Get to Know Mew And Watch Never Seen Before Performance Of Mew In CopenhagenFor the last 15 years, the Danish trio, Mew, has been making what they call experimental dream-pop, music described as labyrinthine, artfully weird and epic. Yet, the sugary-sweet overlapping harmonies and memorable hooks turn the often challenging instrumentation into warm, accessible music. John Bjerre and Bo Madsen met at the early age of 6, but didn't become friends until 7th grade, bonding over a film project. But finding a drummer was not so easy, until Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen came along with his original sound. Of Silas, Madsen has said, "his drumming was unlike anything we had heard, and it just immediately clicked."
But the trio was lacking a vocalist, until a reluctant Bjerre stepped up to the plate. "I was really a shy kid. And I never sang before, so it was very awkward," reminisces Bjerre. Onstage shyness was soon compensated by projections of odd images of cats, sea aliens, and generally trippy interpretations of the songs. But the trippy imagery isn't limited to Mew's on stage performances. The band's website has 8 video diaries, which exhibit Mew's creativity, dedication to art, and love of avant-garde film, for fans to view. If nothing else, these short, sometimes creepy, diaries show that Mew puts its heart and soul into every venture it undertakes.
Though the title to their 5th studio album (due out August 25th), No More Stories..., may seem bleak, singer John Bjerre says, "the cover art is really happy and colorful and it shows the positive side—which is to go out, become part of the world and make your own stories." Listen to their haunting music and you'll soon find yourself addicted to Mew. Be sure to watch this video from Mew's performance "She Spider" Live in Copenhagen
