Travis McCoy Mugshot Released, Pete Wentz Speaks Up

The mugshot of Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy has surfaced online; McCoy was recently arrested for physically defending himself against a heckler. Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz has also come to the defense of his best friend. The plot thickens!

TMZ (really???) has posted McCoy's mugshot; is it as flattering as we hoped???

Wow. Looks like he spent a day in the sun at Warped Tour. Surprise!

TMZ is also suggesting that there's actually a warrant out for McCoy, but they then fail to substantiate their own story:
  • Cops popped McCoy for third-degree assault after he allegedly roughed up a fan who called him "f**king ignorant n****r." He was released Wednesday morning on $500 bail, but now, after investigating, cops want to talk to him again.
So do they want to talk to him again or is it a warrant? Not that I expect TMZ to abide by standard journalistic procedure, but come on.

Pete Wentz also posted a statement on his blog and on FriendsOrEnemies:
  • GOD BLESS THE EDIT BUTTON! I TEND TO OVERREACT WHEN MY FRIENDS ARE INVOLVED. I WASN’T THERE AND ALL I HAVE TO GO ON IS THE ACCOUNT OF ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS AND ALL I EVER WANT TO DO IS SUPPORT THEM. THERE IS NO FURTHER NEED FOR ME TO BLOW THIS OUT OF PROPORTION. I HATE HEARING PEOPLE CALLED THAT WORD. IT MAKES ME CRINGE. THATS ALL. KIND OF LIKE AT THE END OF THE CHAPELLE SHOW WHEN PEOPLE WERE LAUGHING AT THE RACIST JOKES RATHER THAN AT THE SATIRE OF THEM.

you know what? you call my friend a “n_gger”, i dont even give a fuck what happens to you. i dont want to see you in this scene. i dont want to see you at shows. you are who we write songs about. you are who we think about when we hate. radiohead, karma police over and over again in my head.

    what a joke.

you are fucking pathetic and anyone that disagrees should put their white hood on too. i dont want your ticket money. i dont want your cd sales. id rather be poor and unknown.

i am angrier than i have been in a long time. hate upon hate upon hate.

    thank god for my friends.

Yikes! Don't anger emo Wentz!

We initially reported the assault and arrest and this then sent our community into quite the fury. Additionally, the Gym Class Heroes camp claimed that McCoy had actually struck the heckler after he'd been punched in the knee.

Again, we promise to keep you updated on this ongoing saga! Follow our entire coverage of the '08 Warped Tour on our Warped Tour blog!

UPDATE: Kevin Lyman has now made a statement about the incident:
  • "I spent the better part of later that evening with Travis," Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman told LiveDaily. "He's going to have to face the responsibilities of his actions. I think it's an anomaly. I think something went very wrong and everyone's working on correcting that.

"I don't really think this is in his make up. Every [time] I've ever dealt with him, he's a really nice guy. But they ran the risk of almost not being on the tour. I don't think they want that."

It angers me that people are justifying and supporting violence. I'm not condoning what this jerk did by any means, but beating the dude with a mic head till it actually comes off (see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/toddowyoung/26310 82189/) is not the answer.

I'm terrified of the number of people agreeing with Petes journal, and supporting Travis for it. If these weren't 'our FBR boys' we would be writing off both their reactions as idiocy.

I have to agree with unsceneunheard; what Travis did in response wasn't the appropriate move and I think he knows this as well. Even Pete in this case realized that he had over-reacted.

I think that he shouldn't have stooped down to that guys level but seriously I get what he means. Violence isn't ever the answer but that statement made was completely out of line. I think charges against him should be dropped.

TMZ and all those websites alwasy post things before they hear the whole story...tomorrow they'll be telling people that Pete Wentz was there too.... I'm glad at least one website is reliable (buzznet :) )

I don't feel as bad about it IF it is true that the guy punched Travis in the knee. Still, I'm just not a fan of violence as a solution to problems.

lol @ Don't anger emo Wentz!

I'm going to regret commenting on this aren't I.

true, i suppose if he was struck first then technically it could have been self defense, but i think with it being like shiona was saying until the mic head fell off then it wasn't warranted
ultimately though he could and should have been the bigger person and walked away from it regardless of what was said
but like sara said its a huge mess

no one deserves to be called something like that. the man antagonized travis and he got what he a deserved in my opinion, although i'm not usually a supporter of violence.

end of story.

Punched in the Knee? Was he hit by a midget?
PanasonicYouth: 07/03/2008 3:36 PM
Did he get what he deserves though? I mean, is beating someone with a mic equal to being called a derogatory slur?

To me, Travis seemed so angry, he overreacted. Plain and simple. It's totally understandable, though that doesn't make it acceptable.

ALSO: I've updated the story to include Kevin Lyman's statement he just made.

I agree 110%.

I can only speak on behalf of myself, but it has nothing to do with Travis being on FBR or a member of band. I agree that it's only getting coverage on Buzznet for those reasons. I can think of several incidents, just within this year alone, that have been similar to this case where someone has reacted violently to racism and I completely supported them.

As with everything else, people are going to have different opinions about how it should/could have been handled. That's life.
gemmaxloves: 07/03/2008 3:46 PM
hmm that latest statement seems to be pushing towards damage limitation, its easy for someone who is a friend of the band to tell people they are one way or another, and sure there is a certain line there up to what you can and will believe, but the whole thing shouldnt have happened.
obviously travis is going to have to deal with what he did, but if someone calls him something again how is he going to react? the same different, obviously being called that is enough to make someone snap but at the end of the day he's the one who the public are going to judge

but yeah a swift knock to the knee and a slur doesnt constitute a beating with a mic

It's a different situation when you're the person being spoken to that way. Being black, I have dealt with my share of racism. I have wanted to react the same way in many of those situations. The only reason I had restraing a lot of the times is because I was outnumbered, or because I was in ana environment where I would definately get into trouble.

It's not just about THE WORD. It's about the hate and ignorance behind the dudes actions. Obviously, violence isn;t the answer for everything. Rational thinking goes out the window when you feel "attacked."

I support Travis 100%

Ditto. It's easy for people to say that he overreacted when you've never had to deal with it to that degree. It's totally different to hear it in passing or as a generalization, but when it's directed to you specifically it's a totally different ball game.

Violence doesn't make this kind of thing better, it just makes things worse & gives racist even hate; just completing the circle of hate. Even if the racist content wasn't part of it this still isn't the right way to go about it.
