a bullhorn of course!
YOU GUYS ARE SO CREATIVE! LOVE IT!
LAST ONE...WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE THAT YOU'VE PERFORMED IN AND WHY?
(All) - We loved Schubas in Chicago. You get great amazing sound!
TELL US SOMETHING SILLY ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NOBODY KNOWS. TRUST ME THERE'S NOTHING I HAVEN'T HEARD. YOU'D BE AMAZED.
(SR) - I'd never had a pickle until last year. Now I love them!
(TB) - I can't stop laughing around dogs.
(SC) - I watch Oprah.
WOW! NEVER HAD A PICKLE UNTIL LAST YEAR! I'M GLAD YOU LOVE THEM...ME TOO! WATCHING "OPRAH" IS QUITE ALRIGHT, AND TELL ME HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO SUMMON DOGS AND FIGHT CRIME IF YOU LAUGH AROUND THEM! *SMILES*
OKAY, NOW I'M MAKING IT INTERESTING, YOU CAN ASK ME A QUESTION, AND I HAVE TO ANSWER IT!! THIS WILL PROBABLY NEVER HAPPEN IN MOST INTERVIEWS. I'M COOL I CAN DO IT. *LAUGHS*
(SR) - If you were an item of food on a buffet table what would you be? (we're obsessed with food!!!!)
*LAUGHS* HERE IS MY ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION SHANNON!
(Cynthia) - I'd pick watermelon, but you told me you'd be that! *laughs* So, I'd have to say something equally as yummy…fruit cocktail! Just like my personality it has a little bit of everything packed into one dessert. I love fruit…I think I could live off of it. *smiles*
