New To Me - Bands I Just Discovered At Coachella 2009

All aboard the last train to Lateville! These bands have been rocking for some time, yet I just discovered them. Maybe if I wasn't so busy making the internet safe I would be on the good foot with what's hip these days. Without any further ado, here are the acts I just found out about this year at Coachella 2009.

The Hold Steady and Buraka Som Sistema

Hunter Burgan Analyzes This ... Chess Boards And Coachella's Filter Magazine Party

Some pictures, as I am learning, are worth 1000 words, but after I'm done with them, you'll be lucky if you can pawn them for 200 words. For the second round of Analyze This, I spent the usual 30 seconds of my precious time analyzing 2 images: one was uploaded by a Buzznet member (in this particular case a Buzznet staff member), the other is random picture found online. Indulge in my analysis

Travis Barker And DJ AM Talk Beats, Blink-182 And Coachella

Buzznet caught an exclusive interview with the boys of TRV$DJAM before they took the trek out to the desert to play this year's Coachella Festival. When Travis Barker (Blink-182, +44) and DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) join forces even Michael Jackson might be caught dancing. Find out which artists would make DJ AM and Travis' ultimate tour. [cut=For the full interview, read on ...]

Buzznet: No Doubt's summer tour with Paramore and The Sounds is the ultimate summer tour. If you could assemble three artist to tour with to create your own "ultimate" tour, who would come on the road with you?

DJ AM: Biggie, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix... But I don't think that's gonna happen.

Travis: Kid Cudi, The Police and AM and I.

Buzznet: When choosing songs for mash ups and remixes, is it a collaborative effort?

DJ AM:  Its always a colab. I may bring up a song Trav is not feeling so we keep moving. We both gotta make that, "Oh shit, this sounds good" face.

Travis:  Adam usually comes with the some songs, I have some song ideas and then we see what jams and what doesn't.

Buzznet: Travis, what challenge does drumming to remixes provide you? What techniques do you have for coming up with a beat when you hear what Adam's created?

TravisIt's always a challenge. Sometimes it sound good just to double up on drums and improv when I want. It's always a challenge learning all the programmed drum parts to different songs.

Buzznet: Adam, what one artist have you found to be the most fun to remix?

DJ AM:  I love hearing Travis play live, HARD drums over Rush - "Tom Sawyer." It just sounds right.

Buzznet: Why did you decide to release the "Fix Your Face" mixtape for free online?

DJ AM:  Why not?

Travis: It was one of our sets from the Roxy shows and we figured we'd record it.

Buzznet: Travis, you mentioned in an LA Times interview last summer that creating beats "is really natural" for you. Can we expect you to integrate that technique into your work with Blink-182 this summer?

Travis:  Here and there I'm sure there will be some programming I create but for the most part Blink calls for live drums.

Buzznet: What type of energy do you bring to your live show? Do you work off a traditional "setlist" or is everything improv?

DJ AM:  We make a set of tons of songs we like and that sound good, then we whip 'em together!

Travis:  It really depends on the set; sometimes we improv and just feel things out.

Buzznet: Travis, since you come from a background in punk/hardcore, any chance we'll see more TRV$DJAM mash-ups with old hardcore songs (perhaps some Dag Nasty)?

Travis:  That would be fun. I don't know if it fits though. Dag Nasty rules.

Buzznet: Adam, if you could choose one song apiece from Blink-182, No Doubt, and Green Day to throw on a mix tape, what would you choose and why?

DJ AM:  'Josie' by Blink, 'Big City Train' by No Doubt and 'Longview' by Green Day. I love them all. The BPMs wouldn't allow me to mix em, but those 3 songs rule.

Buzznet: Coachella is known for drawing popular musicians and high-profile celebrities as attendees. Who would you be excited to see dancing along and enjoying your music this weekend?

DJ AM:  I don't really care WHO is there, as long as they are there for the right reasons. The music. I'd rather see Joe the Plumber going nuts when we play Queen then a reality TV star trying to look cool.

Travis:  Hopefully Michael Jackson.

TRV$DJAM play Coachella on Saturday in the Sahara Tent, from 7:20pm - 8:20pm.

A Buzznet Guide To Surviving Coachella

You may think that the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is just like every other festival on the planet: huge, overwhelming, and outside. Oh, quite the contrary, my Buzznet friends. It is hardly ordinary in any sense of the word. This will by my fourth year attending the fully-submersive music experience and, while I'm certainly not the MEGA EXPERT on all things Coachella, I've picked up a thing or two that will help those people referred to as "n00bz" navigate the desert fairgrounds.

