Members of Boys Like Girls, Bayside Speak Out Against Russian Bill to Outlaw Emo

Imagine getting expelled, fined or even arrested for listening to emo and goth music? ... If you live in Russia, this may be a reality by the end of 2008.

According to Kerrang!, the Moscow Times obtained information of a proposed bill, titled the "Government Strategy In the Sphere of Spiritual and Ethical Education" bill, that would ask for all emo and goth Web sites to be regulated and for all emo and gothic-looking students to be banned from schools. Can you imagine that!?

Why is the committee going to extreme measures to silence these common lifestyles, you may be asking yourself? "Social danger" and "a threat to national stability" are two of the phrases used by bill author Igor Ponkin of the Russian Interior Ministry's Public Oversight Council to describe the emo culture. You think he's joking, right? But he isn't ... "This type of behaviour is a crucial part of emo ideology. Of course there are emo teens who just listen to their music. But our actions are not directed at them but rather at those who also hurt themselves, commit suicide and promote those acts," Ponkin added.

Not everyone in Russia is in support of the new bill. In fact, psychologist Inna Cherkova strongly diagrees with it. "Suicide is not a symptom of emo culture. I work with other teens too, and every group has emotionally troubled kids," Cherkova told the Moscow Times. Bayside bassist Nick Ghanbarian spoke to Buzznet exclusively about the incident, stating: "I'm not sure what 'emo' is over in Russia, but whatever it is, it needs to be stopped! I'm all for the bill." Ghanbarian quickly added that he was joking and can't judge because he has no clue as to what is actually going on in Russia at this time regarding emo.

Meanwhile, Boys Like Girls bassist Bryan Donahue got serious to Buzznet over the matter, explaining: "I think it's pretty ridiculous that governments are going to such extremes to try and control people. If kids in this situation don't do something to stop this, it can only get worse for their children in the future."

NME reported that the bill was presented last month at a hearing where critics exclaimed that the 'negative emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.' To go even further in-depth on the matter, The Guardian revealed that during this hearing emo kids were described as "teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that 'cover half the face.'"

How can you stereotype emos and goths as the 'only' two groups of people that 'commit suicide' and 'hurt themselves?' Do these statements upset you? Do you agree with them? What would you do if this law was passed in your country? Spill your heart out in the comments.

That is such bullshit. Like you said, "emo" & "goth" kids aren't the only ones who do those things. We need to stop putting labels on people like they're food or something. This is also like discrimination. How can you tell someone that they can't dress a certain way or listen to a certain kind of music? That's ridiculous. I say all the "emo" & "goth" kids do a rally to give their opinions & make others see that they're just as harmful or harmless as any other group of people on earth.

As for it happening in America, I highly doubt it. We can basically do what ever we want with ourselves. I feel bad for others who can't do the same.

get real... thats rediculous.
on and on and on...: 07/23/2008 2:33 PM
THAT IS RIDICULUS! Suicide is not limited to “only” emos and Goths… it’s not even limited to an age group or a type of person. Suicide is a serious matter that shouldn’t be treated like a fad… especially by a government. To stereotype at all is in the wrong… but t o limit people because of what they look like is discrimination, I thought the world was getting past that.

I believe this i s all around wrong… and it does upset me… < br />
I don’t know what I would do if this was happening here, but I would have to do som ething… protest, petition, pray, I don’ t know.

It’s just not right…. Natural r ights anybody?
braaaaaaaaaaaaainssssss: 07/23/2008 2:38 PM
who gets to regulate what type of kids "look" emo and goth?? both subcultures have varied appearances.
ashuhhwhee: 07/23/2008 3:18 PM
loads of crap.
that's stupid.
xloratx: 07/23/2008 3:40 PM
thats so stupid, how would they even regulate that? sure someone who dresses in all black could be suicidal but seriously? what the hell. cause not EVERY goth and emo people are hurting themselves or thinking about suicide

come on russia,
what a bunch of shit
katiexlee: 07/23/2008 4:04 PM
that is completely ridiculous. the government should not be able to ban something like that, they have no right to. They shouldn't be able to discriminate against something that maybe they just don't understand or like. emo and goth kids aren't the only ones who hurt themselves, kids in other sterotypes have problems too.
robotlion: 07/23/2008 4:09 PM
this is bull
some of the most 'normal' kids are the ones with serious problems and the ones self manipulating and committing suicide
it's impossible to stereotype people like that
underthegun: 07/23/2008 4:40 PM
That is completely insane. "Emo/goth" kids aren't what people make them out to be. Judgemental much?
Sheesh. Bands today are doing anything but promoting suicide and self destruction.
They obviously haven't heard the much voiced phrase, "*insert favorite band* saved my life". Bands ARE making a difference in kids lives, not destroying them.

Whatever.
Are people really that narrow minded and stupid?
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. And I'm labeled as one of the goth kids at school, and I'm not suicidal.
There are more "normal people" at my school who are more depressed, suicidal, and self abusive. And I've never even heard any of the goth/emo kids at my school promoting suicide and self injury. Few of them have self-injured (including me) and tried to kill themselves, and we tell other people who are thinking about doing it not to. And we help them to stop or get help.
This is just really insulting and stupid.

THATS RIDICULOUS!
i dont want to get into a whole rant, but all i have to say right now is that is extremely RIDICULOUS!
Panda!: 07/23/2008 7:45 PM
the government shouldnt be able to even propose a bill that should stifle self expression.what right does a bunch of grouchy old dudes in suits have to tell teenagers how they can and cannot dress? I'm labeled one of the emo kids in my school and im not suicidal. its just so ridiculus...i dont want to get into a whole rant about it so ill just leave with: THIS IS BULLSHIT.
that is all.
Nessa: 07/23/2008 8:13 PM
That is the biggest crap ever. it's absolutely ridiculous! theres teens in every group that has problems and think about suicide, not only just one group. and not everyone labled as emo promote suicide or self harm. this is horrible and Russsia shouldn;t be able to pass this bill. it takes away the rights of people and that is wrong. I hope that Russian teens stand up for what is right and not let this happen. its crap!!!
justtaylor: 07/23/2008 8:27 PM
thats mean. emos do kinda get on my nerves but people should get 2 be what they want. i mean yea they are tryin 2 stop suicide but like they said its not just those kids. thats pretty crazy.:/
xloratx: 07/24/2008 9:46 AM
and the thing is, kids don't know who they are when theyre teens/ kids there just experimenting
