February 4, 2008It's called industry declination. This is something that's been bothering me lately, and I've come to understand it better now that I have an iPod and I know a little bit more about the business side of the music industry. Now, I understand if you're a huge music fan but you just can't afford it right now and you download illegally with full on promises that you will in fact buy the hard copy once you get the money. But for the kids who call themselves music fans but think the hard copy is a worthless piece of shit and only want the singles, those kids bug the shit out of me. Because, in this day and age, kids don't want hard copy, they don't have the attention span for a whole album which is really sad considering music is pretty much the basis of what drives people. The type of music you listen to can define you so much. But I'm gonna let you in on a secret, record companies are losing money and going under. Record stores are going bankrupt and shutting down. If you walk into a Best Buy today and take a look at the CD selection I guarantee you that in a year it'll shrink down to half the size. And do you want to know why? Internet. iTunes. Napster. Rhapsody. Limewire. All these franchises or whatever you want to call them are the reason why record labels aren't making money. It's the reason why bands aren't making money. It's the reason why when you go to shows there's probably only a handful of kids who know every word to every song. Labels are signing as many new artists as they can because those artists or bands are what are popular on myspace at that time. What happens when they lose their luster? They probably get dropped. I mean, don't consider this shit talking but, Boys Like Girls are one of the biggest bands right now...what happens in a year when people are done with them? The music industry is in such a weird place right now. Artists are barely selling a damn thing music wise so they have to rely on shows and merch sales. You want to know why ticket prices are so high? Music downloads. Why is it 25$ for a T-shirt? Music downloads. It's getting to a point where labels are trying to get bands to sign a deal where they give most of their proceeds from merch sales to them. Any smart band wouldn't do that, but I'm sure that a very naive band would. We don't really even need record labels anymore...do we? Well, funny thing. Yeah we kinda do, but on the other hand we kinda don't. There's this thing called myspace, and it's kinda ruining things while also making other things beautiful. There are so many bands or artists out there that shouldn't be signed, but are because the labels know that idiotic "I don't give a shit what I listen to" people will buy that shit like candy, where as bands like Cities & Thrones are being turned down because they're not the next Fall Out Boy. Sure, I buy shit off of iTunes, but it's mostly EPs of bands that aren't available in hard copy. I buy singles from artists like Amy Winehouse that I don't want the whole CD of. But most of the stuff I buy on iTunes are music videos, and I download way too many podcasts. But for me, to survive, I have to have hard copies. I'm that kid. Labels are trying so hard to pump up the packages of CDs now, like the deluxe edition with DVDs and shit because they know that dedicated fans will buy it. So do me a favor? Get your ass off iTunes, go to Best Buy or F.Y.E. ((if that's still around)) and go buy one of your favorite band's oldest CD, or buy a CD from an artist that you've heard a few things from but you know you absolutely love, and save the music industry. Cause, without it, I'd die. xoxo, October Elizabeth Note: The reference to the band Boys Like Girls was just an opinion. It is my opinion and mine alone. It's not as if I'm saying they're going to fall off the face of the planet, I just feel as if they're one of those bands that aren't going to be around for much longer. Who knows? Maybe in the next year they'll put out a badass album, get bigger, and prove me wrong. Again, this was just an opinion, I don't need your shitty comebacks. Oh, and remember, if you download illegally instead of buying hardcopies, well you have no reason whatsoever to bitch about ticket prices.
