Buzznet - Flyleaf - Family Values Tour Boston Re-Cap

[This is a long blog and it was/is being typed out across a few hours. Any missing words, grammatical mistakes, or spelling errors will be fixed when I have time to proof-read it]

Hey Hey Hey....

Now that the exhaustion has faded out of my system I'm ready to rock everyone's world with a re-cap of my trip to Boston to see some of the world's best rock and metal bands at the Family Values Tour, and my meet and greet with THE best new rock band, Flyleaf.

Let's begin...

After working a few hours on Friday I rushed home to finish packing, it was like seeing a child storming through a Toys'R'Us store with a handful of cash. I drove home so fast it seemed like a blur. When I was finally ready to go the butterflies started floating around my stomach, but trust me it was nowhere near as bad as it was sitting there waiting to meet Flyleaf.

Once I arrived at the airport I did the usual security check and all that fun stuff. I made my way to the gate only to find out there was a massive storm in Boston and all flights into and out of Logan International were on a ground hold. We were also closely approaching the critical eight-hour window for our pilots who had been flying all day. After a pilot has flown 8 hours in one day the FAA requires them to stop. So we had to get in the air before that time was met. Thankfully I found a Subway to help my hunger pangs and keep my mind off the possibility that I wouldn't make it to Boston. After about 45 minutes they announced we were clear to fly and so we were off to northeast. Which I must say, flying at dusk is one of the most beautiful things a person can experience, the sky is just magnificent looking from that high up while the sun is setting to the West.

When we landed in East Boston I quickly assembled my stuff and headed for the Budget Car Rental. I then decided to hit up downtown Boston for some food before making the 45 minute trek south to my hotel in Foxboro. If you've never been to Boston, you truly have no idea how incredibly aggresive the drivers there are or really how bad the traffic is period. I partially credit their driving style to the horribly laid out transportation system though. I thought Chicago was bad, but Boston really takes the cake.

I left Boston between 12:30 am and 1:00 am. In no way amI lying about this next part, I didn't arrive at my hotel until 4:00 am. That's just how incredibly difficult it is to navigate through Boston and the rest of Massachusetts. I can't even put it into words as to why it's difficult, but people who live there know what I'm talking about with the highways and proximity of signs to the exits. Not to mention the distinct confusion and multitude of those signs. It's just a horrible place to go for first-timers... a taxi is totally the way to go there.

Now on to the better news... I arrived at my hotel, checked in, and was utterly amazed at how great the place was. Buzznet put me up in the Marriott in Foxboro (the ones with the suites). I settled in, crashed, and tried to fight the adrenaline and excitement that was keeping me awake so I could sleep a few hours before the show.

I really could NOT sleep, so I headed down for breakfast at the hotel, which was pretty good actually. Then I showered up, changed, and realized how early it still was. I decided to take a nap [or try to anyway]. I woke about 2:00, called the photographer from Buzznet and headed out to Mansfield. I found the place pretty quickly [daylight driving rocks], hit up the McD's for a quarter pounder meal [5.50!! food in MA is too expensive], and then finished up with a quick trip to the local grocery in the same parking lot. I grabbed a Red Bull and some kleenexes [I was fighting a slight sinus/cold problem], and then went to look for parking at the venue. When I rolled up I heard Deadsy finishing up their set - which sucked because that's twice I missed Walls of Jericho and Deadsy. I headed over to the check-in area and strode proudly up to the Band Guest List ticket window. I nabbed my mainstage pass and ticket and then went in to the roaring show.

After making a few phone calls I went over and watched Bury Your Dead finishing their set. The band has this incredible amount of energy and I managed to get a few pictures of them before I was to head over to get the meet and greet with Flyleaf underway. At this point my nervousness wat at an all-time high. I could almost feel my legs buckling under the absolute anticipation and excitement of meetnig the band.

I went to the backstage gate and waited for my escort, the band's tour manager's assistant. We talked for a few until Andrew [Buzznet's Photographer] arrived. He then suited me up with a microphone, did some audio testing, and filmed me doing an intro for the interview. A few minutes later, Scotty Rock the band's tour manager greeted us. The guy has this total rockstar look but was incredibly nice. He filled me in on the details for the meet and greet and then took us back.

Every step I took felt surreal at that point, my heart started racing, my hands got a little clammy, and I almost thought I was going to pass out. It was too much to take in, I was about to meet Flyleaf... the first time I'd ever met a group of people that were that big... I think all in all it was the feeling that maybe I wouldn't know what to say or that I would say something embarassing that kept me on the edge of sanity for those 40 steps to their dressing room.

