'Baby Mama' Arrives in Top Spot at Box Office

"Baby Mama," the female-led comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, easily beat "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" starring John Cho and Kal Penn arriving in the top slot at the box office.

Delivering high marks with both critics and audiences alike, "Baby Mama" brought home an estimated $18.3 million dollars, besting "Harold & Kumar" by about $3.7 million dollars. The "Harold & Kumar" stoner sequel escaped with an estimated $14.6 million in takings. This almost triples what "Harold & Kumar" took home with their first outing, "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," which opened August 1, 2004 with $5.4 million.

The Jackie Chan/ Jet Li martial arts picture "Forbidden Kingdom" slipped to the third spot but was not forgotten by audiences as they shelled out an estimated $11.2 million dollars to see the first-time on screen pairing of Chan and Li.

But there is no deceit involved when reporting the numbers for the Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor led thriller "Deception." The sex-themed picture just couldn't get it up and opened soft at number 10 with an estimated  $2.2 million inches dollars. Hindered by poor critical reviews and a lackluster marketing campaign, this one was destined for failure. I can't wait to see it on DVD.

With April almost over, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief that these warm-up movies are behind us and that the blockbusters of summer are dead ahead!

Coming this Friday, "Iron Man" is sure to ignite the summer movie box office and get things started with a bang! I am so excited to see this movie that I can hardly wait for Thursday.

(Oh yeah, if you haven't heard, "Iron Man" will be opening on May 1 in select theaters at 8 PM. Check local listings.)
