John McCain is Definately NOT The Foo Fighters' 'Hero'

The Foo Fighters are pissed at John McCain and it isn't over Kurt Cobain's stolen ashes ... The band is furious over the misuse of one of their songs in his campaign for Presidency.

That particular song, "My Hero" (off 1997's The Colour and the Shape), was described in a recent statement by Dave Grohl as being "written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential." McCain did not get the band's permission to use the song ... and the Foos are demanding he sing it at their next show in nothing but spandex (only kidding).

"To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song ... and start asking artists' permission in general!"

The band also mentioned that McCain has used music in the past without permission ... bad McCain ... very bad! "It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property," Grohl declared.

Speaking of Foo Fighters, go ahead and add "My Hero" to your MyMusic player from their song library. I'm sure they won't be pissed at you if you do!

According to MTV News, McCain and Sarah Palin had been using Heart's "Barracuda" at their political events back in September. (Apparently Palin's nickname was 'Sarah Barracuda' by her High School basketball team ... how sexual!)

"The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored," Heart's team exclaimed in a statement. On top of that, the Wilson sisters had some choice words to say about Palin "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women ... While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

It turns out that the Republican party DID get the rights to play "Barracuda" at their events and funny enough, ex-Heart guitarist Roger Fisher was happy that the song was used because it helped garner publicity and earn the band royalties (which he will be donating to Barack's campaign ... perhaps the ultimate dis to McCain and Palin).

Should Presidental nominees be entitled to use any song they want in their campaigns because of who they are, or should stricter rules be enforced to protect the rights of musicians?

Dammit, I was 8 minutes too slow. That's what I get for doing that "research" thing, huh?

I don't think it should be that big of a deal. It's just a song for their campaign gosh.

I just wish musicians would stick to music. I absolutely HATE politics and every time one of these crybaby musicians whine about the use of one of their songs by a politician makes me want to puke. I already have lost respect for Heart, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp and others for this petty crap. ALRIGHT DAVE GROHL WE GET IT!!! YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT!! Who gives a rat's ass?? I just wanted to enjoy your music and now I realize you don't want me as a fan if I'm conservative. Well, go to hell Dave!! I will not listen to your Nirvana-lite garbage again. I guess you have to be a bleeding-heart liberal to be a Foo Fighter fan. Who needs you? I hope you realize that roughly half of this country is conservative and votes Republican. Go ahead an alienate them. You can go back to being a nobody, like you were before Kurt gave you your big break. LOSER!
Well, Ken Moore, apparently THEY give a fuck. They write the music, they put out their songs, they know the message behind it. And yeah, they have the right to say that they don't want their music to be used in support of someone they find to be closed minded, bigoted and completely against their own views. This isn't "take our music off your iPod" it's "Don't twist OUR message to make it sound like yours."

Maybe you need to stop being such a cry baby because the bands you like don't want to vote for someone who voted with George W. Bush 95% of the time, doesn't support the GI Bill or a woman's right to have access to birth control, who wants to continue an unwinable war and possibly start another one and who choose a running mate who doesn't appear to have a CLUE how to govern a small town in Alaska, let alone hold the second most powerful position in the United States Government.

Also? Buzznet accounts are Free to the Public. Maybe you should consider registering if you want to share your thoughts, hm?

weird. mccain also stole music from Jackson Browne. I think it was'running on empty' as a dig as Obama and the oil crisis.

If an artist does not endorse that party they have every right to say they dont want it being wrongly used in suport of something they disagree with.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot. thend.

FUCK NO

newageamazon,

I'm saying I wish bands would leave their politics out of things. I wish politicians would stop using unauthorized music too. What my true message is about is I could give a fuck about Dave Grohl's political views. I don't want to hear his opinion on the war, welfare, AIDS, his favorite flavor of ice cream, NONE OF IT!! I'm only interested in the music. The complete arrogance of musicians and actors today who actually believe that their opinion is more important than yours or mine is bullshit!!

Thank you.

ok, Ken Moore, you're saying musicians shouldn't be allowed to be vocal about their opinions, political in this case. Don't pay attention if you don't care. They don't have to cater to your wishes. If you don't like them expressing themselves, then don't support them. I'm sure they don't feel the pain of one less CD bought, sorry to rain on your consumer-power parade.

So what? Everyone and their mom expresses their views on politics, but just because your famous you're not allowed to? That's bullshit. It's not like I want to see everyone's opinions expressed through bumper stickers on their car, but it's just something you deal with, because it's FAIR. And I know fairness hasn't been seen for about 8 years now, but hopefully we will see it again one day soon.

Sounds like McCain should be sued by at least 3 parties for copyright infringement. You know, under the same copyright laws that he helped sign into power.
The Absent-Minded Professor.: 02/25/2009 4:36 PM
I really wish that he would just ask permission. And really, Mr. McCain...only country musicians will give you the permission. Usually.
