In defense of the Palins

Haven't watched the news lately? Or read the newspaper? Or even read your favorite political blog?
Then you might not've heard that John McCain's vice president pick, Alaska Govenor Sarah Palin's daughter, seventeen-year-old Bristol, is pregnant. Of course, Bristol "chose" to keep the child.

Do I agree with Palin's policies and opinions? No. I am pro-choice and for gay marriage.
But is it annoying me that Mrs. Palin is the one under fire when she can't stop her daughter from having sex? Yes. I mean, what was Palin supposed to do? Walk in on her daughter having sex, pick her up off the dude, and throw a chastity belt on her?

Of course, the media has forced a backlash out of Barrack Obama, who declined and said his mother had him 18.
John McCain basically said he knew Bristol was pregnant before he picked Palin, and didn't care.

Teenage pregnancy is not glamourous. There is no denying that.
But obviously, Obama, McCain, and Palin aren't focusing on the issue.
So can we just let the issue drop?

Also, not to sound cliche, but what message is this sending?
Get knocked up and you'll get attention?
And that message is coinciding with Jamie-Lynn's constant coverage of her teenaged pregnancy/motherhood, the teenage pregnancy pact scandal, and Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn sending the message that getting married and pregnant straight out of high-school is oh-so-fabulous.

And where is the sympathy for this poor girl?
First, her mom believes she doesn't have the right to chose whether she wants the child or not, even if she was raped.
Second, rumours swirl that Bristol is the supposed mother of five-month-old Trigg (who has Down Syndrome).
Third, she's pregnant.
Now, no one will leave her and her family alone about the incident.
Poor girl will probably have blogs all over write "slut" on her picture. Her mother's WikiPedia article will be infiltrated with "Palin has a daughter, Bristol, who is a slut who got pregnant at 17." and all sorts of horrible things (even though you can get pregnant your first time having sex, FYI.)

On a side-note, this is so not classy.
