Apathy and Urgency - Part 3
--ABBIE'S P.O.V--
I pulled my phone out of my pocket when my ringtone started blasting in the middle of the restaurant.
"Excuse me..." I blushed and looked at my date, Aiden, as I rose from my seat. Dawn had insisted on my going out with one of her friends tonight, to try and take the heavy burden off of today. The caller ID screen flashed "B.U<3" and I rolled my eyes. I had forgot the heart there. my finger moved inbetween the 'accept' and 'reject' button as I tried to decide. Finally, I pushed the green button and held the phone to my ear.
"Hullo?" I tried to sound as casual as possible, even though my legs were feeling a little wobbly and I could hardly keep the phone to my ear since my arms were going weak.
"Hey...Abbie...it's Brendon" I could hear the uneasy tone in his voice, and I knew that he wanted to make this phone call short and sweet. Or sour, I guess it would depend.
"Oh...hey. Look, I can't talk for long. I'm on a date" I tried to accentuate the last word as much as possible - hoping that it would upset him at least a little. I swore I could hear his breath on a sharp inhale from the other side - but it may have just been wishful thinking. He recovered fast.
"Okay, I was just wondering if maybe you were busy Friday night? I was wondering if you wanted to hang out...as friends. I mean, I had always said that I wanted us to stay friends - but we haven't really been doing that, have we?" I swore I could feel my knees give out, but I stood strong and let him linger for a moment.
"I think that would be fine...Let me check my schedule. I don't know if Aiden and I are gonna go out again that night" I could almost hear him rolling his eyes on the other end - I was laying it on so thick that it was getting obvious I was lying, but I didn't care. "Nope, looks like I'm free. I guess I can meet you at the movie theatre at 7?" I tried to keep it casual and early, just like friends would. "I'll pay for popcorn" I threw in at the last second - the girl also pays when just friends hang out together.
"Okay, that sounds cool. I'll let you get back to your....date. I should probably call someone too - I can't let all these good looks and charm go to waste" I laughed a little before realizing what he was doing and composed myself.
"See you Friday" then I snapped the phone shut without saying goodbye and scurried back into the restaurant.

That had gone better than expected. I hadn't crashed and burned like I thought I would have. I was actually legit excited for it, too. I hadn't seen Abbie since the break up, and I missed her. She may not have been the best girlfriend for me, but she was always a really good best friend. I remembered the guys at band practice, and I threw on some jeans and a tee shirt. I was in a much better mood, and I could sing now. I grabbed my phone, wallet, and jumped in the car.
I arrived at Spencer's house about an hour after rehersal was planned to start. To my suprise, they were still working on the second song. I could practically hear the tension in the instruments - and especially in Ryan's voice.
"IF I HAVE TO TELL EITHER OF YOU ONE MORE TIME TO STAY ON KEY, I THINK I MAY LOSE IT. I SWEAR TO GOD. I WILL CRAP IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR DRUMS, SPENCER. EVEN THAT WOULD BE AN IMPROVEMENT OVER THIS TRASH YOU CALL MUSIC! AND JON, DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED. I SWEAR TO GOD. I SWEAR TO GO-"
"Ryan?" He turned around and tried to plaster a huge smile on his face.
"Brend! Heeeeeeeeeyyy...how are yaaaaa?" I gave him a quizzical look and walked over to the center mic, he looked eager and willing to let me have it.
"I'm fine. Abbie and I talked - we're hanging out Friday...as friends. She's even buying the popcorn" I could see Spencer and Jon look at eachother and roll their eyes. I wasn't sure if it was because of my conversation with Abbie, or because Ryan had just let loose on them like fireworks on the freaking 4th of July.
"That's really cool, dude. I hope you have a great time." Spencer smiled at me
"yeah...who knows? Maybe you've both matured enough for it to work out this time" Everyone shot Jon a look "what? I'm just trying to be optimistic..." his facial expression was lopsided and uncomftorable.
"Just be careful...we can't have two days a month where you're like this. I can't handle that." Ryan was always the one in the group that was most buisness-driven and serious. Jon and Spencer keep everyone's hopes up, while Ryan kept people focused.
And me? I was just the one who kept everyone interested and entertained.
