A "concerned parent" noticed a lot of drinking in the latest Harry Potter movie. I can't really remember Neville serving drinks, but it must've been at the Slug Club Christmas Party. He could have been serving grape juice or ginger ale.

Personally, I think this woman is exaggerating. "Scene after scene" is more like three bit parts where Hermione is tipsy, until Katie Bell is cursed by the necklace, and then becomes dead sober in a matter of two seconds. Also, children could definitely overlook any drinking when the wizarding world is at war, and our three heroes are falling in love.

I'll leave the ultimate decision up to you: Is the drinking in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince going to affect younger generations?

considering that an obscene amount of children under 21 already heavily/regularly drink alcohol, i highly doubt that a miniscule amount of drinking in harry potter will have any impact at all.

In the books they actually address that butterbeer "isn't very strong" though it "is for a house elf" and Hermione so briefly appears "tipsy" that one could argue she wasn't. I mean, she puts her arms around her friends. Gasp!
Slughorn handing out mead is a little sketchy, but it didn't turn out well for Ron did it? But yeah, I feel it has a sort of "it's all ~magic" quality to it. I mean, Harry drink his Felix Felicitas and is like completely high. But kids won't make that connection.

Seriously, even when Ron wasn't technically drinking it, it looked like he had smoked twenty joints.

this is ridiculous. some people have too much time on their hands and can find nothing better to do other than scrutinizing everything and anything and then complaining about the highly insignificant 'problems' they found : S

Do parents seriously take the time to see when they are drinking butterbeer? That's insanity. And besides I doubt many kids will make a connection or notice. They probably think that butterbeer is just melted butter.

uhh.the film was written/filmed/taken place in the UK....where theres no legal drinking age (as long as the children drink in private homes. and not out in public on the streets) some people are really dumb :(

Actually, they do have a drinking age. It says so in the article I linked. The legal drinking age is 18, but those under that age can get a drink if they order it with food. Also, all the drinking is DONE in public in the movie.
I may think the author is overexaggerating, but she is on par with the English drinking laws.

I don't think it's as bad as a certain media watchdog group that shall remain nameless, who criticze shows (aimed at 14+, mind you) for displaying homosexuality.

that is true, but this is still as pointless as it gets. they gave the issue more exposure and attention by commenting on it. now youth will notice it, because of the hype they created. if they'd kept their mouths shut it would have slipped under the radar of 99 percent of the kids who viewed it.

Oh, they just think they're parenting.

Jesus, people will find anything to complain about.
kysaaah: 08/04/2009 6:17 PM
This woman needs to get a life. Is it really necessary to complain about something so minor? No one even notices the drinking in the movie (which is like three short scenes...GASP). What I'm more annoyed about is that how can someone go watch HBP and come out only concerned with the "excessive amount of drinking"? -________-

HEY, THAT PICTURE TAKEN OF RON AND I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A PRIVATE MOMENT.

DAMN PAPPARAZZI.

the movie shouldnt have been rated PG to begin with. the books get darker and get serious, why shouldnt the movies? it wouldnt make sense and i doubt a child is going to know what being tipsy looks like or even means. and if the parents are so concerned why arent the reading the books seeing what sort of crazy things their kids are reading? i dont know. most parents dont pay attention to shit and then try to bitch after the fact of something pissing them off. do your reasearch and realize everything isnt that bad. people need to relax.
