Scream Awards 2008: Smashing Pumpkins, Twilight World Premiere, And How I Got Kicked Out

So if we told you a gaggle of gorgeous movie stars, rock legends, scary monsters and superfreaks were all squeezed together in one party the other night in Hollywood, you’d be like, um, what else is new, right? We get it, but this was different — for one thing, it’s going to be on TV; and for another, Gerard Way showed up to speak from inside a space pod. Yep, we snagged a pass to the Spike TV Scream Awards, which they bill as the biggest award show dedicated to the whole horror, sci-fi, fanboy (and girl) aesthetic. Sure, we went mainly to see the moonlight gleam off of Billy Corgan’s head, but the guest list did not disappoint, and neither did the action.

A totally dazzling guest list, which included the likes of Hell Boy Ron Perlman, Jared Padalecki from Supernatural, Penelope Cruz, AnnaLynne McCord of 90210, John Hensley and Jess Weixler of Teeth, The Dark Knight's Gary Oldman, graphic novel genius Frank Miller (responsible for Sin City and the 300, among others). Also in attendance was the brains behind Marvel Comics - Stan Lee himself, along with My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, the Suicide Girls, Seann William Scott (better known as Stiffler), George Lucas (who needs no introduction), Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez, and horror movie mastermind Wes Craven - to name a few. Check out the featured gallery for some slick visuals.

Other highlights:
  • TWILIGHT: An EPIC world premiere of seriously terrifying proportions from the upcoming, highly anticipated feature film based on the books by Stephenie Meyer. Did I mention it was introduced by (which means I was in the same room as) cast member Cam Gigandet? I've never read the books and I'm totally not a superfan, but I can tell you with utmost sincerity that TWILIGHT IS GOING TO RULE. Watch the show on Tuesday to see if you agree.

  • A legendary entrance by Tim Burton, who floated down from the sky in a basket held up by balloons. Very cool, though we’re not entirely sure this isn’t how he gets around anyway:

  • The Smashing Pumpkins performance was the principal reason I was stoked to cover the show. Press passes didn't include access to the event, so lucky for me a celebrity guest tossed a VIP ticket my way, and told me to "get the scoop." His awesome act of kindness enabled me to fulfill a Junior High fantasy, and see the Smashing Pumpkins. Even though they only performed their new single, "G.L.O.W." I was totally psyched to see the Smashing Pumpkins, and taking pics of their performance was SO worth getting kicked out. Check out the Smashing Pumpkins gallery here.

  • Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez blew in like a bunch of wasted teenagers. (Note for next time, boys: walk the red carpet first, THEN sample the absinthe.) I have a funny feeling that Manson puts on an act for the press because I've seen interviews he's done and he usually appears to be an intelligent man, and totally composed. I didn't expect to see him swagger down the red carpet, late, using Twiggy to keep himself from falling over. He did give us some insight into what he's currently getting into - "I'm making a record with this guy," he announced, and pointed at Twiggy. His whole attitude reeked of disrespect, and aside from the gold-trimmed Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses that adorned Marilyn's mug, both members of the Manson Family looked totally disgusting:

And the finale: About 30 seconds before the Smashing Pumpkins finished their song, security kicked me out of the entire event for taking photos inside. Considering that I wasn't supposed to be there in the first place, and I'd basically seen everything I was hoping for, it didn't phase me much. But it totally freaked them out, and 3 peoplep tried to make me delete my 500+ pics. Obviously that didn't happen, and I found my way back inside to watch Gerard Way present from inside a space pod. That ruled.

The Manson thing is disappointing because I figured at this point in his career he's past having to put on an act for the press.

And while I STILL disagree about Twilight (there's only so much you can do with source material that's THAT low quality), it's going to be filled with very pretty people. And Rpatz's take on his character should be interesting, to say the very least.

As for Tim Burton? Are we sure he DOESN'T get around that way normally? Or are those "Chariot Pulled by Winged Demon Unicorns" the truth?

i was pretty seriously bummed on manson. it was strange too cause he presented later on and totally appeared normal/coherent (and funny, kinda) but was just ridiculous upon entry.

Ugh, Manson. But Burton, you are amazing.

Who was the celebrity that gave you the VIP pass to see The Pumpkins? That was pretty sweet of him/her.

ps- Fuck Twilight.

Can I just state the obvious and say Manson = ???

I've seen his earlier stuff, and it really kind of changed that music scene. It brought back a terror and creepiness to metal music. However, I don't understand why he has to live like he does. I have respect for him when he's defending his craft; but the rest of the time, he's just a fool.

see, he really isn't. he's kind of a genius to be honest, which was why i was so bummed out by this.

Oh, I would've thought you'd gotten kicked out for dazzling somebody to death.
While that's just stupid that you got kicked out for doing your job.

Well, I think with Manson, seeing his earlier stuff is completely different from having been aware of him while he was releasing it. Like, he was around when a lot of the other major acts were pop acts and boy bands...and I'm talking N'Sync, Britney Spears stuff. He was this huge subversive voice in the middle of that crowd.

Plus? His covers are always fantastic.

You totally rule for taking in a camera anyway. Rules are generally there to be broken, right?
