The Brooklyn quartet's self-released, sophomore album was one of my favorites of 2007. It's hard to pin down their sound to a single influence, but that's what makes the group so immediate. The Girlfriends cut corners very quickly, recalling Sonic Youth, Blur and Pavement. Vocalist/guitarist Holly Miranda will remind you of PJ Harvey, only with more energy and soul. In May the band will see its re-release of their sophomore album on Good Fences in the U.S. with select dates opening for Nada Surf and Sea Wolf.
