Sasquatch Festival 2009 Was Epic: Girl Talk, Gogol Bordello, Animal Collective, Santigold and Kings Of LeonAll I can say is Sasquatch Festival 2009 was by far the most beautiful and entertaining way I have ever watched music. I have been to at least 15 festivals in my life and Sasquatch Festival blows them all away. The lineup this year was enough to make thousands of Canadians cross the border and thousands of Californians drive 18 hours. About 22,000 people congregated in The Gorge Amphitheatre and campgrounds in Washington (about 2 hours outside of Seattle) for a long Memorial day weekend of music, comedy, more music and camping.
Myself and over 15,000 other people spent a 3 day weekend (May 23rd-May 25th), making friends, grilling out, camping and rocking out to a killer festival lineup. The grounds of the festival make it in-and-of-itself enough reason to head to Sasquatch, but the aesthetic beauty was only a bonus to the non-stop epic live shows.
Passion Pit, thank you for being worthy of melting in the sun at 2:00 pm on Saturday May 23rd at Sasquatch Festival. Passion Pit, you have made your album Manners sound amazing. It makes a band credible and worthy of watching, when they can perform their songs as good as they sound on highly produced album. It was also great to see you guys hanging around the festival grounds, supporting the other bands perform (I spotted you on stage watching Bon Iver).
Animal Collective, your Merriweather Post Pavillion rules my world, whether I am watching you perform at a small venue like the Los Angeles Henry Fonda or the Sasquatch Festival's Gorge Amphitheatre you were meant to tour and meant to perform live music. You won over the crowd at Sasquatch with your mesmerizing loops and ambient vocals. At Sasquatch, Animal Collective was one of the few bands to use the big screens on the main stage to project images and videos, but their songs are really so hypnotic and moving that they are even enjoyable with your eyes shut in the middle of thousands of people. Panda Bear's (pictured below) voice projected beautifully through The Gorge Amphitheatre, even the hippies up on the hill were dancing around yelling "Girls".
King Khan & The Shrines knows how to throw a dance party. The keyboardist should win some sort of award for having the most energy and enthusiasm out of all keyboardists. Sure it might seem hard to take King Khan serioussly when he walks on stage in shiny underwear and a gold cape, but once the music starts its nothing but a serious and funky get down dance party.
It takes a whole-lotta-soul to put on the type of performance that King Khan & The Shrines put on at Sasquatch Festival 2009.
Bon Iver, bestill my heart with your breathtaking romantic 'Creature Feature' and 'Skinny Love'. Bon Iver, you even made me miss the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's you are so amazing. I am not only in love with your music, but your Fender guitar (pictured below) is gorgeous. Bon Iver, I spotted you on the campgrounds grabbing coffee at 7:00 am, it's awesome that you were one of the artists camping out for the weekend.
Kings Of Leon you are just so damn hot, not just because Billboard ranks your music on the top charts, or because your song 'Sex On Fire' was one of the most played songs in 2008, but because you really are the best looking group out there. I actually think your music could suck and I would still watch you. Lucky for you, your music is amazing and your live performance is even more amazing. The crowd at Sasquatch could not have asked for a better show and since it was your last show after a year long of touring, you really went out with a bang! Thanks to your 1.5 hour long set, I actually got to fall asleep early in the campgrounds that night. Well played Kings Of Leon, you were the perfect headliner for the opening night of Sasquatch.
Since it is so easy to compare her to M.I.A. I will. Sorry M.I.A., but your performance at Coachella was pitifull compared to the Santigold show on Monday May 25th at Sasquatch Festival. Booking agents, if you are looking for a main stage, main stream, dance happy performer - Santigold and her band have got your back. Even with a stomach full of Burger King, Santigold held down the main stage at Sasquatch. Santigold, thank goodness you got yourself a band. Your band helps make your performance worthy of writing about and having a band gives you the authoritive position you deserve.
Gogol Bordello, why did you not tell me years ago that I would love your music so much? Gogol Bordello, do you have any idea how much I love your song 'Start Wearing Purple'. Fearful of the meathead punk rock crowd that Gogol Bordello brings out to most festivals, I have always avoided the crowd and the show. Stupid me, because what looks like a metal meathead mosh pit, is actually more like a dance pit at a wild and drunk Ukranian wedding (so I think). I even would describe the dance pit at Sasquatch for Gogol Bordello more like a gypsy hoe-down, with a few NIN fans trying to elbow people to rile things up. Hidden behind Eugene Hütz's (lead singer) bushy mustache, is a bundle of creativity. At Sasquatch Festival 2009, Gogol Bordello played in between Santigold and Fleet Foxes, luckily for me my feet got to rest during Fleet Foxes, after Gogol Bordello had me jumping up and down for a straight hour.
(see full gallery of Gogol Bordello) Congratulations Girl Talk, because you win the award for the wildest dance party at Sasquatch Festival 2009. It might have been amazing to see all the lighters in the air at NIN, but nothing was more amazing then seeing all the crotch shots that I got from stage during the Girl Talk show on Monday May 24th.
I would say that this was probably Girl Talk's largest show and Girl Talk (1 DJ named Gregg Michael Gillis) couldn't have suceeded any better in pleasing a crowd of about 10,000 people. Girl Talk is a people pleaser and we have the photos to prove it. No joke, Girl Talk even makes Kelly Clarkson sound good. Watch out for Girl Talk, because just when I thought he was on his DJ pedastool after a sold-out tour in 2008, I witnessed from stage an entire festival field of people chanting "Girl Talk Girl Talk Girl Talk".
(see full gallery of Girl Talk) I will steal a quote from Puff Daddy to describe Girl Talk and the crowd at a Girl Talk show - "can't nobody hold me down, can't nobody stop me now, oh no, I gots to keep on moving ...". (see full gallery of Girl Talk) Chromeo, I didn't make it through your entire DJ set, because I was not on drugs and most of my energy was taken by Girl Talk and Tobacco's DJ set, but with that said, you certainly have a large catalogue of dance music to keep the dance tent going well past the hours of the festival. Chromeo wrapped up the 3 day weekend of unbelievable music at the Sasquatch Festival, with a dance tent full of sweaty campers certainly a crowd that did not want to go home.
Get your camping gear together, your backpack, your sunglasses, a comfy pair of shoes and a camera, because Sasquatch Festival 2010 is not a festival you want to miss.