When I rounded the corner, there they were... Lacey, Pat, Sameer, James, and Jared. They smiled, I smiled, we all shook hands, and then I was completely overtaken with this awe-struck grin. I think they knew I was nervous as hell, but in a way they seemed a little out of their element too. It was comforting in a way... as I kept telling them how exciting this all was and how shaky I felt, they kept telling me it's ok, etc. They were humble and that was great. I then recieved my Virgin Mobile Kyocera Slider Sonic phone and the we kicked off the interview since they were due on stage right after Dir en Grey was finished with their set.

I ran through nine of my ten questions which they all answered quite thoughtfully and again they were very humble about their success when it came to questions concerning that. You'll really have to see the video to get the full effect, but they were incredibly easy to interview since they seemed to be as honored to be interviewed as I was to be interviewing them.

Once the interview concluded everyone shook my hand and thanked for coming out, and I did the same. Lacey agreed to talk to my friend Thomas as well, he's the one who got me interested in the band, so it was a real honor for him to get to talk to her. Then Pat and Jared talked to him too. It was a-mazing, seriously.

I headed out with the Buzznet guys soon after so the band could get ready for their set. Since I had a mainstage pass they told me I could be on stage to watch the band play. I swung out there to catch Dir en Grey, since I missed 10 Years. When we came back as they were about to go live, security told me [very rudely] that I needed to have an escort from the band's tour management. So I tried to grab Scotty but he was too far away and he also couldn't hear his phone. I walked out with one very big sadface and watched them play from my seat in the lower pavilion.

I guess Scotty and the Buzznet crew came to find me right after I left to bring me on stage but I was angry about the security so I didn't think to wait around for them. I figured I would only end up missing seeing Flyleaf play. Sadly I kinda missed them playing live because I was so bummed about how things turned out with the backstage thing. For the record it wasn't part of the promotion or anything, it was an added bonus that came with my photo pass and that the band was totally going to honor.

When their set finished, I went for a walk, humming the tracks along in my head, and making phone calls to tell everyone how wicked my day was so far. I then came back and watched Stone Sour play which was honestly pretty awesome. Then one of my other long-time favorite bands came out, the Deftones. Chino proved he still has the fire needed to light the crowd on fire and continued to do so throughout their whole set.

After they finished their set the tour's founders came out... KORN!

I saw them a week previous to this event so I knew what to expect but being that close to the stage it was like a brand new experience. One that was harder, heavier, and a thousand times more crazy. I got soaked by the fire hose Jonathon Davis brought out, I slammed my head, jumped, threw my fists into the air, and generally rocked the f**k out to one of their best live sets ever performed.

I decided to leave about 15 minutes early so I could beat the traffic going towards my hotel, which was still futile since I got lost AGAIN. After driving around for about an hour trying to find the right direction to my hotel I stopped for directions and finally got set in the right direction. I grabbed a Dominos Pizza on the way and then slept till like 10:30 am on Sunday. I checked out of my hotel about 12:10 pm and then went out to venture around Boston before heading to the airport. The downtown Boston area was horrible for finding a parking spot, so I finally spent 10 bucks after driving another hour and a half trying to find Government Square and somewhere to park.

It seems like most of my weekend was spent being lost, =[ I had a killer time though, meeting Flyleaf was one of the coolest moments in my entire lifetime, and seeing all the historical places in Boston was second to that.

I can't thank Buzznet, Flyleaf, Kyocera, and Virgin Mobile enough. I am eternally grateful and hopefully I'll have the chance to meet the band again, as they have been a huge source of inspiration for me.

Family Values Tour

OMG ! At the family values tour on Aug. 5, My friend Logan and I saw Flyleaf, Korn, The Deftones, Bury Yor Dead, Stone Sour, 10 years, Dir En Grey, and Deadys..(whoever they are). Well let's see... People were drunk, some 40 year old chick threw up right next to me then a fat guy stepped in it. Flyleaf was REALLY good. After they played they were like signing and stuff, but you had to buy their album in order to talk to them or whatever. I already had it so it was really no use. When they were done, Lacey and her body guard dude were leaving to go backstage from the FYE tent. When she was walking off, she signed a few more people's like pants or shirts or whatever. I WAS A FOOT AWAY FROM HER! Omg, I was about to get her attention when she was walking off, but I was too breath taken and my heart was literally beating fast! That's the closest Ive ever been to someone famous I actually know and like. Besides that, I met some band named Terminal and got their cd at a mall in dallas. I wasn't too excited well..cuz i didn't know them. But I knew Lacey!!! And she smiled at me! If only I could relive that moment.   Oh, and then like a week later after the concert, my BF told me that the lead singer(Mat) from Bury Your Dead died that same night while thay were signing. He told me that when they were signing a drunk dude came up to him and try to get in a fight and Mat refused so the drunk dude broke his neck and killed him instantly.
