Song of the Day

**11/4/09
Pearl Jam - Army Reserve
--------------What glorious and strange wonders befell me in my music world today! The tone of this post is going to be rather bipolar, and you'll definitely understand with the information I have to share.

First of all - got my Brand New ticket! They'll be coming through Charlotte this coming Monday with Thrice and Crime in Stereo. Too bad I'm poor and can't see them with Glassjaw in New York. But still - I'm definitely not embarassed to geek out about this show.

Second of all - and here's the bad news - due to a family circumstance beyond their control, Dashboard Confessional have cancelled the remainder of their fall tour. I'm sadder than a hipster who spilled java on their Moleskine (oh, wait...that was me).

I was given a list of bands to look through, and if I have to hear another jam or ambient electronica band, I'm pretty confident I'll turn into a robot. Therefore, I turned to a group that takes me back to, well, the first PJ album I ever bought, their self-titled 2006 album with the Avacado against a deep blue background.

"Army Reserve" was never hyped like the not-so-fantastic anti-establishment "World Wide Suicide," but it's got a haunting attitude towards what is service and sacrifice. Vedder's unmistakable straining voice against spooky guitars...the "Jeremy" effect that I'm looking for today.

Album Review: Brand New "Daisy"

Brand New released their debut album Your Favorite Weapon in 2001. It included catchy songs such as “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad” and “Seventy Times 7.” With each album release after that, Brand New’s music has grown and matured. Their newest release Daisy is no exception.

The opening song “Vices” begins as a soft hymn and then abruptly turns into chaotic guitars and an angry Jesse Lacey screaming “We need vices!” The album continues with the soft ballad “Bed,” and then the single “At the Bottom,” which resembles many of the songs on their 2006 album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.

One of the more musically interesting songs “Gasoline,” is a display of fast paced guitar tempos and emotionally challenging lyrics. However, the sixth song “Be Gone,” leaves you confused with its muddled indecipherable sounds. Immediately following, “Sink” is another emotion filled song as Lacey sings “You want to sink, so I’m gonna let you.” The album wraps up with the softer song “Noro.”

Overall, this may be Brand New’s most musically diverse album released. Lyrically the album touches on darker topics than most fans have heard in the past. There are some tracks that you can’t get enough of and others that will be skipped. Many will have mixed feelings about the album in general. One thing is for sure, Brand New is not the same pop punk band there were back in 2001.

Free Music - Too Much Of A Good Thing?

We all know by now that people get a lot of their music for free, whether it be from illegal downloads or streaming songs online. And we all know the negative effects this has on the music industry. But one positive aspect that is usually cited is that with free music comes a greater awareness of music. This is because people are more likely to listen to bands they've never heard of if they don't have to pay.  But does even this positive side effect to streaming and downloading have a downside? This article sites an interview where Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood says it does.

According to him, people may have thousands of songs, but just use it as background music and no longer pay as much attention to it.  To a certain extent I can see his point. I have about 6400 songs on my iTunes and a lot of that is music from friends that I haven't listened to yet. I always mean to check it out, but when it comes time to choose something to listen to, I'm drawn towards the familiar.  So what I'll often do instead is put on an album I haven't listened to while I'm doing homework.  Since I don't know the lyrics, I am less likely to get distracted and will actually get work done. But because I'm doing work, I'll frequently not even notice when songs change and nothing sinks in, so in some cases it's as if I still haven't ever listened to it.

However, there are also times when something is so good it will stand out to me, even if I'm multitasking. For example, over the summer I was cleaning my room so I set my iPod on shuffle and vowed to not skip any songs in order to be exposed to the music I have from my friends. At one point "The Quiet Things The No One Ever Knows" came blasting through the speakers and I stopped what I was doing to look at my iPod so I could see who it was by. I've been hooked on Brand New ever since. In fact, I'm streaming their new album Daisy from their Myspace as I write this. Go check it out!

So what do you think? Does multitasking while listening to music lessen the enjoyment and awareness of the music, or is it just the way of our generation?