Find out how you can survive Coachella this year...

Sound the Horns. Coachella is Coming!! Win Tix!!

Australia has the Big Day Out festival, the UK has the Glastonbury festival and Serbia has the Exit Festival, but one of the world's greatest music festivals takes place right outside of Los Angeles...and I get to go this weekend :)  If you guys don't know about Coachella you should!  It takes place in the desert about an hour and a half away from Los Angeles and goes on for 3 days with a ton of bands, djs and parties.  I went last year and had so much fun and this year should be even better since there's so many bands I'm excited to see.  I'll be splitting my time between watching shows and stopping by some of the parties.  It's going to be so hot there...in the 90's or hundreds but its such a fun time and I always bump into so many random people there.

There's over 100 bands playing, but here are the 10 I'm most excited to see:

TING TING'S

PAUL MCCARTNEY

DJ AM

 THE CURE

THE KILLERS

YEAH YEAH YEAH'S

 MSTRKRFT

LYKKE LI

Coachella: Art Attack In The Making

No matter how much attention is paid to the bands performing at this weekend's Coachella festival — who the frack is Paul McCartney, anyway? — it's well worth remembering that a perennially major draw at the fest is the array of art pieces and installations rising from the field.

Each year, Coachella's organizers use their big rock n' roll party as maybe the best outdoor art exhibit in the country (well, certainly the best art exhibit in the country where you can see M.I.A., The Cure and Mastodon live). In past years, it's been a place to sneak a peek at what's next in hipster aesthetics (steampunk, anyone?). Now we've got a sweet little preview of some of the massive and yes, misty art you'll probably see this weekend. It'll be hard to miss.

The Bamboo Starscraper:

A collaboration between designer Gabriel Nordyke and eco-friendly building company Bamboo DNA, this 80-foot tall structure will make you think about the power of nature. The Starscraper — which will build on designs featured at Coachella and its East Coast cousin, the All Points West festival — will loom large over the field and appears to be built to withstand anything except very hungry panda bears.

The Tesla Coil:

This high-voltage transformer has been a Coachella regular, and it delivers a jolt every time. Another deceptively simple piece that underscores the natural forces that shape our world, the coil is essentially a modified version of the same electricity generator devised by Nikola Tesla roughly 120 years ago. But hey, if it ain't broke, you know? There's nothing better than seeing that blue electric charge fire up the desert sky at night.

The Serpent Mother:

No, the Octomom has not been added to the Coachella lineup. But we'll tell you who has: this beastly flaming venus flytrap that looks like the collision of Little Shop of Horrors and Backdraft. Created by the fabulous Flaming Lotus Girls art collective, the mama snake has already made the rounds at Burning Man. Now she's headed straight for Indio, Calif. All we know is, she is going to scare the crap out of Morrissey.

The Elastic Plastic Sponge:

Like a tidal wave made entirely of plastic tubing, the Sponge will serve two essential purposes at the festival: it will blow minds and spray water on bodies. Yes, the designers — credit goes to the Ball-Nogues studio and the enterprising students at the Southern California Institute of Architecture — engineered the sponge with a giant misting system that will keep festival-goers from wilting in Coachella's inferno-like climate. And like the lineup of Escape the Fate, this art installation is ever-changing: the designers say they plan to mold the Sponge into different shapes during the course of the weekend.

And there you have it. You have to hand it to the organizers: they know where to find insanely oversize art pieces that really are best experienced in the middle of the desert. Are you going to be there? Do you have any suggestions for giant artworks that might go over well at a rock concert?

Here Is A Plea From My Heart To You

Why must love be so complicated!? Things break, but I keep trying to put the pieces back together. Why? Is it right that I keep trying? I really don't know, but I can't give up.

Anyways, I'm stuck in Anthropology class. I vow to never take any anthro class again.

Finals next week... :/
Just worried about 1 class, the others I'm good.

Depeche Mode has be completely broke. Might not be able to make it to Coachella. I'm trying to find a way to make some money so I can go. Who wants to get me a 3 day pass!? :[

Yay, my car is fixed! I just have to wash it now. haha

Can't wait for my 1 week off for spring break. Photos galore!

I'm dying to shoot another show.

It's hot as fuck! WTF happened to winter?

That's enough for now. :]
